Hey dude where do you live? If your broke you can do curb addresses I used to do 1000-1500 cash a week doin that. Thats what screwed me up in looking for a job after college cuase I was making plenty of money doing curbs and had to pay bills in the mean time so I never looked for a job..lol Plus my original plan was to attend law school..

Myself I reealy enjoyed the curbs its not easy but you are your own boss and it gives you a great feeling of independence. You go out on your own work for 4-5hours make $200 cash. Its a great independt feeling when you realize you could do this any time you want and you don't have to depend on anyone. There are millions of curb adresses and they need to be repainted every 6 months or so.. Your biggest enemy with the curbs is yourself..its MUCH easier to cruise around drink coffee, hang out at kroger and read car mags instead of walking around asking people if you can piant there address for $20.. especially when its 110 degrees out..lol I aveged about $35 an hour getting and painting deals myslef, when I paid my buddy $15 an hour to paint my deals and I just walk around and get the deals I averaged $75-100+ an hour... One time I just walked all day on a saterday 6 and half hours getting deals and got 47 deals and let my buddy paint them. Do the math on that one

I believe I understand why nobody as posted about this yet...it's a huge job to undertake for this mod. Not something recommeded to do in the front yard on jacks. lol; the MS6 is going to be 6 hours on a lift minimum.

i could bang out the install in a day on jackstands in the driveway
the problems are 3 fold for me
1) its cold as shit outside and snow in the driveway
2) I dont get the hours I used to get at work, so no extra coin, i got bills to pay (GSR F painting curbs, no offense, but if I got that broke id sell my computer, internet connection and my shoes before painting curbs, besides, my entire neighborhood doesnt have curbs, sidewalks or any of that city crap)
3) I race stock class in SCCA and autox will be firing up again in 3 months, so seems dumb to put it in now, just to take it out a few months later

live and learn... however its a gorgeous paperweight!

Why is it such a difficult undertaking? Taking out the tranny? Can it be easily removed without pulling the motor? Special tools needed?

I have never seen anyone paint curbs by me. What do you mean they have to be done every six months? Do you mean the little yellow 1 foot patch with the house number on it or the whole curb?

Is that curb painting a left coast thing? I've never seen house numbers painted on the curb.

I have the flywheel here under my desk. But well..... it's kinda hard to get motivated to do the install when I have a bent rod.... and I'm still waiting on a vendor to push ahead to get the special rods made so I can get my car back on the road..... Just imagine though... BS delete and lightweight flywheel! Mega fast revs!

it shouldn't be more than 4 hours on a speed6 honestly and on a 3 on jack stands I managed 4 hours by myself. on a lift 2.5 hours. the only tool you need special is the alignment tool. I conveniently have one in my tool box in my garage and I'm sure ken has one also.

do it 4 times in like 2 months you learn tricks I could do an Acura TL trans in 2 hours it paid me 8. you learn tricks and short cuts like shit you don't actually need to remove and what not. the best was dead lifting a 3trans into place that was a bad idea.

4 Hours on a speed6 tranny....... Do you sand the flywheel down? You will NEVER do this with just ratchets!!! So this must be an all air gun job. This sir i will challenge you to see if you can do. I guarantee you will NEVER do a clutch install in less than 5 in and out even with air tools!!!!

The best i have done is 6 hours!! Also what is there to omit? you have the shift cables and all the wiring for all the sensors, then you have the side motor mount and intake and battery. Also you have to take the suspension apart and the axle out. Also taking the bolts out behind or just below the turbo are not fun to get to.

I did my 1990 probe gt on the ground and with no air tools in about 1.5 hours!!! That was my fastest.

I don't have a alloy flywheel, But have installed a custom solid flywheel with twin plate set up on a MS6. That was all good until I snapped a LHD rear drive shaft. For the second time.

It's a big boy job for sure..and the big dogs (Charles, Redrocketz) would agree under the best of circumstances it's a handful of work best left to the professionals or the super patient and methodical.

But a SEMI style install challenge would be an interesting event on a Dyno Day...hum..

ok i will indulge myself in this. By the way how fast have you pulled a manifold off before? My record so far is 45 minutes and i spent 5-7 minutes looking for a light!!! But if you want to do the challenge then we can do it at P3 when we get another lift. Maybe we will have prize for the winner? Also i pulled a exhaust manifold and turbo and had it on the floor in about 1 hour and 10 minutes

factory or aftermarket manifold? I've done the whole thing from factory to aftermarket in about the same time give or take. The prototype took me roughly seven hours to have running on the car with drilling out a broken stud in the turbo. I can take an aftermarket off in like 10 minutes.

I've torn apart way too many mazdas at this point I don't want to think about it. but I have moved on from that now so it would have to be worth my while to take time to drive back to Maryland. give me a job then we can talk but seriously the only problem with it is you can have that one that goes perfect for you then the one were it all goes wrong. like some jackass pushing in the clutch when the slave is disconnected from the trans and blowing out the piston, or some other random shit.

^^^^ That's a good one..blown slave cylinder from some tool stepping on the clutch with the engine out or disconnected...Fluid everywhere. As for the SEMI style build competition...I'm betting money on my dog Charles...because around here on the clutch/flywheeel installs...we have a acronym for him. GTFOOTW so nobody get's hurt.

Let me know what it would take to set this up. :phillyb:

you know what I'm referring to there do ya. you would need 2 cars and all the shit in which to do it since I'm in illinois I wouldnt be bringing tools out there. Around here I'm called the guy they call when they can't figure it out. when I tell guys at the dealer how to do it better... yeah what would the winner get?

i have been working on Mazda's since 1990. i Have worked on every Mazda out except the rotary but i do know a little about that as well. I currently have a 2.2l turbo 626 modified and can take that apart with my eyes closed. This is not a match of "I'M BETTER THAN HE IS" i just like that challenge!!! Friendly challenge.

As for the prize that is TBD if this really gets off the ground.

oh yeah I would only do it for the fun of it of course. It would be fun. while we're at it want to help me do a manual swap on my truck? I plan on it this summer. You should really dive into the Rotary world it is amazing what you can do with 1.3L of engine. I've built a gt45 Cosmo powered RX-7 with the best of the best parts in the engine it hits 13k rpm in no time roasting the tires and dog walking at 85 mph it is intense! and my old all motor 12a auto cross beast I never shifted out of first!
