CNT Catback installed today

Just finished up my CNT catback on my Genwon. I like the sound but am excited to see what happens after i break it in. anybody have any experience with this system?

ckMS3 03-20-2013 01:42 PM

I didn't notice it get much louder after break in. Wish it was a little louder but I like it too.

Mortose 03-20-2013 01:51 PM

no real volume increase. had mine on for 15K. Still love it.

Saw in your sig u have the CNT DP as well. How is it? noticeable difference? or should i head down another DP road?

boostdmazda3 03-20-2013 02:51 PM

i have the hks catback which is the same shit...i hate it its very monotone. I want CPE i think with no muffler just a res.

Is that a Huffy? 03-20-2013 02:54 PM

^^^ima fan for sure could be louder but not gonna complain just happy to make any upgrade from stock haha

T2J 03-20-2013 03:11 PM

I haven't heard any difference in the long run either. Even with a test pipe, it's still fairly quiet. Maybe try removing the resonator?

boostdmazda3 03-20-2013 03:13 PM

the stock catback for the gen one is not very restrictive and sounds good other then the droning. I had the downpipe with both res's cut out it was NASTY. Snap crackled and popped.

bang for the buck, its a great DP. no issues at all. the only thing that came up, and i put it in the review on there site, is that the lower two bolts for the bellmouth are a pain in the dick!

There really isn't alot of room to get a tool on them, so alot of small turns with a box wrench got it done.

BigBoostMS3 03-20-2013 06:48 PM

I love mine. I didn't notice it get louder at all, but it crackles more now.

I managed to get the last catless DP back in October (they went on backorder for a couple months after that) as well and put them on together. I'm extremely pleased with the combo. Plus the price was awesome. I got it from @ERZperformance;

I only had that issue with one, but it was easy to work around. I put the DP halfway on the studs, started the bolt, and hand tightened it as I moved the DP farther onto the studs. Once it was all the way down all the other bolts went on with no problems.

Of course, I realized that I had to do this after I had all 4 other bolts on so I had to remove them first. Still, it only added 10 minutes to the job. For the price, you can't beat the combo.

SC08Speed3 03-20-2013 07:22 PM

I've had mine on for a couple thousand miles and haven't really noticed it get any louder! It crackles and pops a little more, but i love it!

well im not 100% satisfied with it and the guys at my shop said i could just cut out the muffler and staright pipe it (which i already knew) but not sure how it will sound. i wanna be loud but no backfiring or any of that shit

Koke382 03-21-2013 08:07 AM

yeah i feel ya but i gotta get fuel pump internals first haha and AP but as far as the CBE the way it sounds at around 2900 RPMs is how i want it to sound idling and get louder as i climb the RPMs. it sounds essentially stock after 3200RPMs :(

Is that a Huffy? 03-21-2013 08:42 AM

Yeah im do that this saturday and just straight pipe it. i refuse to be "eh" with my car haha

xtasy 03-23-2013 02:35 AM

I'm planning to order a CNT CBE, my turboxs exhaust is just way too loud for me now. Drones like crazy at 80 mph.

About how much louder is catles dp + cnt exhaust?
I just want an exhaust that doesnt wake up the neighbors when i come home at night.

Part of the reason I picked the CNT was because it wasn't obnoxiously loud. There's enough posts/videos that you can tell what it will sound like with a little research.

How much louder than stock is it? It's not "loud" per say, but it is a lot more deep and it crackles on deceleration. If you want quiet, put your stock catback back on. My neighbors haven't complained (but one has an EVO and one has a WRX and they both have exhausts of their own lol).

Koke382 03-23-2013 08:40 AM

if u remove the res it will drone, if u want it to be louder buy a test pipe/rave pipe. u can get one used for 50 buks. I instaled my cnt catback before my catless cnt downpipe and i can tell u it made a huge difference in sound once i got the downpipe on. it sounds deeper louder (not exagerated) and cleaner then other set ups ive heard.

with the racepipe it will get louder.

I installed my catback at the same time as my downpipe, so my comparison is stock turbo back vs CNT turbo back.

I'm still in love with the way it sounds.

Imo YouTube videos doesn't really tell you how loud it sounds but how it sounds. When I first got my turbo xs, I did my search on YouTube. The videos weren't that loud. But when I got it. It was loud as Shit.

And I would put my exhaust back on if I still have it. Otherwise I wouldn't think about getting another exhaust.

Is that a Huffy? 03-25-2013 08:54 AM

So its been almost a week or so and the break in period seems to be showing some noticable differences. its a tiny bit louder but whats really made me happyier is i can actually hear it while idling and it rumbles more when climbing RPMs so ill give it anothe week and see if the straight pipe is even neccessary haha

T2J 03-25-2013 09:58 AM

Sorry to thread jack, but how do you guys like your cnt catless dp? @BigBoostMS3; @Koke382; Any regrets or downsides on getting the catless?
I'm still trying to decide whether I want to go catted or catless.

blackrs99 03-25-2013 10:01 AM

Lol, since when does a piece of pipe have a break-in period? you're just getting used to it, leave it be another few hundred miles and it will grow on you...

None at all. It sounds great, makes awesome power, and the price was right.

The only problem is that the car is registered where I should have cats, but since I live out of state (and the car never goes back) I don't care. Plus by the time the emissions needs retested, it will be paid off and registered here.

Catless all the way.

Just don't accidentaly start the car with your garage door shut. You'll leave a giant soot stain all over it.

The sides of the pipes get coated with carbon and what not, changes the resonance of the piping (slightly). Honestly it won't have much of an effect.

navyspeed3 03-25-2013 11:16 AM

If you want loud just run DP and have a dump put on the end of it.

Is that a Huffy? 03-25-2013 07:48 PM

Can't run a DP don't have fuel pump internals rule 1 of this car

Koke382 04-08-2013 09:20 PM

No regrets and i love how it sounds
now that im set vta on my bov i backfire and it sounds sick lol no cats n vta !!! ftw bcuz racecar

Is that a Huffy? 04-18-2013 08:51 PM

Hahah what kind of backfire are we talkin? I might take the same route if I like what I hear haha I planned on goin catless

@BigBoostMS3; @Koke382; sorry to ressurect a lost thread, but how much has drone increased?

I have an ebay catless and stock cbe with 1 res out, (just added the catless pipe, already had the res out) and it's headachy on my 25 min commute.

Trying to see if its better to try to weld the res back in, or just go with a CNT CBE (if you think it'd solve the problem).

BigBoostMS3 10-31-2014 11:41 AM

I don't think it's that bad, at least until I'm on the phone. it's loud but it's not obnoxious IMO. I drove 3-400 miles a week with it for nearly 2 years. Motor is blown now so I got a new truck, now it's a non-issue.

Jkspeed 10-31-2014 11:56 AM

Ha non issue. Thanks for the input. What kind of truck did you get?

A couple of locals have the CNT catback with a DP. I'll tag them for you.

@Gr8Speed; @Opdahl; @captain slow;

Gr8Speed 10-31-2014 12:08 PM

I ran an eBay downpipe with a CNT catback and loved it. No drone and nice raspy tone.

09speedaddict 10-31-2014 01:38 PM

Curious to know what kind of mass airflow (g/s) people are seeing with CNT DP? I have one (catted) myself and i'm seeing around 265ish max. I've changed intakes as well (went from 2.75" Injen CAI to 3.5"JBR WP SRI) and didn't see a noticeable increase. Leads me to believe i'm getting stoppage at the back end...

Gr8Speed 10-31-2014 01:42 PM

330g/s on a bnr with stock catback. 340g/s with CNT.

09speedaddict 10-31-2014 02:13 PM

BNR is clearly the motivator in your case. I'm on KO4... still ha. Thanks for the input. Glad to see the 10g rise though

stockms3 10-31-2014 02:35 PM

I'm waiting for mine to get here. I am very pleased to read that it's not too loud. I'm running egay downpipe and had a stock exhaust with two resonators removed.....it was SUPER loud. Too much for me.
