30K Mile Service

I just hit 31K miles in my '08 ms3. I have doing oil changes myself and checked the coolant @ 20k added a smidge. I clean my SRI every oil change. What does the dealer do at the 30K mile mark to keep the car running tip top? I assume they would just void my warranty and say thanks for the $$ and since i have not gone to the dealer yet for anything I think I will continue to do my own work. The car seems to be running well and I want to keep it that way.

My question is what should I be doing @ 30k miles? Replace/check/fill etc. spark plugs? Brake fluid? Coolant flush? Transmission?

Thanks!

thats straight from mymazda.com which is the official mazdausa website

I myself do all my oil changes and service. i am about to do the tranny fluid change. you are not required to take it to them to keep your warranty. i keep ALL my recipts in a folder with the mile, date, and spec of the service done. the one time i had to drop it off for repair i stocked out and gave them my service book i made. they didnt say one word, they just did the warranty work lol

I know my Genpu manual has a table with all this stuff in it...

change brake fluid? really? it doesn't get dirty unless you have a problem. it is a totally sealed system. anything to make a buck i guess. just change your oil. its all i did at 30,000 LOL

Fuel Lines, Brake lines, disc brakes, steering, suspension, Tighten bolts and nuts on chassis and body...? Tighten them ALL? Wow they really go the extra mile for ya!:trink26:

I bet they just take your money and call it good. If everything is working properly I wonder what if anything extra I should do. Fuel is going to the engine, brakes are stopping me and steering wheel turns the car... oh and the chassis seems to be holding together. My car must be one of the better ones from the factory.

Is there not a recommendation for Transmission drain and fill interval? Or did I just not see it?

On a side note, I hardly believe they do all that stuff they list. Or is that why it takes them 8hrs to do an oil change? Interesting.

yeah seriously. in theory it should never have to be replaced because as the pads wear, the fluid fills the gap and when you put new pads on, the fluid level will go back up. thats why its called a reservoir. I always make it a point to tell them not to "top it off" with all the other fluids. that way when i go to change my brake pads, it doesn't overflow all over the engine bay. they probably just charge for the change and actually never do anything. i remember seeing an investigative journalist by the name of Joel Grover (a name i'll never forget because it was so funny) going around and having service done at different places and proving that they didn't actually do any of the work. they are some very entertaining youtube videos.

OP, dont take it to the dealership to get this work done, unless money is of no significance to you. I recall my dealer telling me it was like $600 or something like that for the 30k mile service.

i work for honda so i typically maintain my car to a honda schedule or sooner. brake fluid should be changed every 45k or 3 years. your brake fluid resi is not completely sealed, it has a vent in the lid, with that being said and knowing that brake fluid is hygroscopic your brake fluid is retaining moisture and contaminants. another thing that breaks brake fluid down is heat mainly the heat generated and transfered to the fluid through the caliper.

this is why they state a recommend replacement interval

ill be the first to admit we spend more time looking over some cars in hopes to upsell more work. most of us are not straight hourly. we get paid for the job

another thing is alot of manufactures have yet to update their service schedules to be more in line with the life of the product.

ex : honda recommends replacing your coolant (standard drain and fill the rad) every 30k, but the bottle of coolant says. "lifetime coolant"

Bump for upcoming 30k mile milestone.

I've been doing all the maintenance myself up to this point. Has anyone actually had parts of their fuel system or brake system replaced by the dealer at 30k miles? I'm probably going to order the cabin air filter and do it myself, unless someone has determined the Genpu cabin air filter is a PITA to replace. That, and I have a spray can of lithium grease I could just lube up whatever locks and hinges with.

Pedal-Force 10-07-2012 10:03 AM

Since this got bumped I'll bump it again.

Has anyone actually tightened all the bolts on the chassis? How many are there? Were any actually loose? I'm coming up on 30k. Gonna replace the cabin filter and I graphite powdered the one lock I have yesterday. I'll grease the hinges today.

The everything on the chassis thing seems a bit ridiculous, and sounds like it will be a PITA without a lift.

f-castrillo 10-07-2012 10:28 AM

I've only ever done a 30k mile service on my 2004 Mazda3, and now at 120k miles, I can say that I have not noticed a difference with chassis bolts loosening up at all. I don't intend on doing a dealer 30k service on the MS3, just a good old oil change and whatever else it has coming (valve cleaning maybe)
