A catch can is also needed to help keep the intake clean. The EGR is mostly responsible for buildup on the valves, though.

Even with both a catch can and EGR blockoff, I'd still run Seafoam occasionally. DI engines don't wash down the intake valves like port injection ones do, and are therefore much more susceptible to buildup.

I suppose I wasn't clear, so I'll restate:
I don't want to have to clean every oil change and I also don't want to block off my EGR and get a CEL, so I was assuming an EGR catch-can would be a good compromise (vs. a foolproof solution.)

It would take some manufacturing, but some way to catch the EGR or dump it to the downpipe (or ground?) would work. Not sure if its worth the work for most people.

No, it does actually remove the CEL. Will not show up on a scantool.

I dont have ATR in front of me right now, but its in the advanced properties, just uncheck the CEL code you want to remove.

I ran into the same issue. You get a comm error that throws a cel even if you remove the correct code.

Well all I can say is that I have the AP removing my CEL and the DH will not pick up any codes what so ever. Works perfectly for me. Cobb did report a comm error for some people though not sure if thats fixed or what.

This isn't true. I don't have it done to my car, but you can deactivate any check engine light code you want with the correct tuning software. What you cannot do, however, is force the OBDII flags to set for emissions. You have flags for all kinds of different emissions systems like secondary air, o2 sensors, EGR, PCV, etc. What your thinking of is when you take your car to get smogged, they check for a check engine light, how many faults are in the engine system, and for how many OBDII monitors or flags are unset. By blocking off the EGR, you can clear the code and check engine light with ATR, but you cannot change the fact that the EGR OBDII monitor will never set. Here in Nevada, you are allowed 1 unset monitor or 1 fault with no check engine light on... so if this is your only mod that messes with your monitors, you will be fine.

Happened to me. I talked with cobb about it. Said some cars experience a cel even after deleting the code. The code i deleted wasnt throwing, but a communications code still popped up. You guys can sit here and tell me a code wont throw if you delete it in ATR all day long, but i spent over a month going back and forth with cobb and plenty of time in this forum to find out that there is jack shit that you can do about it. So far at least...

Best i can say for the guys wanting to do this, do so expecting to throw a code. If it doesent happen, awesome.

Sorry for the noob question here but whats the AP and the CEL that everyone keeps mentioning.

I just got an 08 Speed3 with 35k & am thinking of some minor tweeks, the EGR block off being one of them.

Just to update, the newer versions of ATR alow the code to properly be removed, without a CEL.

Since someone brought this back from the dead. Who has noticed higher coolant temps with a deleted EGR? I'm just thinking if I go FM that if I do the EGR delete also that's only going to make the coolant temps even higher if what little info I have is true.

Havent checked that, i assume that would still be there, however, the light can be removed and will stay gone from the issue.

I want to say my coolant temps stays around 180, and was the same before i did the delete months ago.

Wonder if any vendor will make a filter for the EGR. Did a quick google search and see that a lot of the diesel engines in Mercedes, Landrovers, etc have EGR filters not to mention VW Beetles. Looks like its as simple as changing an air filter.

That way the emissions systems stay intact and you keep the bad shit out of your intake track. Just thinking out loud.
