Cobb STS squeak/vibrate Hey guys... been searching the better part of the afternoon now looking for info here on this issue but haven't been able to find some. Might not be looking hard enough, but here goes. Been having an intermittent (very, until the past week) squeaking sound while downshifting, and sometimes sitting still at idle. It would come from in the cabin and was sometimes accompanied by this terrible vibrating noise. I took it to my Mazda dealer and the tech took it for a road test, heard the noise and apparently knew exactly what it was. He said it had to do with my shift linkages and asked if I had an aftermarket shifter, saying that the Cobb STS (which I have) has squeaked before in his experience. I hadn't even mentioned I had the Cobb in there but he said that's exactly what it was. Has anyone else had this issue? If so how did you go about fixing it? He said he could but he'd have to take the assembly apart to find where the noise is coming from and it's not covered under warranty.. and at $100/hr labor I'm not dealing with that shit. |
I do not have a COBB, but I have a TWM STS and have not had any of the problems you are mentioning. There were a few issues with COBB's piece when it first came out. My solution to you would be to check it out for yourself. Take your center console out and play around with it. Better yet, maybe you should go on a rampage like others. Start by saying how shitty the company is, send threatening Emails to the owner of the company, all while not contacting the company at hand. Then blame all the problems with your car on said company and do not try to alleviate your issues. People will hop on the wagon and hate COBB now. Assholes. |
Yeah man I hear that... all the hate for the CP-e stuff now. I love cobb, that's why I have the V1 FMIC, the SRI/TIP, the AP, and the STS... I'd have the DP too if CNT's wasn't so well priced and reviewed. I will however e-mail them to ask if they know about the issue and have had any fix recommendations and such. I looked around at the piece with all the console stuff removed and couldn't really find anything... I might just have to re-lube all the linkage connections and re-tighten everything down. Oi. |
Yes, grease the shit out of it. The more the better! Hopefully it can be resolved. Keep us posted! And most definitely contact COBB! |
Just contacted Stephen via e-mail since I still had it in my address book. I'll PM one of them on here too to make sure they know I e-mailed them and all that jazz. Hopefully they know the issue and can provide me with some advice, I'm not paying Mazda $100/hr. to fix this! |

My cobb sts has never squeaked or vibrated unusually. And yes smart guy, it's still installed. I'm not sure how it could squeak. It's isolated from the engine by the shift cables. There's no direct linkage. Have you tried putting your hand on the shifter when the noise/vibration is happening? If it's the shifter you should feel it, or it should stop when your hand dampens the vibration. |
I've tried that somewhat but I haven't been able to locate where it might be squeaking. It could very well be something with the shifter, the tech said it had to do WITH the linkages, but I don't know the specifics and I'm not about to pay to find out with the rates being what they are at the dealership. I also have the solid bushings from SU, but the only noise I think they'd make is the weird vibration sounds... I'm going to pull it all apart sometime in the near future and clean/re lube it all, and then re-tighten everything down. But... no real time to do so right now. Hate this shit. Always something with this car. lol Quote:

Yeah, it's odd. I haven't had a single issue until now. It's apparently mechanically sound but just makes the noise, so idk. I'll probably just switch it back to stock for now and snag a TWM. |
Good luck selling it. Might as well keep using it if nothing is wrong with it. |
Well that's the thing... Stephen contacted me back via e-mail and told me to just regrease everything and make sure that everything is tightened and to reapply loctite where needed... but he didn't actually confirm a yes or no as to having gotten the complaint before. I'm tempted to just shell out the money to my dealership tech because he seemed 100% confident in knowing what the problem was and how to fix it. I'll probably talk to him directly and see what he was planning on doing. I'll keep you guys posted. |
Decided to say fuck it and returned to the stock shifter... forgot what it felt like to drive a truck, lol. Either way, upon removing the Cobb, the squeak was CLEARLY from the shaft of the shifter where you push it down to engage reverse, couldn't find a good way to regrease it without taking everything apart so I didn't bother. The vibrating sound is still there but I'm trying to find what it might be, probably pennies or something, lol. Still... it's nice never second guessing what gear I'm in xD |
Well, of course the squeak that came from the Cobb unit once it was out wasn't the squeak i was hearing. After driving home from the friends house I was at to do the swap, it fucking squeaked the whole damn time. I'm so mad. Bringing it back to Mazda so they can diagnose it right without giving me this aftermarket blame bullshit. Bleh. |
