Default Gear-like noise at Idle, stops when clutch is pressed

I have an 09' MS3 at 24k miles. When the car sits at idle, I hear gear-like chatter, but as soon as I press the clutch in, the chatter goes away. Is this normal?

I would guess you didn't buy the car new?

could be the TO bearing or that is what a single mass flywheel will sound like. OE uses a dual mass wheel which masks the gear noise in the tranny.

perfectly normal if the flywheel has been replaced.

could be an aftermarket TMM as well. they make all the noise in the tranny audible.

mine's noisy as fook, but when i push the clutch... silence.

I have a TRZ Transmission mount, and I get the noise clutch out too Goes away when depressed. It is probably got a mount installed. If not, TOB.

It is not the throwout bearing, it is the transmission. Essentially all manual transmissions are consant mesh which means that all gears are "engaged" all the time. When you release the clutch, it is spinning all the gears in the transmission and you can hear them.

This is perectly normal and all manual trans cars will do this.

There is no load on the TOB when the clutch pedal is released. It would make more noise when the pedal is depressed.

THIS. The gears on the input are always touching the gears on the output shaft, so there will be gear noise with the clutch pedal released. Simple as that. A bad TOB will make a noise like ball bearings bouncing around inside of the trans. Ask me how I know...
