Default Cylinder Head Removed... now what? w/pics

So... my car overheated and died due to a stuck thermostat. With help from some of the threads on this forum, I was able to tear down my 2003 ms3 and get the cylinder head off. Here's what it looks like... hopefully these pics will attach.

Engine overheated bad and would not start. 2 shops said it was a blown head gasket. I did not want to pay their ridiculous prices, so I decided to tackle the job myself (very daunting it turned out to be lol). Not sure what to do at this point. Both the block and the head don't show anything extremely obvious other than carbon build up. I also couldn't see any chunks missing from the gasket. The pistons seem to still work right.

In conclusion, I am looking for a bit of advice... what else should I be looking for as far as damage from a severe overheat? Thanks for the help!

First you need to check and make sure the deck is flat. If not, the head and/or block may need to be machined.

Second, check and make sure the piston heights are all the same (that you didn't bend a rod or something)

you will need a new crank pulley bolt and friction washers, probably a good idea to do a new timing chain and tensioner, and you'll need a new headgasket, new head bolts too.

ROFL i just noticed this is a regular MZR, non DISI, non-turbo.

Most of what I said still applies tho.
@Jonny Quest for good measure

OP, It might just be me, but you might want to check you valves as well. It looks like there might be some heat damage on some of them.

You can clean up the machined surfaces and use a straight edge and a feeler gauge to test the straightness of the block. You just slide the feeler gauge underneath the straightedge and see how much it is out.

lol yea it's a nonturbo... it is a 2008 hatch 2.3L though (typo on my part). Engine is somewhat similar and this forum had the best breakdown guides, so I thought I would see what yall think...

All of the above big YES^^^

I am wondering if I should go deeper into the engine or not at this point. the pistons seem to be working properly (no bent rods). Are there any other common components that may have overheated that I should check? Head/headgasket I thought were the main culprits and I will be taking the head to a shop tomorrow. Thanks for the help!

There were enough similarities that these guides:
http://www.mazdaspeedforums.org/foru...-no-56k-19727/
How To: Assemble A Forged Motor
were quite useful to me as I have been working on the car.

While we're on the subject of stuff that should be replaced upon reassembly, what is the verdict on the crankshaft position sensor? or other sensors for that matter? I have confidence that I can time the mechanicals using the special tools at TDC, but I am not sure about the sensors. Any pointers on this would be most welcome...

Sorry I was a cheapo and could not afford the turbo lol. 5 speed man trans at least I appreciate you helping an outsider on these forums

mazdas247 is probably a better source for you...............but my guess is their tech only goes as far as which coilovers slam the car lowest to the ground.

Don't forget stickers..

@skeyes986

These engines are *somewhat* different from ours, I wouldnt take anything specific as applicable. general stuff like head bolts/gaskets/etc you will need. Other than that, you're better off at Mazda3forums or m247.

It's not out of asshatery, it's a fact that our engines are different.

Send the head out and have someone will knowledge check it out. Change head bolts. Reinstall everything. Turn key. Drive to dealership. Trade car in for a man's car so your balls come back and that nasty vagina you got falls off.

Good?
