Whatever man... If my turbo starts smoking it just gives me a reason to go BT. I'm not going to waste my time with the stocker again

solid philosophy.. except for the stock block being allergic to bigger turbos, and by allergic i mean it sneezes rods. lol.

well, considering the stock turbo does, i'm guessing a k03 could manage. lol.

IMHO you can upgrade the turbo if you go thru the proper steps - fueling, tuning, w/m, etc.

and, additionally, i think it's more the combination of turbo+ECU+fueling that = blown engines. and there aren't too many blown engines. the point i was trying to make is that, if the stocker goes bad, take the necessary precautions before throwing a big turbo in. there are guys on here with stock block that made plenty of power - laloosh, whoosh, etc.

and there's also the argument that the 2.3 DISI turbo just sucks and blows b/c, well, it sucks...

not sure how big i want to go but I have easy access to stock cummins turbos but if it turns out to be too much of a pain I'm eyeing the 3071r... and whatever i do its going to be low boost, untill a true way to get fuel into the motor comes about...

Diesel truck turbos are built for big diesel trucks, I'm not sure there's much of a correlation to the flyweight little turbos in our cars.

But I do agree that you should -drive- the temps down by staying off the boost and go easy on the motor before you shut it off. If you're doing a track day, the rule of thumb is that when you pull off the track you just crank the heater and open the hood while it idles for a few minutes, but there's a reason for cool down laps, so use them wisely. As soon as I see the flag I slow way down and blast the heater.

Not very practical for a street driven car though. Basically, if you've been out in your local area jamming the car around then hot foot it right up to your driveway, yes indeed, let it idle for a while. Personally, I try to plan this in advance and just drive the car gently for the last few minutes while the car is still moving, which improves cooling efficiency anyway. Then I might sit for a 15-30 seconds and finish listening to a song, checking my texts, picking up any trash, or even wipe down the interior. But that's only if I've been "bad" and drove it hard all the way to my house.

Moving air and driving gently is a lot more effective than just idling a hot motor while stopped anyway, so that's what I tend to favor, and the laws of physics are on my side. Even though the engine produces more heat off-idle, the water and oil pumps are moving more fluid, and you have the advantage of air moving through the whole engine bay, which cools everything down, not just the turbo.

It also helps that since I live in a busy urban area that the car is idling much of the time anyway while waiting for stop lights and traffic. I use that time to help cool it down too. Almost every time before I park it, the car has been running at low volume long before I shut it off.

My friend fabbed up a turbo from a 2000 cummins onto a datsun 280.... Ran like a champ too!

Holsets off the Dodge Cummins set ups are pretty damned popular with the boosted 4 banger kids these days.....results are quite good. The turbo's can be had way cheap, they're very reliable and the results are speaking for themselves. Do a "holset" search on Hondatech if you want to see more.....
