counterweight on or off or cobb

so after going through an fmic install, the stock counterweight might be a problem.
i want to get impressions from people who have either taken their counterweight off or who have upgraded to the cobb counterweight.

the stock weight was heavier than i thought, and i didn't know whether or not i'd be able to feel a difference in the shifter or while shifting, but i took it off...

and i like it a lot fucking better than with the weight on the car. it feels more mechanic and it makes me feel a little closer to the tranny...like...we're on a good date, and now i want to take her back home and hit it all night. like that kind of intimacy with the transmission.

who else has fucked with the counterweight?

rodrigo 10-20-2008 05:02 PM

your girflriend needs to give up the poo nanny more often..cuz u talking sweet love about your tranny

phillyb 10-20-2008 05:03 PM

that's funny...she woke ME up to fuck the other night...

rodrigo 10-20-2008 05:07 PM

your tranny?

Eazy 10-20-2008 05:15 PM

Lol, you guys crack me up. My shifter weight was taken off and will never go back on. I love how it feels now.

blaggah 10-20-2008 05:16 PM

philly's desire to get intimate with a tranny frightens me....

but as far a the counterweight goes, I've had mine off for over an year. I put it back on about a month ago, and that lasted about 2 days before i removed it again.

Same, had mine on and off several times.

I currently have it on and do not like it. I love the lighter shifts without the counterweight.

i threw my stock one in the mill and took some weight off it then resprayed it black and im happier with it ... never drove it with it off, but definitely see it pointless to buy one from cobb when you could just take a saw to the stocker for free lol

aaronc7 10-20-2008 05:47 PM

off or cobb weight is what i use. hate the stock one

Grim 10-20-2008 06:24 PM

had it off and hated it,i just put it back on and forgot how better it feels

skeeter149 10-20-2008 06:31 PM

i took it off drove for a day with people and they said that if they felt it in my driving that it was different. so after having my wife drive fer her impression it went on and man am i loving the smoothness like somebody put a tub of ky jelly on it. oh yeah!!!! maybe the lighter cobb one is better but i need something on there to help me get it in.... gear you sickos get it in gear.lol

+1 love it

i bet theres some poor sap at mazda right now reading this and his entire job was to make and design that counter weight and all you guys just scrapped it and now he masturbates in the corner with his own tears.......

ANYWAY, i thought it was a little too much with it off so i just made my own new one using a block of steel. its about half the weight of the stocker. its perfect

phillyb 10-21-2008 10:30 AM

hahahahaha

mdogg 10-21-2008 10:37 AM

unbolt it
throw it away
never look back

I took it off and didn't really care for it. I just bought the Cobb and like it much better then the stock. It feels much more evenly weighted.

My biggest problem was when AutoXing. Getting on the brakes hard and shifting from 3rd to 2nd, I know it went in gear but from the force of braking the damn weight forced it out of gear. A few other guys with Speeds found the same problem. Even one guy (amature racer car driver) got in and had the same problem. Mind you he beat my time bu like 3 seconds and was the first time driving the car. He is good!

Anyway I have not tried the Cobb on the AutoX yet but I suspect it won't be as bad as the stocker but if I miss a down shift to 2nd with it I am going to do my next runs with it off.

phillyb 10-21-2008 01:11 PM

my second gear has a problem popping out of gear.
most of the time this happens, i have just down shifted from third and i'm braking a little bit in addition.
taking the weight off has helped a lot, but not cured my problem

I took my counterweight out, liked it until I noticed sometimes it was hard to get in 2nd-3rd. Put it back in, it was fine. So I compromised. I cut off some of stock weight with a sawzall, and it feels much better now! Not too much weight, but enough to make for better shifts.

That is about the sounds of the Cobb shift weight.

another reason to take it off:

think about how heavy that thing is....when u miss a shift all that weight is slamming into the shift forks inside the transmission. Take that weight and slam it into your hand a few times, thats what ur transmission feels if u miss a gear.

so take it off.....or cut some of it off....your transmission will thank you.
