Has anyone ordered a 2.3 motor from Mazdaspeed before?

Hey guys. I've got an MS6 w/ 142k miles on the clock and want to buy a spare motor using my Mazdaspeed discount. The part number is;

ENGINE,PARTIAL
Part No : L3M6-02-300M

It's listed for $3099.93 + freight.

I was just curious if anyone else has bought a spare motor before and if it's really the long block or what it completely entails. Thanks in advance.

-back story- I don't have any problems with my motor, turbo or clutch and everything is running very well. I just want a spare on the engine stand for when it does die. I've got a spare K04 with less than 5k miles on it and don't need anymore power than the stocker can give me. I'm more into corners and suspension mods anyway. I will do the swap myself, I've done a few now.

Evan, call them or call and ask for Mark @ Montrose Mazda, he is the lead tech and has extensive knowledge of the motor and used to own a Speed 6. I think it is only the block...the comlplete motor shipped is close to $10K IIRC.

Lewis7789 05-09-2013 09:46 AM

Thanks Marlon. But I want to do my own research before I call Mazda and order the motor. And from my understanding, Mazdaspeed Motorsports and Mazda dealerships do not work together at all. They are seperate units. ???

I think you are off a bit marlon...lol. When ryan blew his motor it was around 8k for the motor installed with labor included. Thtat is certainly not discounted either.
@silvapain; didnt you go this route through mazdaspeed motorsports?

6Y MAZDA 05-09-2013 09:49 AM

MZRevolved? Stage I Short Block | Custom Performance Engineering

Another option.

Lewis7789 05-09-2013 09:52 AM

But I'm not going high boost or bigger than the factory turbo. A built block isn't necessary for my application.

Thanks though.

jracer 05-09-2013 10:08 AM

onlinemazdaparts will ship you a long block for $3400... bolt on you accessories / manifolds ect..

Dealerships go through them for parts as well, as they have access to the all of the parts wharehouses. Although the mainly deal with racers, etc, the do assist the dealers as well.

Tubescorcher 05-09-2013 10:16 AM

I just got a Long Block for $3250. Bolt it up and your good! Mine even came with the spark plugs. You'll just need new gaskets for what your bolting up. And Coolant and oil obviously! ;)

Lewis7789 05-09-2013 10:22 AM

I'm only seeing short blocks from OnlineMazdaparts.com. And I checked the MS3 sections too. Maybe I'm missing something?

Do you guys have a link to a complete longblock?

Marlon, you probably have a hook up at Mazda. But this applies to the rest of us. Haha

"As a Team Support Member, can I buy my competition parts through a Mazda Dealer?

No. Mazda Competition parts are only available through MAZDASPEED MOTORSPORTS. Our Mazda dealerships do not participate in our racing support program. Discounted stock parts are also NOT available through the dealers. We do not have any "Authorized Competition Parts Dealers"."

I was going of a quote that Pablo got a few years ago when he blew his motor, which was in 2009 I think!

daafisch 05-09-2013 10:26 AM

I think @phate; also went this route.

phate 05-09-2013 10:29 AM

@Dano; went this route, but put in aftermarket rods.

I picked one up for a different car, the part # you have is what I used.

Lewis7789 05-09-2013 10:32 AM

phate, was it a long block? I can swap over all the accessories no problem. But it would be great to have a complete Mazda built/spec'ed 0 miles long block I can have ready to swap in on a weekend.

phate 05-09-2013 10:35 AM

Yes, that's the long block. Check out Dano's build thread, part deux.

StayBroke 05-09-2013 10:37 AM

@mzr0818; also went this route. It is a long block, just bolt on the accessories, exhaust mani, turbo, injectors, intake manifold and thats it.

Also really pretty when you get it lol.

Lewis7789 05-09-2013 10:38 AM

Brilliant, thank you all very much.

boostdmazda3 05-09-2013 10:40 AM

I recently looked into a new motor from mazda for my friend that blew his up....its 4,100 but with my employee pricing its 3,400.

Dano 05-09-2013 10:45 AM

I am not a member of any car club nor MSM of course but do get shop pricing from my local mazda dealer so the math worked out close to a wash of getting it from Mazda vs joining the clubs and posting up two race result + shipping costs from a MSM vendor.

my shop price for the LB was $4,134.91 to be exact free shipping. There is only one LB P/N and be aware that it comes with Gen1 pistons. AFAIK you can't get a LB with Gen2 pistons. This is very disappointing for sure. @superskaterxes; and @SPEED6 KILLAH; hooked me up with an even trade gen2 for my gencrap...ur I mean gen1 pistons.

The LB does however have a gen2 VC which sucks for me but that's another story. I like the red ano Mazdaspeed cap from my genwan.

Edit: BTW I used the PN that phate gave me. L3M6-02-300M which is also listed on the invoice.

SPEED6 KILLAH 05-09-2013 02:27 PM

I have a red speed cap pm me

MoKaP 05-09-2013 03:50 PM

list on the motor is 4134.91 dead cost no backside money involved is 3099.93
employee cost typically 10% is 3408.90 my online price minus shipping is 3564.92

your list you were told may be off don't know many dealers that want to order a motor in for no profit.

you ordered this PN and the invoice shows this PN?? How did you confirm they are gen2 pistons? @mzr0818;

L3M6-02-300M

if so then Mazda needs to get their heads out of their asses and if they superseed a PN then tell us and stop shipping the old unit.

fuckers...lol

As lex pointed out if you order a gen1 you need to get a gen1 due to ECU calibration differences that are likely realated to piston design. This for dealer use of course not our purposes. But if that's the case they need two different PNs.

Ziggo 05-09-2013 06:34 PM

Revision changes FTW.

I got fucked over recently because an engineer changed the design/routing on a molded cable with a revision change, no part number change. The new revision wouldn't fit on my system so I got to go dig thru stock and sit on all the old revision parts to use while I redesigned some bracing.

Did you give them your VIN when you ordered?

Zigatapatalka

Dano 05-09-2013 08:48 PM

no I got the PN from clint and gave it to them. They would have no way to know I had a gen1. I have always had the PN to give them.

this is of interest to me as I got fucked and want to know why it is apparently not consistent.

@phate; @silvapain; did you guys get a LB or just a bare block?

That's the p/n I used and I pulled the plugs and used a bore scope...

Both. Long block was a different project. I pulled the plugs and could have sworn the ridge of the dish was visible...but can't guarantee it at this point.

Lewis7789 05-10-2013 11:51 AM

Forgive my newbness, but what's the difference between piston generations?

StayBroke 05-10-2013 12:46 PM

Gen 2 has pu in the piston, where pu came from.

sent to you from me

Dano 05-10-2013 01:25 PM

Gen 2 pistons are dished to direct the fuel spray back up into the cylinder instead of right across the piston top.

This promotes better atomization of the air fuel mix as well as prevents wall wash of the cylinders which removes oil and adds friction/heat to the pistons.

breakfasteatre 05-10-2013 01:26 PM

i didnt read the thread thoroughly, but when i spoke to mazdaspeed a couple weeks ago, there were two part numbers for short blocks, based on build date, but only one long block part number. That the guy could find at least

Mazdazilla6 05-10-2013 01:36 PM

I ordered a new longblock from Mazda about 6 months ago. Price was $4100 ish as previously stated IIRC.

But now I need to find a bore scope to check the pistons as I'm quite curious as to which gen they are.

breakfasteatre 05-10-2013 01:46 PM

ENGINE,SHORT
Part No : L3ZE-02-200
$2,401.20
$1,800.00

pretty sure this is the genpoo shortblock, includes internals

Lewis7789 05-13-2013 10:30 AM

Well, just ordered my longblock part number L3M6-02-300M from Mazdaspeed Motorsports. I'll post pics and piston info when I receive the motor.

Thanks again for the info, guys.

Got a call from UPS Freight today that it's at their local hub and I scheduled it for delivery tomorrow to my work. We have a dock/fork lift so I'm not sure if there would be additional charges for home delivery, as there usually is when shipping a motor.

Total:1
ENGINE,PARTIAL
Part No : L3M6-02-300M
UPS Ground
The regular price is $4,134.91
The sale price is $3,099.93 $3,099.93
Estimated SubTotal $3,099.93
Tax: $201.50
Shipping: $259.81
Estimated Total $3,561.24

This was my total invoice paid. Looking forward to receiving it tomorrow.

ps- etipp, stay out of my Mazdaspeed account. haha
