5.9 kr while cruising highway

would this mean i have something loose in the engine compartment if i get up to 5.9 kr while cruising at around 70 mph?

EdgeAutosport.com 10-09-2012 08:33 AM

Part throttle knock is nothing to worry about. :masked:

Are you completely stock, as in stock tune and everyting.

The stock tune seems to knock alot at cruse, the theory is it does then because it is constantly looking for the best MPG possible. if you are monitoring with an AP then if you go to a OTS tune that will mostly go away. I dont know if i have seen anything with a stock gen 1 going ZZB while crusing

mig02 10-09-2012 09:15 AM

i have a stage 1 k & n intake and tip on 91 octane with the new v231 ots maps. i wonder if it was doing this too with the older maps... ill post some logs.. and i know i have to do a maf cal since my ltft are -11 while driving and -19 a idle

ccspeed3 10-09-2012 09:19 AM

Yah post some logs that will help, I've seen upwards of 7 kr while cruising.

daafisch 10-09-2012 09:33 AM

Is it happening around 3k rpm? I seem to get the most knock when cruising around that RPM.

Same here around 3k cruising about 75mph.

Uberfly 10-09-2012 09:40 AM

i usually see 6-7 while just cruising when it's cold. once my car has been running for about 10-15 minutes i don't see any knock (besides the usual .7 etc.)

Ayaritz 10-09-2012 09:42 AM

@mig02
Bro, -11/-19 ltft... Do a maf cal!
Also check your timing chain for slop and/ or pull your valve cover off and look for chain marks.

Deldran 10-09-2012 09:43 AM

I don't see hardly any pt kr on my tune but its a custom tune based off a stage 1 91 map

yah thats it. the first time i was cruising at 3000rpm when i got a knock of 5.2 and the second time i was at 3000rpm, accelerated part throttle to 3500rpm and right after i let go the gas i got a knock of 5.9... thats kind of weird

i know im doing a maf cal soon, im just waiting to drive a good 100 miles of this tune...

easy 10-09-2012 03:08 PM

u need a maf cal. i also noticed that kr can sometimes occur when there is a large difference in fuel trims during break points.

a loose tip or slight leaks will also cause kr while crusing ...

mig02 10-09-2012 03:13 PM

i did solve the problem for now. i had huge kr while slowly accelerating in 1st and 2nd gear from 2000 to 5000 rpm so i switched back to the v210 maps and all the kr went away .... kind of strange my car dosent like the new maps i guess

burn813 10-09-2012 03:22 PM

Maf cal is not going to help random kr.... It is normal and if you are afraid of pt throttle kr.... DO NOT BUILD YOUR MOTOR lulz.... Of course this another noob thread that could have been averted by simply searching @Raider

easy 10-09-2012 06:14 PM

the kr from a built motor is from the piston slap when they have not got up to temp and expanded ...when their up to temp it shouldn't be as noisy were it causes extra kr. I do get kr when the motor is cold though and it pulls timing and makes the car feel so sluggish, so i just set the knock sensors to be active after 170* coolant temp when cruising around before it gets up to temp.

Read links in my sig.

It's the VTEK modulator control chip being misaligned. Everyone knows that.

One of our locals is having an unusual abundance of higher kr on his new v231 map as well.
I attributed it to the recent fall in temperatures. @rfinkle2, what say to lowering the absolute global max ignition advance from 60 to something a little more realistic, like 40?

mig02 10-09-2012 09:26 PM

same here, im in ontario and last night was around 6 degrees outside, the weird thing is i switched back to v210 maps and all the unasual kr went away.

burn813 10-09-2012 10:44 PM

You ain't shit unless you get 8.1 kr or higher! Wut?

theurgy 10-09-2012 11:53 PM

This is very interesting as well.
I might try switching to a v210 map to try this out.

Does anyone have a Stage 1 SF+TIH+IC 91 Octane OTS map?
v210?

dead-zone 10-10-2012 01:02 AM

I think it has something to do with timing. I am running at 1.75 loads 4.67 degrees .... at 2.0 loads 3.00 degrees, at 3000rpms. The other days, for some reason I changed the timing in that same regions to about 1 degree. On the highway, cruising on 5th gear at 3000rpms I saw knocks about 5.9, 6 ... I went back to the values that I have set previously and these knocks were gone again. So what is your advance timing in that area?

mig02 10-10-2012 09:24 AM

i have a Stage 1 SF+TIH 91 Octane OTS map v210 without the ic if you want...

theurgy 10-10-2012 09:34 AM

Yeah I got that one. I have an IC now though...
I'mm give it a shot with the one without and drive around for a bit with it before I get the MAF Cal done.

I am always a little antsy when new versions of ATR come out.

I would say setting max global ignition to something in the area of 40 makes sense.
