egr block off

bought jbr's egr kit and may install it next oil change along with new plugs and seafoam. does anyone regret blocking off his egr?

ak_spray 05-13-2011 02:33 PM

Had this same question in mind. Subbing.

knarfies 05-13-2011 02:34 PM

haha no ones biting, im actually doing mine next weekend along with occ install

wankular 05-13-2011 02:37 PM

I regretted not using silicone to seal it, resulting in 25% fuel trims. Went back to stock but I'm going to re-do it when I get my SURE TB TIG.

shadesofgray19 05-13-2011 02:40 PM

SURE TB TIG?

skeeter149 05-13-2011 02:42 PM

sure throttle body thermal insulating gasket or something close to that. its a insulator to keep block heat off the intake mani iirc. had some on my sr20 worked for me:thinking:

MattJackson86 05-13-2011 02:48 PM

Had my EGR blocked off for who knows how long now (30,000 +). No regrets. Why would there be? No downside to this what so ever except for a CEL. The CEL can be removed with the AP.

mtnrunner 05-13-2011 02:49 PM

I just did mine on wednesday and dont regret it at all. I did it at the same time as my injector seals so it wasnt much extra work at all. Since i have an AP i just turned off the cel in atr and that has worked fine. My valves looked like absolute crap with 66000 miles. I have used sea foam multiple times but not in the last 10k or so. Also i just started running meth about 3k miles ago. I do not have an OCC yet but i will be getting one very soon after seeing my valves. For some reason the valves behind the vcts flaps were the worst.

These pics were taken with a iphone because thats all we had to work with.

No regets, had it blocked off forever now.

amoosenamedhank 05-13-2011 02:57 PM

What are you guys doing to clean the valves (short of WMI) once you get the manifold off? Or are you just accepting dirty valves and rocking them.

We had a full day of swapping my ac compressor, injector seals, tig, egr delete, boost leak test/fix and doing turd's egr delete over, injector seals, and boost leak test. For now we just left the valves looking like crap but i am going to go back in in a few weeks and clean them after i buy a occ. We are just going to put some gas down in there and scrub away on the valves to help clean the crap away then suck up whatever is left in there with a shop vac..

Not looking at them helped me.

karl-hungus 05-13-2011 06:37 PM

my ocd won't like the cel even though i can clear it at will with the scan gauge. this may force me to ditch the ht for the ap.

MattJackson86 05-13-2011 07:38 PM

I thought the same thing until I had it on for the first 5,000+ miles. Now the dash looks odd without it on!

Monotonous ONE 05-13-2011 08:47 PM

i put my my plate and plug on the other day

and have dont see a difference other than the CEL...which ive cleared a few times cause i havent really had time to adjust the map in the AP yet

but i feel better after seeing the SHIT on the inside of the intake mani...i dont even wanna look at the fucking valves...fuck i can only imagine

EDIT: To answer your question...no i dont regret it.

superskaterxes 05-13-2011 08:58 PM

i temporarily regret mine.

failed inspection today because of it so i gotta switch back and go reinspect. then take it right back off haha

YammerR1 05-13-2011 11:26 PM

Makes me wonder if COBB could add an EGR duty cycle table to ATR so we could control the valve to keep it closed? Would be nice to easily re-activate it for inspection... probably would sell a few more AP's too.

Good point. Maybe I should wait until my next smog check before I block it.

karl-hungus 05-16-2011 06:52 PM

i'll do the egr blockoff next oil change (bought some rtv copper). i'll have the tb off and i saw this on su's website but it's complete bullshit, right?

SURE TIG™ for the 2.3L MZR Turbo

Monotonous ONE 05-16-2011 07:01 PM

Pat...did you not see the group buy on those for the past month?

karl-hungus 05-16-2011 07:06 PM

i thought the gb was for the intake plenum tig so i didn't click on thread. there's no way i'm taking my intake mani off for this. the tb tig has me intrigued but i'm thinking it's snake oil. it's been almost 3 years and i'm still sure and cpe free.

Monotonous ONE 05-16-2011 07:09 PM

lol

well its actually cheaper on streetunit anyway...i think...cause of the free shipping

if it makes you feel uncomfortable in the pants...do the coolant bypass...if you have not already

karl-hungus 05-16-2011 07:14 PM

wtf is the coolant bypass? i am so lost right now.

Tokay444 05-16-2011 07:16 PM

There is a coolant line that goes to the TB for whatever reason. My guess is to counter act the intercooler. You can bypass it.

Monotonous ONE 05-16-2011 07:18 PM

for real...does hot ass coolant REALLY need to be going to the throttle body?? wtf

i think its for cooler climates where the flapper could freeze shut

karl-hungus 05-16-2011 07:20 PM

where's the coolant bypass how to?

Monotonous ONE 05-16-2011 07:33 PM

i couldnt find one...atleast not in the ms3/ms6 how-to databases

maybe @bnoon can chime in...he has it done and explained it in shout...but i dont completely remember

i think he said there are 2 lines going to the throttle body...he removed 1 and sent the 1 remaining tube to the location where the other was removed

if that makes sense

Almost all newer throttle bodies run engine coolant through them.

I think that the link you are looking for is here...

karl-hungus 05-16-2011 07:38 PM

it makes sense, but someone should man up by doing a how to and then sell me something.

Transam1998 05-16-2011 10:14 PM

I don't have a how to yet, but am planning to do mine, so I can put one together.

It's pretty easy, the LS1 owners have been doing this forever, I did it to my Firebird.

1.) Only downside is inspection.
2.) Bypassing your coolant line to the TB will make your car run like shit in the cold and/or your TB will freeze. Otherwise, do it.
3.) Has anyone thought of doing a catch-can type thing on the EGR pipe to let it function, but capture the solids?

wildacex187 05-16-2011 10:33 PM

from what i've read it seems that the ap only "turns off" the cel but doesnt get rid of the code. once u go get an inspection or use a scanner it reads "not ready" or something like that and wont pass :(

would like to get this done but annual inspections suck!!

Tokay444 05-17-2011 03:42 AM

Annual would suck. We're bi-annual, and iirc, we only get sniffed, but there could be a scan involved. For the sake of a cleaner IM, I may do this and just slap it back on every two years.
Now if I could only find out where my oil is going...

i miss bio. thank you, ray finkle. will likely not do the coolant bypass nor sure tig snake oil gasket when i plug the egr.

thankfully florida is an inspection free zone but this cel will drive me from the ht to ap someday.

Monotonous ONE 05-17-2011 05:51 AM

florida? vehicle inspections?

LOL

Is this a fact? I thought as long as no CEL's are on that you pass?

Total and absolute bullshit. Been to 30 below the last two winters and no issues whatsoever, ever. :chairshot:

That's correct. Just pull the shorter coolant line all the way off and connect the longer line to the other tube. If you do it quickly, you spill very little coolant. I messed up and dropped the line more than once, so I had to add a couple of quarts of coolant to top it off when I was done.
