5th gear gayness!

So on a lovely 9.5 hour drive from Ohio to Virginia Sunday evening I start hearing a high pitched whine while in 6th gear around 70-80 mph. It was intermittent at first and then constant. I exit to get gas and downshift to 5th around 50 mph and as I release the clutch it grinds and pops out of gear. I was like wtf so I put it back into 5th and it did it again, so I rev matched into 5th and it held for about 10 secs and then grinds and popped out. So I thought maybe some phantom bullshit as always with these cars, shut the car off, fill up blah blah. On the on-ramp back on to the highway same shit happens from 4th to 5th, so I say fuck it take 4th to 55-60mph and shift to 6th. I get home finally not using 5th, drive it to work yesterday morning and it's still grinding. I'm thinking synchros but any other ideas? I just switched to motorcraft xt-m5-qs about 2 weeks ago.

In regards to the grinding, it sounds like the shift fork pads broke down, the synchro wasn't engaging completely, and now the synchro is bad. I have the same issue with 2nd gear in my car.

Time for a transmission rebuild. I'd recommend new shift forks with brass pads from i-Moto racing as well.

I'm not sure about the whine in 6th. Check fluid level and make sure it's not low.

@silvapain; Figured I was gonna have to tear the trans apart. Pretty sure fluid level is good, filled it with unicorn jizz 2 weeks ago and it was still full when I checked before I drove to Ohio a week ago. Thanks meng!
