CBE Necessary The title is pretty self explanatory. I've been mulling over what to do next, and have been wondering whether or not to get a CBE. I already have a turboxs downpipe+racepipe (catless) so those already have made the exhaust sound significantly better and added power. I was wondering what everyone thought on whether I should get a CBE as well. I've been kicking around the forums and checked out the official exhaust thread to check and see some options and prices. Just wanted to see what everyone thought. Cheers |
If your look for power, skip the CBE. If you wanna sound like race car, go ahead. |
That basically answered my question haha. I was essentially wondering if a catback was necessary in making more power |

I believe @atvfreek; has mentioned seeing a 10hp gain on a fully tuned car with a CBE vs none, but I could be remembering wrong and, knowing these cars, that could just be the car and not the extra parts. |
Don't believe the bandwagoners...too many of them. Catback will add power...you're creating a larger delta pressure which helps drive flow. Will it be huge...no...but it's probably in the realm of 3-5%. I know I gained close to 10hp when I was on the k04 |
Don't quote me on this, but I remember reading on here the stock exhaust doesn't start limiting you until your in the low to mid 300s.. someone will definitely be able to chime in with a definitive answer, this has been covered but probably not the easiest to search. |
Catback will add more power, the larger the turbo, the more gain there is to be had. You could skip the cbe and get a 3in intake which will benefit you more. |
I saw gains after adding my Racing Beat catback. They weren't huge, but there were gains none the less. I think I have a VD chart of a before and after (on the same map). I'll post in it a bit, if you would like. :) |
I made well over 400whp with the stock CBE... At those power levels going to my CNT CBE netted me 20whp. |

Because racecar. That's why I have a 3'' straight pipe and no other power mods. Well, to my defense I bought it that way. |
i was woundering this as well...i have the stock exhaust and i hear mixed stories about power with a 3inch catback. Anyone have any before after dyno? |
Still from above posts, a CBE or a straight pipe will yield mild results on a K04. People who have upgraded and dyno typically state sub 5% gain. |
1 Attachment(s) I know this isn't a real Dyno, but it gives you an idea. These logs were done one day apart (so very close ambient temps), and on the same map. |
All my detailed before/after data is here: http://www.mazdaspeedforums.org/foru...xhaust-121759/ Here is just the VD: http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j6...Ebothat69F.jpg It would appear that from 5000 RPMs and up I have gained right about 20 WHP. It certainly feels like it pulls a fair amount harder up top and multiple Virtual Dyno logs appear to confirm that the above is not a fluke (other than the higher torque on the lower RPMs range with the stock CBE, that does appear to be anomalous to that pull). |
I've seen on quite a few occasions that a CBE will add gains, especially when flirting with above 300hp. Like stated above, on the k04, not huge, but there are gains. Even going beyond "peak numbers" a CBE seems to hold power longer, no matter the turbo. The bigger the turbo, the bigger the gains will be.... Plus a CBE just sounds mean. With @eric@edgeautosport; having a huge sale, I say early x-mas present for yourself. lol |
