Help: Advice with news from garage. Ok so the garage just got back to me and is about to pull the engine out to get into what is going on. Said the turbo is where the coolant is getting burnt up, so wondering if anyone out there has one or would it be best just to get it rebuilt? Next, apparently the alternator is overcharging and burning up the wire coming off of it, possibly the problem with my starter going. Engine: well the engine had previous work done, wiseco pistons sleeves, etc. It is burning a lot of oil, so not sure what he did when it comes to the rings, but looks like they might be bad. Also, the guy said there is something going on with the head, noise coming from cams or valves not real sure. Do these engine normally have the valve clatter or the VVT go bad? Would like some advice on the best route with this? I only have about $3k to spend, after already buying the cometic head gasket, arp head bolts, other gaskets, gauges, starter, etc. |
You're screwed. *EDIT* sorry that sounds kinda mean.. but yeh.. this is why I don't buy used modified cars! |
These engines make a lot of racket, even at idle. From solid buckets to hard hitting direct injectors, you can't avoid noise. As for the engine, well, it probably would have been a good idea to take the car to a mechanic you trust before buying. It's been my experience that people sell high performance modified cars to get out of a quickly expanding hole. |
to answer your question: yes, the vvt and/or timing chain and tensioner have been known to go. rattle on start up/quiet at idle is a bad vvt, rattle at idle is timing chain stretching or tensioner taking a poop. |
appreciate the comments. Well the biggest thing was the antifreeze and thinking it was the head gasket. I am going to rebuild the turbo soon as i get the rebuild kit. Only other main issue will be that i am pretty sure the rings are gone. So going to go one step at a time and see what i can do. Hope to get into the engine myself and see what is actually in there. Will def start with the vvt and check the timing chain and tensioner. |
