In my opinion there is a mutual ground of fault. I am not placing blame or assuming anything here so keep that in mind before you read this.

JJ....you if you did not send that that part of the motor then it is partially your responsibility to check something like that before you reinstall it. Too often i read things on here where people have tried to do things themselves and mess it up because, they rush or just have a lack of knowledge. Which the cam follower seems to be your case as well.

Did you take off the fuel pump and assembly yourself or was it half and half....yours and DCR? Kind sketch on the details or i missed something in my reading.

Now as far as DCR is concerned, it has been said that they are new to the DISI mazda engine, which again as it has been mistakes can and will happen. I can assure you they wont make this mistake again. However, if it was sent to them with the cam follower inside the housing they should have made sure to either reinstall it or send it back in a bag or box with a note to reinstall it before the FP was reinstalled.

I think its mutual oversight between both of you and one cant really blame the other solely.

I do wish you the best of luck with i and if you still are collecting money i would be happy to send you 20 bucks or so to help you out cause i understand how hard it can be to be without a car.

Well, however the blame gets distributed in the end, DCR has done what they could, Phil got lucky, and most importantly, Phil and DCR learned something. I'm sure the sheets are already printed for inclusion in the next crated up motor from DCR -

DON'T FORGET THE FUCKING CAM FOLLOWER

its always the safer approach to let a reputable shop go from alpha to omega on a build but sometimes in trying to save costs we enthusiasts take on tasks that are beyond our means..... i have zero doubt phil is more than competent to do installs BUT..... lack of experience in dumping motors into engine bays unfortunately teach us all hard lessons.

i dont care who you are ....first time u use a cherry picker to dunk a motor back in the bay shit goes wrong.... u learn and move on and this will be the case here

now a comprehensive "how to" would be awesome..... but i am sure unlikely

Honestly ide ask darrell if I could pull and clean the pan, valve cover, and CDFP area, replace the oil pump, run about 3 or 4 gal of cheap oil through the block and head to flush it out and reassemble the engine with a new filter, run it a few minutes and drain the oil again and refill with a new filter.

The bearings are protected by the filter so any metal should be in the drain passages, pan, and filter.

If he will still warranty it, ide go that route. It would probably be cheaper for all parties involved since if metal got past the filter already, he is going to have to front the cost regardless and if no metal got past the filter then there is no harm to the engine.

I considered it. The problem with a comprehensive how-to, would be that at that point, everyones modifications are so different, that that how to really only applies to one car. For instance, I left some of my FMIC piping in the engine bay when i pulled my engine, again, when i reinstalled it, some may not be able to. My battery is in my trunk, so where i would skip the step of "remove battery box" someone else will need to.

If your cherry pickin on your own, your gonna have to know what your doing, or take on the responsibility.

There are certain tricks that make this kind of job easier. What are some of the tough spots of cherry picking the motor? Is it easy to line up when dropping it in? Anything noteworthy?

Also, is there any way to remove the timing cover and chain with the engine still in the car? It would be nice if the head could be removed with the engine still in there.

How is access to the chain with the engine in the car? Setting timing must be a pita.

Engine is out of the car and has been stripped down! I picked it up from the shop and dropped it off at another shop that is crating it up for me and it should be picked up late tomorrow or on thursday by the freight company depending on how long they take to crate it.

Wow man that sucks. I do think that it's good the DCR is helping you out though. I'm sure that it would hinder business otherwise. Good luck to you man.

Update From DCR:

"Engine arrived perfect. Pulled valve cover today. Looks like it needs only the intake cam. It damaged the end and also made it jump timing. Valves and everything else looks fine so far. We will pull pan tomorrow. Looks good so far."

Im so excited i almost did a backflip when i heard the good news!
