Well shit I got duped by the dubious Cobb inventory status. Ordered it on 2/12 and just was finally told that it was out of stock (after asking several times) today. It is supposed to ship in a week. Yeah right.

I waited over a month for mine to ship.

The Cobb DP (any DP afaik with our ride) with the stock catback is considerably louder. I mostly just cruised under the radar prior to the DP, but now I get people trying to flex on me left and right. Got a kill on a Corvette C5 last night who sounded like he gunned it near redline (loud as fuck), I wasn't expecting it, but luckily i was right at ~3200 so I had a long 4th gear full of power to pull through. He up shifted and I started to inch ahead. I didn't get a good look since after I pulled ahead he switched over 2 lines and took a right Anyway seems Mazda created the restrictive DP/intake to keep the noise down.

+1

Alot of manufacturers are doing this these days, which isn't a huge deal unless your cat disintegrates like the ones in the Spec V I used to have...it would break into small pieces and get sucked back into the engine and score the cylinder walls creating massive oil usage and eventual failure...Nissan finally admitted that they had a problem but would not acknowledge it on my '03 just on '02 and '04 as if it could possibly have skipped a year~WTF? So I traded it for my Speed.

Exhaust sounds really kick ass!

If the cat breaks up, it goes backwards? Back into the engine?

The exhaust pulls a vacuum??

Did you install yours yourself? I put my cobb catback in last night and it is contacting the bolt-in mid cassis plate. Can't seem to get it any higher. Did you run into this and what did you do? Thanks.

The problem with the Nissan 2.5 liter sucking back the cat is caused by how they deal with EGR. They do not have a seperate system that feeds the exhaust gases back up the intake they mess with the valve timing so that exhaust gases are pulled back into the cylinder via the exhaust valves. The cat is inches away from the exhaust valves. If you get any detonation in the exhaust or the infamous loose intake butterlfy screws that cause the ceramic cat to break down the engine will inhale that back in and grind the cylinder walls up.

I, after reading many horror stories and having done MANY exhaust installs in the past, decided to take it to a shop. If they screw something up there, they'd replace it.

I think the only issues they had were with trying to get the bolts out of the mani. Sounds like you're well beyond that step though.

Thanks Xandrake. Yep, everything went well, but the exhaust just contacts the bolt on chassis plate.

I think I have figured out why - the CPE DP has a gasketless design at the catback, and the catback uses the factory style doughnut gasket. Without the gasket it pulls the CBE forward about one inch causing contact. I rigged the gasket in there to test, which lengthened it, and the contact went away.

So I am thinking I will pull the gasket out and trim the plate to make some room. Seems like the best solution. I might check into one of those Spec chassis braces because it could have more room.

You know, I’d say it’s just about the same as stock, except quieter at idle and thankfully much less drone. Way less drone on deceleration, a bit less on the freeway too. To me it sounds very stock-like at WOT.

To be honest I’m not all that excited about the Cobb exhaust. It’s just SOOOO quiet! What I mean is this is not really an “exciting” exhaust that sounds all raspy and mean and face melting.

The CPe downpipe to the factory MS3 exhaust seems louder to me. Maybe the Cobb needs to break in a little, I’ve only had the chance to drive it about 20 miles. But like you pointed out, I’m not 19 and tolerant of a loud car that attracts cops etc. So anyway I think I am going to really love this exhaust!

Idle is almost silent inside the car. Sounds pretty nice and deep from outside though.

XANDRAKE – is your DP catless? Maybe that’s the difference?

Mine is catted Cobb, yes.

I'm honestly surprised that there is no change in "aggressive" sounds. Mine took about 100 miles to break in, but it sounds pretty raspy and deep, just not insanely loud. I'll have to make a video damn it.

But yes, you're correct. Almost drone-free, which is exactly what I was looking for.

okay, I've driven it a little more and it's pretty nice. It's exactly what I was looking for - quiet but still aggressive. It must be breaking in a little. Loving the zero drone! That must be why it seems so quiet... I guess before it was just always making noise.

BTW, I just heard from Cobb and they CONFIRMED THIS CBE IS DISCOUNTINUED!

Jeff,

We did discontinue the MS3 cat-back exhaust, but if your order was placed with one of our dealers it is likely that it will still be shipped out. I would recommend contacting your dealer to see if you can get an update on your order. Let me know if you have any other questions.

It's a nice peice so I am sorta suprised they are discontinuing it - i mean it's already developed! Maybe it's a pain to keep in stock.

I love the unit, but from a company standpoint, they changed the design of the 2010 Mazda3, and from the pictures, it appears that the exhaust on the 2010 speed3 has changed. Since the market is flooded with CBE's and they are not making anymore Speed3s in the current fashion, what's the point in producing more?

It sucks, but from a business standpoint, it's just business.

you can bet I plan on getting one before they are all gone!

I've never been as impressed with an exhaust as I have been with this one.

It's beautifully welded and looks great. I'm glad that performance companies are taking into mind that we're all not kids anymore and don't want the loud exhausts.

I give this 2 BIG thumbs up.

Thanks Cobb!
definately good news on that. ive been running cp-e's tbe for a few months now and the noise is drivin me crazy. just ordered a cobb tbe after hearing it was pretty quiet. cant wait to get it and hook it up.

I've been considering getting the cp-e tbe, how much louder is it than stock?

so who has the cobb in stock? it's discontinued along with a few other parts of theirs, which seems stupid and makes me not want to buy anything cobb. i can't see why you would discontinue an established part when selling parts is how you make money. but it sounds like what i'm looking for in an exhaust.

I would go with cp-e but it's too damn loud.

Surgeline said they had a few a couple days back, might check with them, I'm sure there are still a few out there. Google it and hit a few of the sites.

Just because a business is trying to not fail financially and has to halt production on parts that aren't selling well shouldn't make you stray from a company.

It costs to stock a product that doesn't sell.

I've been told Cobb will re-start production of the same identical CBE in the future.

I was inquiring about why StreetUnit has the Cobb CBE on sale still (which it really isn't)... I also found the CBE claiming to be in stock at another website... JDMsomething that has tons of options... and asked Cobb if they're reputable... they didn't know of them.

But I did research and found them to be pretty scam happy.

Anyways after getting an answer Cobb told me they didn't have an ETA but would be re-producing the same design in the future for our gen-wins.

Also good news because then I will be able to resist modding for a short time while I wait for more CBE options... and also maybe to see how Sure's FMIC turns out...
