Just a note...I replaced my original axles with two new DTA axles from ebay and...they are clicking like crazy. Worse than the 10-year old axles that they replaced. I'm pretty pissed. I have less than 700 miles on them probably. I messaged the seller on ebay, hopefully they offer some compensation or something.

Do not do it if nothing is broken or making noise. The OEM CV joints are quite strong and most aftermarket ones wear out fast. If you must do it, the only safe bet I know is to go OEM. BTW, they are NOT the same as for the regular Mazda 3.

This. OEM aren't cheap but I was able to get my local stealership to price match an online price, which allowed me to get the core charge back without paying for shipping.

One additional thought: If you are getting a clicking or similar repetitive noise at slow speed tight turns, listen closely to where it is coming from. If it is definitely from the left or right side it may be a CV joint.

But . . . there is another source and the fix is easy. If the sound is coming from under the center of the car halfway between the front wheels, it may be the limited slip differential in the transaxle.

If so the fix is usually easy. First check to see if the diff fluid is full. Next, know that our type of limited slip needs a friction modifier added to the diff fluid. Over time, it tends to lose its ability to do its job. It just eventually wears out. You need to add new friction modifier.

A four ounce bottle of Red Line friction modifier is all that is needed. I think it is less than $10 and worth every penny.

If your diff is full, you may need to drain out a bit to make room, or this might be a good time to drain and refill. If so, put the friction modifier in first, so you can then top off with the diff fluid.

And it is a 15 minute job, 30 max ,if you need to completely drain and refill with diff fluid.

So, listen carefully to where the sound is coming from before you automatically assume you need an expensive OEM CV joint plus the removal and installation time or expense.

I'm getting an oscillating / subtle clanking noise at highway speeds but only when on the gas. Its not totally speed dependent. It only happens at 45-55 + when on throttle and oscillating noise increases with speed but only to a point.

Both my front wheel bearings were changed at 100k. Im at 143k now. One of my axles is DTA. The other is the original. Im thinking it might be the axle carrier bearing.

Either he carrier bearing or a bearing in the trans or perhaps one of the CV joints. Impossible to isolate at speed. One of my CV joints has been making a whirring noise at low speed sharp turns for like 70k miles but all boots are intact.

Anyone had an axle carrier bearing fail? IF so what were your symptoms?
