Cost of going fully built

I know a lot of guys on here built their motors. Can you guys chime in on the costs involved (especially those of you in the DC area)? I'm not looking to do the work myself. My motor is running fine, at the moment.

Parts Wise I have spent $1435 and I need to order rod bearings.

Having the rods&pistons installed bumped the engine swap (i have a blown motor) from $500 to $700. I havent been quoted on the machine shop cost for honing/boring the block.

some of my parts come in on thursday and im scheduled for shop time in two weeks

i wouldn't say there are alot of built motors on here.

Built with all the bits that go with it...in excess of 10k is my guess.

By bits I mean clutch and brakes as well...you need some more whoa with that go.

not really, since we aren't making big numbers yet.

almost 3 grand for parts: Rods, pistons, bearings, studs, gaskets, clutch, flywheel. then like 1800 for labor if you bore it some, balance it, cleaned etc.. Also that's if there is nothing else wrong that needs to be fixed... And assuming you pull the block and put it back yourself.

So like 3600-4000 depending on what you wanna do

My build and associated parts was ~$12K... I did get assraped buy the shop that did the actual swap labor, but I had a TON of stuff done all at once..

spnkr21 10-06-2009 07:06 PM

yea that was assuming just the motor and internals. No BT or mani's or anything else.

edit: and no head work

About 2300 to pull the motor and tear it down arond 2 grand or so for machine shop work plus whatever parts u go with. Pull the motor yourself if u can save a good chunk

austin102085 10-06-2009 11:15 PM

i got all the parts for like 1900. labor is where its at. 2 diff shps here gave me 2 diff prices from 1500-2200 to pull/tear down/ build.

flyrevs2 10-06-2009 11:18 PM

yes, pulling the motor / re-installing will save you $2k

You guys are paying alot for labor. Remember this is a tough economy for most and spending money on car mods isnt a high priority for most, so there are deals to be had on labor. However, the cheaper labor here in Houston might be due to the quantity of shops we have. Its way to easy to find a place to do work for you if another place quotes you a stupid price.
