3rd Gear is pretty much gone...HELP
 

Missed shifted the other weekend into 3rd it grinided and now it doesn't want to go in. I have to play with it to even make to engage. Its been at my dealer last 9 days!!!!!! Still waiting for "Mazda" to either say yea or no that they going to cover it.

ANYONE in "SO-CAL" that can maybe help me? Maybe someone with tranny knowledge? Am willing to pay you (duhhh) and make a day out of it or something. Am just thinking worst case scenario...cheapest Ive found is $900 labor + parts.

If anyone has any ideas please help me out. Am guessing the synchros are bad in 3rd or i chipped a tooth or iono? Dealer tech says "its a gear"??? He hasn't dropped the tranny yet becausehe needs approval from my warranty BTW car is at 49xxx miles. You know how dealers can be... Am not to big on tranny stuff

Same thing happened to me at 44000 miles and i took my car to john hine mazda in san diego. They basically told me they would cover it but had to order parts and would not pay for a rental car. I told them if they were not going to give me a rental then i was just going to keep driving the car until they got the parts in. They ordered syncros for 3rd gear and 4th gear and the gears themselves. By the time i got the car back into them about a 1000 miles later because i drive a lot, the damage was done for sure. they ended up replacing all syncros, and all gears except for reverse and 6th. everything was covered under warranty except for the cost of parts for the new clutch i had them put in while it was apart. I hope you stocked out before you took it in.

they rebuilt my trans same as guy above at 17000 miles don't even think of speed shifting this trans it wont last long. and the trans new is like $6000

Well i was not speed shifting or anything at the time. i was just casually driving and went to put it in third and it didnt really want to go in. over the next day it got to a point where it would not go in at all anymore. I can say it could be from previous speed shifting but when it actually broke i was just cruising.

its accumulated damage till the tiny sincros cant hold any more, and if you ever had a hard time putting in that gear the shift forks bend perty easy, mine was bent and i wouldn't think i was that hard on it but it happened...... good luck man!

well i guess im in the same boat as you. I can get into 3rd but if the eng revs up fast when i shift it grinds horribly when it goes in.

Do you guys have ssp's or sts's? I can hardly duplicate this for the dealer with the stock shifter cuz of how long it takes to shift. But with the ssp it will do it everytime.

there is a guy on here that is selling his tranny ima find it for you. get a rmm it helps to keep the motor from bucking and 3rd is notorious for grinding without a rmm.

ive got the trz and it isnt helping at all. Only thing its done is give me some weird random vibs and a lil less wheel hop.

the dogbone? i have a streetunit v1 and that shit is solid. time to trade up. don't get me wrong i wish i didnt have all the vibrations from a stiff mount like that but its worth it. it really does help with the 3rd gear issue though alot.

yea ive got the dogbone. dont get me wrong the engine is solid now, but i think im beyond help on 3rd. The only reason its not at the dealer is cuz i cant duplicate it all the time with the slow stock shifter.
