Cracked tubular manifold reports?

I couldn't edit my post about the porting the stock exhaust manifold because of the screwy post times - I was wondering has anyone had any of their aftermarket tubular manfiolds for the ms3 crack? How long have you been running your tubular manifold without any cracking issues?

cracked manifolds:

PG
madvillian's friend - pg v1
xcoldricex's friend - pg v1 - BT
phillyb - pg v3 - K04
briangt3076 - pg v3 - BT
jessed87 - pg v3 - BT

dnp:
superskaterxs - dnp - K04
bykeryder4life - dnp - K04?

other:
spnkr1 - DCR modular - BT

phillyb 03-28-2010 02:34 PM

about 3 months without a crack
pg v3

xcoldricex 03-28-2010 02:52 PM

for the record a local had a pg (i think v1) crack on his ms6 in a month.

madvillain 03-28-2010 07:40 PM

It all depends. A local friend of mine has had his PG v2 crack, running an EWG and 3076. There is a big lack of reinforcements on his for some reason, especially where the EWG tube is. Too much vibration. He just got a v3 and it is teh sex. But on the other hand I've had mine on the car, who i bought from another local, with 10,000 on it and it is flawless, and for sale :sombrero: Ken also has a lifetime warranty on it. hint hint hint.

I have the XtremeBoost mani on for 2 months so far and no problems. Just contact Frank and he will take care of you.

superskaterxes 03-28-2010 08:06 PM

my DNP cracked before i braced the EWG. th braces also cracked and the part near the collector cracked. no problems that i know of since ive had it off last

how long were you running it before it cracked and how long have you been running it since?

xcoldricex 04-01-2010 03:48 PM

bump

SpeedSixxx 04-01-2010 04:19 PM

Medievil mani 6 months, no cracks.

sometimes when working on my car some crack rocks fall out and land on the mani then I just huff and huff till i'm zooted.

xcoldricex 04-05-2010 09:30 AM

spnkr21's dcr cracked in 4 months. luckily it looks like he just had to take the vband section off and 4 turbo studs to go get it rewelded.

aaronc7 04-05-2010 09:32 AM

8 months or so id say on a ceramic coated pg v1 (it also had miles on it before the coating...quite a bit but not sure how much)

still workin good

Right on the weld. It's really easy to take off so I'm lucky but still sucks it happened. I was hammering on the car though. Pulls like a mofo and boost is there wicked fast. Can't wait to get it going again tomorrow :)

xcoldricex 04-05-2010 09:53 AM

yeah, shouldn't matter if you were hammering on the car - well i guess it puts more stress with all the engine movement and the turbo not being well supported...

would be a bitch to reweld any of the other welds though right? iirc you had to drop the engine off the mounts and use a cherry picker to install that thing right?

Re: Cracked tubular manifold reports?

Well you just have to undo the pass MM to get it to slide in. And I know that it should've lasted while hammering on it. I just said that because of how much fun this car is again. Well when it's not broken

I have a dnp, it was on tizi's car for about 30k then on mine for maybe 15k more. It has cracks on the two support bars that go from flange to flange, and tiny cracks where the collector is. Never made any problems for me though and I checked it for leaks, they were VERY small.

get exhaust putty and putty them up...LOL

or just have the mani re ceramic coated that will stop the ;leaks for another 20k

phillyb 06-06-2010 10:15 PM

bump, cracked pg. very small.
we'll see.
gotta take pics when i get mah camera back.

cld12pk2go 06-09-2010 05:28 AM

I have had my PGv1 on since April 08. Probably 30k miles.

So far no obvious issues.

Hmmmm.. I wish there were more positives

Dont know if this has been asked, but is the cracking caused more due to one of these than the other?

1. Engine movement - Could be minimized with stiffer mounts (stiffen all 3 or 4 including kicker)
2. Heat cycles fatiguing the metal and welds - Dont know what can be done about this

NJSPEED3 07-08-2010 04:33 PM

PG V2 2nd owner ive put 10k on it no problems.

Jessed87 07-10-2010 12:04 AM

Just fully cracked my PG v3 right at the collector. I'm fucking pissed.

rodrigo 07-10-2010 12:05 AM

Stock snail or something else? Was it braced?

BrianZX10R 07-10-2010 10:27 AM

jess is 3076 also. And my PG v3 is destroyed after 7k miles. A 3 inch long crack on the turbo flange. Both sides of support bar cracked all the way around. 2 runners cracked nearly completely off with about 1/2 inch left on runner 3 and 4 still holding it together to the engine side flange. and misc. I was dealign with intense metal vibrating sounds coming from mani but i was trying to deal with it. then it had a bad leak and a hissing sound from the runner. it was a chunk of weld that blew out and left a big hole in runner 3.

Jessed87 07-10-2010 10:27 AM

A gt3076 with external wastegate. The manifold has bracing but I don't know how I would go about bracing the turbo. any suggestions?

On a side note I am having synapse turbo make me a custom manifold because they have a local shop. As long as they can get a hold of the mazda flanges it will be for a mazda flange externally wastegated turbo. I have to ask them how it will work but I know they will be available to buy after they make mine and have the designs. These guys make beautiful manifolds. Check out their other manifolds on this site .: Home :: Synapse Turbo :.

cld12pk2go 07-10-2010 11:03 AM

I was asking since the stock turbo has a bracing bracket from the underside. Sounds like we will need something similar if using the PG manifold with a BT.

I agree. I think that PG or PTP would make some $$ if they could come up with some sort of bracket :ponder:

xcoldricex 07-10-2010 11:16 AM

just for the collective knowledge:

seems like they crack more often with BT's (since the turbos are not supported/braced) but they still crack with the stock turbo (e.g. phillyb)

cracked manifolds:

madvillian's friend - pg v1
xcoldricex's friend - pg v1 - BT
dcr (spnkr1) - BT
phillyb - pg v3 - K04
briangt3076 - pg v3 - BT
jessed87 - pg v3 - BT

dnp:
superskaterxs - dnp - K04
bykeryder4life - dnp - K04?

i'll put this in the op

charlesfist 07-10-2010 09:31 PM

Just wondering, did Philly pick up his v3 used from someone perhaps running a BT?

BrianZX10R 07-10-2010 09:35 PM

if it means anything. JM fabrication who is one of the best welders and fabricators around told me when he looked at my pg mani that it was cheap and the welds were shit. he said i would be lucky if it lasted a few months. you get what u pay for IMO. PG makes cheap mani's with even cheaper welds
