40k miles and some worrying noises

Hi there.

I've just bought a 07' mazdaspeed 3 and I have detected two weird behaviors.

1. Whenever I start the engine it makes a very short noise or rattle (about half a second). It seems the valves knocking till the oil reaches.

As I have read before, it seems to be some common issue in this engine but I haven't figured out yet how to fix it....

2. I have 40k miles or 60k km in my MS3. When I press the clutch the engine noise becomes much more silent.

The gearbox runs OK for me but there is that sound which scares me since it seems a clutch flywheel issue.

You are going to need this when you ask these kinds of questions.

I suggest searching VVT actuator failures and Clutch noise or anything remotely like it.

About the VVT there's a lot of info, the other one... I have no idea why it sounds like that.

the noise of the clutch. It seems to go away when the clutch peddle is pushed in.

Another different point related to the VVT failure... People speak about chain issues, do they have something to do with the VVT?

From what I can tell in the video, it is nothing to worry about.

We have two speeds, both sound like that with the clutch out, and have since they were new.

The clutch noise is the throw out bearing. Speeds have noisy throw outs Completly normal.

As said above the other sound is your VVT. A 7 year old car I highly doubt is covered under warranty, But again read and do your own research. It took me 30 seconds to find a thread talking about the VVT TSB.

I've read them, but actually there are plenty of threads about it. Some of them talk about some chain issue too.

As I have read, and knowing that I'm not doing that myself, it is going to be a 5h repair job plus the parts. But there are also people concerning about the chain and explaining how to replace it.

My English sucks, and I really don't know if there is also something to check about the chain... which seems important to me.

VVT actuator and the timing chain are done at the same time. Its not a cheap fix, parts arent too bad if you can figure out how to do it (there is a how to on here) Better to replace it before it goes rather than let it go and then you needing a whole new motor.

You mean, VVT has nothing to do with timing chain lifespan but they are both connected so it worths replacing timing chain kit at the same time.

Am I right?

Taken Directly from Edgeautosports post that i just linked.

What is happening here is the actuator can't hold oil pressure and therefore it can't take up the slack in the chain and allows it to hit the timing cover. This is the first sign that your VVT Actuator is going out and you will need to replace it quickly. If the car slips timing, pistons will meet valves and you will be left looking for a new motor.

Clutch out noise at idle that goes away when you depress the clutch pedal is the normal but very noisy clutch throw out bearing. To keep our cars light, there is virtually no soundproofing or sound absorbing material.

VVT noise, timing chain clanging against inside of valve cover needs fixing or your motor will b destroyed.

They ask for 5h labour, affordable, but they ask me for almost 1000 $ or 800€ only for the VVT part.....

They are not crazy. There is a lot involved when replacing VVT.

Get it done and continue modding your car.

The VVT part on its own shouldn't cost much more than $120 or so. I bought all the parts needed for the VVT swap for ~$320 if that helps you. Most of the cost tends to be for labor -- understandably. I've heard of dealerships charging anywhere from ~$700 to ~$1400.

If they're trying to gouge you on parts you could always buy them elsewhere and just pay them for labor.

About 500$ of labour, 5h, OK, and 1500 US dollars for the parts. The VVT parts, about 1100 US dollars, the other amount for the very chain...

So they are asking only for the tensioner and its involved parts (not the chain) about 1100 $

I'm located in Spain, the are asking to me exactly 1900€ which I don't know how much US dollars are at this time.

From that 1900€ only 350€ are from labour, it seems to me a bit awful....

I just called my local dealer and they quoted me $1050 plus tax or $1350 plus tax depending worse case scenario. It does take a full day for them to do it.

350 euro converts to 393 USD at the moment, that seems like a pretty good price for the amount of work to be done in labor; your parts cost is horrible when compared to US pricing, but likely not out of line as Mazda parts are not cheap in the EU.... you might be better off sourcing/importing the parts yourself. Frothy posted what the parts would cost you in the US, parts would be about 285 euro before tariffs and shipping...

Most places I've been too won't warranty the parts if they didn't provide them. Hence, the mark up in price. So, if the work they did caused an issue, you better believe they'll blame the parts you supplied instead. If you're taking it too a shop, best bet is to IMO is just to let them supply the parts.

That kit has every part I need for fixing it?

I mean, what Mazda says is needed for the repair is included? Because the guy is going to fix my MZR is going to check at Mazda that those are all the parts he needs for 100% fix.

Are those parts OEM with original Mazda part codes?

It has everything you need and all the parts are OEM (also includes some parts I didn't list above, like the chain guides, which I didn't feel the need to replace).

Edgeautosport is a vendor here on MSF and well respected. The quality of the parts shouldn't concern you -- they're legit.

The only thing I see "missing" from the kit is RTV sealant to put the timing cover back on. You're not doing the work yourself, so this shouldn't concern you.

Who is the "guy" that's repairing your car? Is he familiar with Mazdaspeeds?

There are special timing tools needed to perform this procedure. If a Mazda dealership isn't doing the work, your mechanic will need these tools.

That guy isn't familiar to Mazdaspeed as far as I now but very well prepared for this kind of repairs as far as I now too.

He's used to prepare VAG, BMW, Mitsubishi and Lancia engines, I know they have nothing to do, but he is truly trustful.

He already has that link but he probably doesn't have specific Mazda tools. What are specifically that special tools?

Make sure he knows what he's doing and reads that link.

Lots of mechanics have fucked up this repair in the past. Fucking up this repair can mean needing a new engine.
