Difficulty Putting Into Gear at Higher RPM Was driving home today and when I attempted to shift from 3rd into 4th, I couldn't. It was a hard shift on a pass. It took me a minute to find a gear that would work. Eventually I was able to get it into 6th, but I basically had to use all my might to get it in. I eventually tried to shift into 5th and 4th and its almost impossible at any speed above 35MPH. First to second is nearly impossible, to get anywhere I would go 1, 3, 5, 6 At low speeds, or when the car is parked. I can put it into gear with no problems. There is no smell, smoke or noise, just impossible to shift into gear. The other strange thing is that when I can actually get it into gear (I basically have to kick it in) the RPMs dont drop, they stay at around 3k and then as i accelerate they increase as normal. Any thoughts? Thanks |
I know that my shift weight hits on my intercooler piping if you have a front mount you could check that. |
Check to make sure all of your shift cables are seated properly also. Also look up how to adjust your shifter. I know there's a thread around here for that. |
Thanks. Ill take a look. Could the master or slave cylinder be the issue? Or would the symptoms be different? The issue at higher RPMs makes me believe it could be the synchros, but im not familiar with it.. just from what i've read and heard from other posts. ?? |
I haven't seen this problem here before, but that doesn't mean it hasn't happened before. I'm just starting at the easiest point to look. Check the fluid level and basic stuff first to rule out basic stuff. |
Thanks everyone. I checked the cables and they seem good. im dropping it off tomorrow at teh stealership. Ill post up when I find out what the issue is. |
Diagnosis: Clutch went. |

That does not sound right... Clutch is clutch when it goes it does not go on a single gear.. It would slip under power. I would go back and raise the:bsflag: flag. Are you paying for this out of pocket? |
2008 79,000 w/motocraft fluid I raised the flag as well. Im getting a second opinion on Monday. They quoted me $2600 for the install. After digging around the internets, this could obviously be a lot of MUCH cheaper problems, fluid, the cables, bushings, the cylinder, and even the TMM and/or RMM. So im picking the car up in a bit and then ill take a closer look at the mounts before i drop it off at the local garage. (if anything visually looks off, ill post some pictures.) Its so bizarre. I would assume that if a clutch failed, it would happen slowly... not instantaneously. And when im sitting still, i can put it in and out of gear with no problems — the same goes for anything under 2500RPM. Its when im moving I cant shift it. I dont think its slipping on just one gear. The issue is that at anything higher than 2500RPM, i basically have to drop-kick it into a gear, any of them. 1 -> 2 nearly impossible. 1 -> 3 is much easier. 3 -> 5 is easier 5-> nearly impossible. Dont get me wrong, they are ALL very difficult to shift into. |
clutch So i got a second opinion and they said that its def the clutch. But $1200 less than the dealer... $1400 installed. Would you guys recommend just getting the OEM replacement or is now a good time to get something else? I dont race, its a daily driver with some aggressive driving for fun... Thoughts? Thanks again for all the feedback. |

My Clutch There's your problem. These should never snap how this did here... I did have a new clutch installed (not from the dealer) and it works, drives, and feels as good as new. http://www.75meters.com/car/01.jpg http://www.75meters.com/car/02.jpg http://www.75meters.com/car/03.jpg http://www.75meters.com/car/04.jpg http://www.75meters.com/car/05.jpg |
