Guess its that time...

Well, was driving home about 2 weeks ago; turned onto my street and nailed it in second, shifted to third when the car loaded up and backfired HARD. I let off the gas and hear a strong knock and the dreaded vibration in my clutch pedal. At this point I know this isn't good, I drove her the rest of the way home (about a mile). Turned the car off and had it towed to my Dads house as he has a garage since I live in a condo.

At first the knock had me thinking that I had spun a rod bearing, so today I pull the oil filter and check for shavings; nothing. I then run a magnet through the oil I drained; nothing. Feeling anxious I then pull the oil pan to see if anything is chilling in the bottom of the oil pan; nothing. Well shit, let me check the rods for bends; voila! As you can see in the pics below cylinder #4 rod is definitely bent, the others looked fine from what I could see.

Question for you guys, could the rod being so uncentered on the wrist pin cause the knock I was hearing?

Either way I will be pulling the motor soon and having Precision Crankshaft do the machining and full assembly of the motor.

Enjoy my fail below!

Thanks

Your bisch has some purdy curves.

Yeah, rebuild is in order. Good luck.

were you running ots map or pro tune?

Jtaylor 02-07-2015 05:50 PM

I was tuned by @rfinkle2; when he was with Freektune. Car had 134k on it, I guess shit happens. Also was not under 3k when the car loaded up.

Bump for my question, not that it really matters at this point but I would like to know.

I'm not sure, but I assume that "the rod being so uncentered on the wrist pin cause the knock I was hearing?" was caused by the rod bending, not the reverse. The knock could be it moving around now though.

Sound like this?

Mine was just like yours..no shavings...just a knock/tick. Bent rod. I use it for a paper weight and a close reminder of how quickly shit can tear up when being dumb.

Jtaylor 02-09-2015 05:29 PM

@NCspecV81; that is identical to what mine sounded like. However you are braver than I for leaving it running to shoot a video!

Thanks for your help

Lever a big bar against the rod/cylinder wall and straighten the fucker back up and will be all good J/K..
There will be a shortage of gasket kits soon with a lot of us all over the planet currently doing builds.
