Engine cut off

In the past 3 days, my engine has shut off twice while I was driving. One happened at low RPMs after the switch to 2nd, the other happened after I put my foot on the clutch to go from 3rd down to 2nd to make a turn. When the engine cuts I lose steering so I almost got into an accident because I couldn't make the turn. I didn't get into boost at any time during the drives as I had barely left my house.

I have no clue why. Last oil change I was told I burned a bit of oil but I checked the level and it is fine, maybe a little over filled. I use penzoil plat synthetic, and have 25k miles. Mods are cobb intake, turbosmart bov, and CS DP. It would be a pain to go back to stock for a dealer visit so any input is greatly appreciated.

well from what ive heard unless tuned our cars don't do well with VTA

chrisB 04-21-2010 02:05 PM

But that's not gonna cause the car to shut off

VTA Could cause your car to stall, The MAF will not see the right mixture and you will run super rich and the car will flood, I use to see this all the time will DSM's.Same thing VTA was very bad for the cars drivability. Cars would stall coming to stops while stepping on the clutch, Messes with the ECU big time, Run a Recirt tube and I bet it goes away.

oh wow big NEGATIVE on that. i have a bunch of bolt-ons including a big turbo and VTA... UNTUNED. don't listen to him VTA has nothing to do with it, in fact change your perspective as well about VTA coz my car is running and shifting SMOOTHLY. 0 problems.

I had the same problem one day. I was driving the car from my house to a local store and the car got to the store ok but when i got out of the store which i was in for about 2min i turned the car on and it started and then turned off on me. So i turned the car on again i took off and it stalled on me, so to make a long story short i took it in for a tech to take a look at it and it came out to be an ecu problem so ever since the new ecu i haven't had a problem. Hope this helps

then why does everyone say to run recirc and not VTA? you see that vid with the fireball shooting out the exhaust from running VTA? im just saying the general consensus of the forum seems to be VTA is not good

seems to me you are doing your research... so what exactly happens if i run VTA and not have a tune? am i going to blow up???

H3llfir3 04-22-2010 11:39 AM

You will NOT blow up running VTA.

With our cars, all that VTA does is cause backfiring and small fluxuations in idle.

snailD 04-22-2010 12:01 PM

yeah i didnt say anyone was going to blow up. ^ that occurs, so i was just trying to see if that would cause the OP's issues from anyone else on here with more information. so since that is ruled out i have no idea. good luck
