Dammit, broke a valve cover bolt Hey guys, So I installed a polished valve cover today, and with everything, I followed as much of the Service Manual as I could and got everything down to the to point where I was torquing down the valve cover bolts. As recommended I set my Inch Pound torque wrench to 80 In/Lbs (8.0-10.5 N-m). Well I got down to the last one (in the order specified by the manual) and snap! The bolt head comes off. The bolt in question is on the driver's side corner further from the driver (if that makes sense). Anyhow, I'm wondering if this is something I can leave like this for a little while as I get my hands on an extractor and replacement bolt. Let me know what you guys think. |
Yes you can get away with having one busted bolt and not have to many issues. Nice thing about the valve cover on these cars is there are plenty of bolts. Just keep an eye on it and make sure you don't see oil seeping out the corner. |
You sure you didn't set it to 80 ft lbs? Always have to be careful when tightening anything into aluminum. Basic back out kit should fix it up. |
LOL I specially bought an Inch Lbs torque wrench for this specific job. |
Anyone know that the Mazda part number is for that bolt. I'll be borrowing an extractor from a friend soon, I'd like to have a bolt I can replace it with. |
That sucks! Torqued mine down to good enough. Didn't even care about torque. |
Contact your local Mazda dealer for the bolt and have one ordered for you. Shouldn't cost more than a couple of bucks |
Doesn't anyone have a list of the parts and such I would use? |
You need to drill a small hole in the bolt and the. Use the extractor in it. Drill bit will depend on size of extractor. Make sure you don't get one that is too big. It will say the bit size on the extractor packaging. As for the bolt, just ask local stealership, they'll have that for you |
Just a heads up, the part number for the valve cover bolt is: LFBL-10-237 |
wow that 8 bucks each, and yes i just revived this dinosaur because of part number |
+1 on that 8 bucks each, I'll just re-use the stock bolts lol |
LOL Yeah I was annoyed at the price, but when you end up breaking one, I guess you'll have to bend over and take it from the dealership. And considering the bolts have that proprietary gasket and washer built in you can't just use any old bolt :-( Either way, I wonder if you could find out the manufacturer of that bolt and not pay $8 (I paid $12 CDN) a piece. That way I could replace all of my rusty bolts with new ones. |
Yea I would like to replace all mine but it seems excessive |
You can probably send the old ones to my chrome plater and get them plated for cheaper lol. |
When replacing my engine i noticed that the newly replaced hpfp gasket started leaking. Squirting oil everywhere. I think i may possibly have an additional leak from two of these bolts as well. However strangely the new engine gasket set did not come with a new set of grommets. Anyone had issues of the bolt o-ring leaking??? $12 in my area per bolt. |
