15hrs of watching KR

Anyways, i always head back home this time of year to spend a few weeks with the folks as i am done with class for a month.

So i loaded the speed up and head out on the 1300 trip around 8am today. I couldn't help but to have my ap plugged in to check everything out along the trip.

I dont know if it is my piece of shit car or not. But when i have cruise control engaged in any gear at around 3grand or more, so around 80mph or so. When ever the highway would go down a slope and the cruise control would "turn off" to keep car from going over set speed.

My KR would hit 6.9 and slowly work back down to zero until the road got flat again. i watched this and logged this for well over 1000miles and countless downgrades, so it wasn't a fluke.

If i were to press the off button on the cruise control to take the throttle off, the kr would stop immediately.

I had one case were the slope was so great it help 6.9 for over 2 miles, the car ran fine the whole time and mpgs were normal.

So what im asking is that normal? does anyone's elses do this??? i have 40k of driving like a granny so its not from abuse!

ill post some logs later i need some sleep..

aaronc7 12-11-2009 10:26 PM

normal.

spnkr21 12-11-2009 10:31 PM

That's what you get for driving like a granny. Get some fuel in there!

esr010 12-11-2009 10:34 PM

Yeah somewhat normal. Phantom knock as some would call it.

speed3kidnj 12-11-2009 11:05 PM

i have that too same exact thing except i was going to atlantic city, nothing ever happend i looked behind me i get saw no smoke or anything. it made me very very nervous tho. guys should i worry about this? im going to talk to tmy tuner and see what he says. i get chills everytime i see that number go from 0.0.

bykeryder4life 12-12-2009 01:29 AM

normal. do reading on the subject. your car is adjusting timing to optimize your cars power/emissions/mpg's as it cruises. unless its wot kr above 2.0 dont worry

madvillain 12-12-2009 01:43 AM

I get the same thing man, but id be paranoid as hell about 6.9. the most i get is 1.7, and that happens once out of like 200 times. if i use cruise control its basically 0.7 constantly

kilik2 12-12-2009 06:54 AM

yeah mine doesnt get anywhere near that high and it isnt knocking like clockwork either. I used to be able to induce it in 2nd to 3rd shifts but not anymore. I second the push the pedal every once in a while notion, seems to help the car a bit.

BudUMfan 12-12-2009 07:04 AM

Same here. Tripped out for days untill the boys here said it was normal. Happening more now its cold out it seems.

DaleNixon 12-12-2009 07:19 AM

6.9 for two minutes? What did your ignition timing look like next to that KR number?

2007speed3 12-12-2009 07:24 AM

HAHA ^^ Let me get the logs onto my other computer.

For the two minutes it would go from 6.9 to 6.3 to 5.8 and back to 6.9, and start that cycle all over again.

O BTW my fuel pump is shot, im waiting for PTP to take there time and ship it to me. I get 900psi spurts at wot and stutter like a retard if i press the gas to fast.

Here is one log.

bioevolve 12-12-2009 09:15 AM

I get the same shit, cruising just random kr upto 5.9 and some when I let off or between shifts.

18psiWhiteMS3 12-12-2009 09:17 AM

man WTF is wrong with my car. i dont ever get any knock, not even in cruise control

aaronc7 12-12-2009 09:21 AM

you dont have enough miles on it, just wait

18psiWhiteMS3 12-12-2009 09:23 AM

how many miles before u guys say it starts happening

aaronc7 12-12-2009 09:24 AM

24,482.78

evo2ms3 12-12-2009 09:35 AM

Since it got cold, I've gotton up to 7.1KR at light throttle before my car warms up fully. I always let off the throttle when I see it though, and wouldn't use cruise control if it ever held that.

2007speed3 12-12-2009 10:13 AM

My car rolled over 40k miles on this trip, my introduction to kr started around 25k..

yea i hope my car was warmed up after the 15 hr trip.

Its weird no change in engine sound or smoke very weird. But if i tiped the throttle a tad bit in 5th to pass someone going 50mph my car would stutter and .7 or .3 would show up.

But going down a hill with cruise control on it would bang 6.9 time after time not a change in the way the car acts. I tried once to floor it with the 6.9 kr the car would accelerate normally in 6th no problem and the kr would be unaffected just slowly working its way back to 0 even tho i had the pedal to the metal doing 100mph plus.

My car is very wacky.

Aaron you get this shitty kr? I know you have about 50 60thousand now right?????

madvillain 12-12-2009 02:45 PM

haha my knock goes away in the winter! i get the woooorst knock during the summer. 160-170 BAT's are no good.

aaronc7 12-12-2009 02:56 PM

almost 60k, i pretty much never get this. i noticed it went down when i got meth, and now its almost completely gone after i removed the EGR

2007speed3 12-12-2009 03:05 PM

could my spark plugs cause this? Is my motor so loose that it cant help but kr.

OR,... im just blessed to own a MazdaSpeed and didn't realize i signed the FAIL agreement on the bottom of the contract.

<--- will be my next whip, fuck camrys, Tractor are where its at

CoolMs3 12-12-2009 04:41 PM

I'm very impressed with 1300 miles in 15 hrs.

jahman 12-12-2009 05:31 PM

You made one big mistake...you monitored knock retard. Just ignore it.

And two more things:
1. The sky is falling.
2. Your engine is gonna blow. /sarcasm

Agreed, this is an average of 87mph. Including stops, lol.

06Speed6 12-12-2009 07:40 PM

Coasting KR is fine and normal at almost any level.

I have about 84k miles and almost no knock, it has nothing to do with miles.

2007speed3 12-13-2009 06:09 AM

1220 from fl to long island ny.

no traffic just in the bronx.

3 stops for gas. no less than 78mph. its do able

Just more proof that our KR on the DH is usually nothing to worry about, just the car adjusting for best MPG.

flyrevs2 12-13-2009 07:32 AM

never see any KR since I installed the PTP restrictor pill - you might want to give this a try, it's pretty inexpensive

Im guessing your talking about the PCV fix? I was one of the first ones to give that sucker a try.

It did not do anything. I still have it in, but it did zip for me.

yea, PVC fix. wow funny how it works on some engine and not others.

Well I have the MS CAI, tip and forge BPV so maybe that has something to do with it as well

check your pvc valve maybe something's up with that

Just because you're seeing KR, doesn't mean the knock sensor is sensing real knock, especially during open-loop cruise. If you're seeing it at WOT, I would be concerned. I get an occasional <1.0 during WOT, but it is random. That's what the knock sensor is there for. It's there because it's going to get used by the ECU and pull timing here and there. Lots of cars have knock sensors. My wife's MDX has a knock sensor and probably pulls timing all the time because we run 89 octane in it when the manual recommends 91+ for best performance. It's an SUV and we don't give a shit, so we run the minimum. It's been going for 55,000 miles without a hitch. If I hooked up a DH to it, I'd probably shit my pants and be paranoid (or maybe not because it's an SUV and I don't give a shit). ;)

2007speed3 12-13-2009 10:18 AM

lol o yea, i got 8.1kr last night.

can anyone beat that number??

what kind of fuel are you running ? octane ?

try dumping in some fuel system cleaner maybe you've got some moisture in the system

2007speed3 12-13-2009 11:55 AM

i run nothing but 93, always a different station.

what kinda octane booster? Is that safe to use?

I've had 9.7

flyrevs2 12-13-2009 12:22 PM

didn't mean adding octane booster just wanted to know what you are running in your car - 93 is fine no need to add booster unless you are racing

smakdown61 12-14-2009 05:06 AM

If you see a kr number above 6.0, it is most definitely NOT knock retard and I have evidence of that. If you pull up the mazda training doc for this motor it says the maximum knock retard is only 6 degrees.

DaleNixon 12-14-2009 10:53 AM

Indeed. I got 8.6 once.

Does the DISI motor kill fuel delivery during no throttle engine braking like most motors do?
