Default CV Boots are done-- need CV SHAFTS

So i was putting on my wheel spacers the other day and i noticed that my front two tires had grease all on the inside of them. I looked behind the caliper and saw that there was even more all over. So even though there are no noises coming from the joints when i turn or anything i am aware that the installation of a new boot, grease and all that junk is just as much $ as installing new CV shafts. Only problem is Mazda quotes them for around 600-700 which is just insane when i hear i can supposedly get them for around 150.
my question is where can i find them? i have searched on here and posted in the few threads about this and still haven't found anything.
---my closest attempt was here: RockAuto Parts Catalog <--click link and type in "cv half shaft assembly" in the search bar.

only thing wrong with those is that someone in another thread posted this picture:

Compared to that of Rockauto:

He brought up the point that the two have differences in appearance and may not fit..
Anyone have input on rockauto's shafts? anyone purchased elsewhere they can share?

(and please don't suggest getting a new boot replacement kit, I'm already committed to this fix.... if i can find it)

-thanks a lot guys

Just a heads up, likely a waste of reading time, but....

As much as I love RockAuto, they have been a fail for the Speed6 front CV axles, listing & shipping NA 2.3 axles as speed6 axles.

Yours are completely different looking than ours, but since you guys have the same NA vs DISI issue as the Speed6's, I just wanted to say pay attention and beware.

Fuck, wish I would have seen this 7 hours ago as I ordered new axels from rock auto.
Guess we will see if they got their shit in line for the speed6.

If you're bored, the fail story of my passenger CV starts here. RA did get teh drivers side correct.

Fun Monday night- swapped my drivers front CV Axle - Mazda 6 Forums : Mazda 6 Forum / Mazda Atenza Forum

The short version, look for the crown nut. Again, I can't speak for the Speed3's, but on the Speed6 axles:

Start with price- I'm finding almost everyplace that I can positively identify the axles that the Speed6 fronts are ~ double the cost of the normally aspirated (NA) axles- that is, roughly, ~$99 each.

Dimensions:
The Speed6 axles have a much larger nut, 35mm -vs- 32mm, on the splines/hub side. This is the one I've been using a 36mm socket on, by mistake apparently.
This nut size can also be referred to as M24-1.5 on the Speed6, and as M22-1.5 for the smaller NA axle.

Spline section diameter on the speed6 is 32.5mm, and is only 29mm on the NA axle.

I have more, but you get the point.

If you got the Speed3 axles from RockAuto, they will fit. I just put one in a car a few weeks back, and they fit fine. As for strength, that's questionable. But, for like $75, it got the car rolling.

Let me know if anyone needs OE Part #'s for axles or axle parts.

Edit: Here's the exact one that was ordered for the driver's side: http://www.ebay.com/itm/2007-2009-Ma...181#vi-content

Check out the pic I just uploaded, what parts from there do you need? The OE complete axles are EXPENSIVE, just FYI.

I use to supply a shope with parts cleaner fluid that rebuilt cv joints. And the guy showed me how they did it.
Take it apart and clean all the grease off.
Take the bearing cage and bounce yes bounce it on the floor if it pinged it was good.
Look at the bearings and replace only the marked up ones.
Pack with new grease and new boot.

He said to me "hey if I get 1 out of 10 back who gives a fuck Im making a killing".

That was years ago and I hope things are better now.

@phate so the link you gave was the one you installed.. so you don't know if rock auto's will fit or how they are?

your statement on "questionable strength" was on the cv shaft from the link (MAC Auto) correct?

and as for what parts i need, it is exactly what you showed me. just i need both sides (driver side and passenger)

-thanks

WTF is wrong with you? I had the same issue as you, tiny tiny crack in the boot and it blew its load all over the wheelwell, took the cv out, got in the gf's focus, drove to a driveline shop, had it rebuilt (re packed, new boot, new clips, entire cv cleaned), gave the man behind the counter $60, drove home, put said cv back in the car, smiled, drank a beer.

OP, head down to oreilly auto parts and pick em up. They have them for like $65 for the speed6. Im sure they have em for the 3 as well. There are a few different sizes so get the correct one. They are 100% new axles, not old ones refurbished. Lifetime warranty too. Be mazdaspeed's guineau pig and let us know how it goes.

My passenger axle nut somehow fell off and I'm getting a shitty ass noise now... I would imagine after driving on it for a few days that way the wheel bearing and possibly the axle are junk? I'm going to stop by a local axle shop tmrw morning and see what I can do.. I'm hoping I can just throw on a new axle nut and drive away.. Thoughts?

Damn it! Anyone know a good site for a cheap passenger axle then? I'm still gonna stop by an axle shop to see about a rebuild.. I bought a driver side from mac auto not long ago but can't find a passenger..

In general I've noticed 3rd party drive shafts/CV joints on high TQ cars tend to fail after 5-10K of use. Some scattered complaints from the SRT-4, Evo and STI guys - mostly about the boots. It's $55 for the OEM half shaft boot kit, $87 for the CV boot kit (driver's side only). Most people will also pick up a new transmission seal while they're at it.

I will be interested to hear long term impressions on the EMPI.

I have a EMPI passenger shaft that seems to be holding up fine after 15000 miles. But my EMPI driverside shaft that was put in only THREE DAYS AGO has already failed. I will post pics after I get the piece of crap out of the car

Any good threads on how to do a swap? Mine just blew up today and needs to be swapped out. People have confirmed that the axles from Oriely's do indeed fit properly?

I'm sitting here with a pair of rock auto empi shaftes that look like correct parts, but I am returning the passenger side (and waiting for replacement) because the outer joint has a stiff metal on metal feel to it. Which I suspect would either wear in and fail early, or get hot and fail in three days

Going to add to this thread. My driver side CV joint is probably dead.

I'm about half a year into my Mazdaspeed Coilovers and in the last few weeks, I've been noticing an annoying "wonk wonk wonk gunk gunk gunk" sound on the smallest bumps. Last night, the noise became persistent and constant. So I parked the car and saw oil/grease all over the my driver side wheel well. I thought my strut were done.

Mazdaspeed Coilovers, SPC Rear Camber Arms, E46 M3 Front Endlinks

Went to O'Reilly because I wanted to rent a torque wrench. I was going to take out the wheel to take a picture, so I wanted a torque wrench for when I put the wheel back on. The guy at O'Reilly wanted to check out the car and he said there's grease all over the left outer boot of the CV joint.

I'm kind of glad then, because I can just let my extended warranty (I hope it covers suspension parts!) cover it, and not worry about blown struts or what not.

Did your warranty cover your blown CV joint? Mine blew today after the alternator cover screws backed out and the plastic piece fell down, slicing it open.

Just found green grease splattered all over inside my passenger side wheel. I checked the boot but can't see where it would be leaking. I'm not sure how to diagnose this as far as whether it may just need a new boot or what to look for if the half shaft needs to be replaced.

I did find this thread on replacement though: How to Remove/ Install New Front CV Joints/ half shaft on 2006 MS6

Quick update. I'm getting mine fixed under warranty. Didn't bother stocking out. They originally tried to say the alternator cover came off because "whoever did your downpipe" must have messed it up, but I did my downpipe and never took that cover off, so I shot down that claim. Then they tried to say it had to have been off because there is a clip that some wires are hooked to that would have held it up. After them not being able to show me said clip, they agreed to the warranty work.
