Cost of Tranny Flush

I got 20k on the clock. Gears feel like they don't like me as much anymore.

What tranny fluid and how much to get the job done?

martin_nj 01-14-2011 02:55 PM

did you learn to drive stick on this car?

XLT_66 01-14-2011 02:57 PM

Nope. Been driving a stick for years. The gears are fine really. I can feel a bit of notchiness in some gears when I engage really slowly. I'm guessing most of what I'm feeling is from the colder weather lately.

Regardless, I wanted to put in a higher quality fluid to make things even more buttery.

xcoldricex 01-14-2011 03:07 PM

search there's a big thread about tranny fluid. most of your problems are probably from the weather - which may or may not be improved with the fluid.

XLT_66 01-14-2011 03:10 PM

Yeah, I know I've read the thread but I can't find it for some reason. I've even written down the fluid I was interested in. Can't find it.

If someone happens to know...just post it up. How much it set ya back?

xcoldricex 01-14-2011 03:12 PM

free - do it yourself.

also, the thread is a fluorescent green sticky, it's pretty easy to find.

Need that documentation son!

Amsoil
Redlline MT-90
Motorcraft linked above.

For what its worth, I just put in Amsoil at ~41K (MS6) and have noticed a slight improvement on cold shifts. 1 to 2 specifically. Once it warms up, its still smooth but probably not really noticeable vs. what I replaced. I paid about $30 for the fluid and changed it myself.

Stealth01 01-14-2011 04:16 PM

I used MT-90 and did it myself. Took 45 minutes, cost me $40.

yea save some money ... its easy as a oil change .. maybe easier because you just drain and fill.

Look for the correct weights of fluid and get redline fluid. I think I did my trans, front and rear diff for under $100

Gonna do mime today for the first time. Picked up three quarts of Redline MT-90 for less then $40.

Yours must take less than ours, because mine took just over three qts, I think....

Yeah, speed6 must be different cause the 3 takes something like 2.95qts or to be more technical, slightly less than 3qts.

I cant remember what my Speed 6 took just changed all the fluids at once but at 30,000 miles they looked clean still. The smell now thats a diff story.

Sphincter 01-23-2011 05:05 PM

Mine took 3qts. Tranny fluid was black after 35K miles, is that normal?

ms3_kidd 01-23-2011 05:22 PM

changed my trans fluid on Friday, at 18.5k
went with the ford stuff, set me back 70 bucks for 4 qts at dealer pricing, the car took just over 3 qts so i have well over a half quart left over.

the best 70 bucks i ever spent

I vaguely recall that transmission fluid should be changed every 40-50k miles with synthetic fluid. Am I right? I changed my stock transmission fluid at 20k miles to Redline MT-90 and I now have 55k miles. Also, what is the recommended mileage for changing the front and rear differential fluid?

Random question: How often should the radiator fluid be flushed? ::hijack complete::

If you've got the FL22 shit, I believe it's 120k miles.

Sorry for being a noob, but what's the FL22 shit? I changed my tranny fluid a long time ago and can't recall "FL22." Also, how do you like your Bridgestone RE760 sports?

phillyb 03-03-2011 10:25 AM

fl22 is coolant.

AtTheDriveIn 03-03-2011 10:32 AM

I also ordered the Red Line oils and a nifty hand pump. I'm doing my tranny, transfer case, and diff next week. I have about 70K on the clock and I'm pretty sure this car hasn't seen any new fluids.

For the MS6 guys. If you plan to go with Red Line, get 75w90NS for the diff. It has friction modifiers for the clutches. Not sure about Amsoil.
