Ebay Oil Catch Can

I'm looking to do an OCC sometime in the near future since I just recently got the CPE catted DP on and I wanna do one as a safeguard and I'm not smoking much right now but I can only imagine I'll smoke more in the future. My next oil change is going to be with 5w40 synthetic.

Now.. I was wonder if it's worth paying the $150 for an OCC kit specifically made for the MS3.. or could I get something like this...

MAZDA MX3 MX-5 MIATA RX7 RX8 UNIVERSAL OIL CATCH CAN BL: eBay Motors (item 180518135698 end time Aug-07-10 14:20:49 PDT)

and just buy more hose for it? I can only imagine the only thing different is that I need to measure and cut my own hose for it and it wouldn't/would come with enough..

Haha. It's very blue.. I guess.. not that one specifically.. I'd want something more neutral but the general idea is there.. Just wondering if getting a cheaper ebay OCC would do the same job as any other OCC for our cars..

IshiKage 07-27-2010 08:06 AM

looks good, except the fact its so...BLUE ha.

id say, pm matt damon. hes the one that put together the OCC kit for MSF. so ask him if he thinks this will work and how does the size of this can compare to the one he uses

also, check the sellers feedback in regards to the OCC and see if people are saying good things about it. if so, id imagine its a stout product. especailly for the price

Stockturbo_Ms3 07-27-2010 08:56 AM

looks like apain in the ass to drain. i would
try to find one with an easier drain.

ms3brendan 07-27-2010 09:02 AM

Yeah. I want to mount it underneath the SRI since there's a good amount of room there so even if a can is crappy to drain, at least removing it wouldn't be hard.

I sent a PM over to Matt Damond. Maybe I'll just get his kit.. or his hose kit..

I did this morning. Haven't heard back from 'em yet.

Trust me, get the Matt Damond kit. I messed with piecing my own shit together, including the compression resistant hoses, cans, and Matt's check valves which are better than slapping another PCV valve in there. Was a PIA. Just get his kit. Worth the few extra bucks.

knarfies 07-27-2010 01:27 PM

is there a site for this? pics? price?

$25 maybe a little cheap but 165 is wow.

ive seen kits for 99-130.

Raider 07-27-2010 01:40 PM

Well, food for thought. What size are the fittings for the catch can? If too small, wont work with the hoses that connect to the PCV system, and you will have to bumble-fuck a setup to work. Most hoses will collapse under too much pressure, giving a CEL. So you need compression-resistant hose. So do what you want, but you might be buying a catch can that will not work.

There is a square can a local guy put on his Speed he got for $40 on ebay. Works fine for him.

Hell, aaronc7 is selling a used catch can setup here, too. Search for it. I bought 1, he had 1 left.

ms3brendan 07-27-2010 01:50 PM

It's true.. $165 is pretty steep but matt damond's kit is really nice.. the mounting point of under the intake is perfect. I'll consider it but I definitely want to look for a cheaper sub-$99 all together option.

Raider 07-27-2010 01:54 PM

$60 for the check valves alone, then add in the hoses, might not be cheaper. Was not for me.

knarfies 07-27-2010 01:58 PM

ya, i cant argue now cuz this doesnt explain how its set up
