HELP!? PLEASE no dealership visit. WTF is this sound?

I raced a corvette tonight and shit on it. After the race, I started to notice a strange sound from my car. It is coming from the pasenger side in the engine compartment. These videos are from my cel phone, but they captured the sound. I can't tell exactly where its coming from... but I drove home, and was unsure if I should've done that. I have an extended warranty but am unsure if it will be an easy fix or require a dealership visit.

This is the noise sitting at idle....

This is the noise when I rev the engine slightly...

This is the noise from inside the engine bay. harder to hear, but from the passenger side where the noise originates from...

karl-hungus 03-07-2011 08:19 PM

fuel pump clatter?

Fatguy729 03-07-2011 08:22 PM

fuel pump is having no problems with psi and the sound is coming from the passenger side,,,,

karl-hungus 03-07-2011 08:25 PM

you can have normal psi but still get a clatter.

cbspeed3 03-07-2011 08:44 PM

Timing chain???

GTISPEED3 03-07-2011 08:52 PM

that sounds all kinda good. subbd for source and solution

m4tic 03-07-2011 08:59 PM

rod?

http://www.mazdaspeedforums.org/foru...ns-rods-58929/

Fatguy729 03-07-2011 09:00 PM

I of course have not gone WOT but I am not getting any KR on the ap. No clutch vibration. This leads me to believe no bent rod.. Is this a safe assumption?

I'm gonna have to agree with you. It sounds weird but it really does sound like the timing chain.

Definitely gonna have to take it to Mazda. It's something bad.

Z-Indy 03-07-2011 09:11 PM

Shit man. That sucks. Sounds like a moped in the 2nd vid.

I wish I had an answer, but I have no clue.

Fatguy729 03-07-2011 09:15 PM

Should i risk the 45 mile trip to the nearest dealership? Or Have the roadside assistance tow it there?

sLow6 03-07-2011 09:19 PM

Depends on your warranty. If I were you though I would get the car back to stock. Or a's close a's you can. If there is really something wrong within the motor. They are gonna try to blame you for it. At least that's what the dealer around me always does. I would get a tow. That's a long haul. You don't know what's wrong with it. Better safe than sorry.

easy 03-08-2011 01:23 AM

sounds like chain slap .. can you feel it on your valve cover?

if it turn out that it is ... you can buy chain, vvt actuator, washer, tensioner, and guide for around $227 shipped at mazda-parts if u decide not to go to the dealer

oh10speed3 03-08-2011 01:31 AM

yeah that 2nd video sounds all kinds of nasty.

jozi-111 03-08-2011 02:01 AM

Try to turn your ac off and listen again if you hear that noise. It could be serpentine belt pulley or tensioner...

Fatguy729 03-08-2011 05:27 AM

So assuming its something that's mentioned above, should i try to drive it to the stealership? It seemed to drive fine, but I'm unsure if it will fuck more stuff up driving it.

superskaterxes 03-08-2011 05:43 AM

sounds like a spun bearing or rod knock to me. i would stock out 100% and TOW that shit to the dealer. DONT start your car again, because you may regret it.

Z-Indy 03-08-2011 05:45 AM

I was thinking about this on the drive to work today, and my thought was, maybe you should take it to some local shop (not dealership). Have them diagnose the issue. If it's something major (bent rod or something) then have them tow it back to your house, stock-out, and then tow to dealership for warranty work.

If the shop says it is something small, have them just fix it, and consider the cost offset by the fact that you didn't have to take off all your mods and then put them back on.

easy 03-08-2011 05:47 AM

Mazda has free roadside assistance if i remember.

Yup thats what mine sounded like but I only heard it on idle w/ the AC on.

Mazda calls it drive belt tensioner.

pipe 03-08-2011 06:00 AM

after hearing it a second time, it sounds more like rod knock.
put it back to stock and call mazda roadside assistance. DON'T DRIVE THE CAR ANYMORE!

SIXual Panda 03-08-2011 06:05 AM

i would just take your valve cover off and see if there are 2 grooves where your chain is. and you can just feel the tension of your timing chain. that is my guess to what it is. my timing chain tensioner just went bad also.

and yeah, seeing that you dont have TOO much stuff to stock out to, if you still have your stock parts, i would stock out and go to the dealer.

Fatguy729 03-08-2011 06:22 AM

If it was a Rod knocking, wouldn't i have seen KR on the ap? I watched kr all the way home and saw none

easy 03-08-2011 06:29 AM

yea i think if it was rod knock .. the knock sensor would have picked it up and would retard it so much you wouldn't have any power or would run shitty.

like mentioned above i would remove valve cover and see if chain has slack. Or try and pin-point the sound exactly where its coming from and hopefully its not coming from the bottom-end

Fatguy729 03-08-2011 06:53 AM

I'll look at the chain... Looks like a fun day of stocking my car out! :disappointed:

Raider 03-08-2011 06:59 AM

Look into the serpentine belt tensioner. It is known to be crap, but $20 at NAPA. There is a thread around here about it.

Fatguy729 03-08-2011 07:06 AM

Smoking a phat bowl before i start dismantling this fucker... By myself!

faeker 03-08-2011 07:33 AM

That's almost exactly what my WRX sounded like when I fucked up a rod bearing. GL to you man.

expert here
here is my journey on this same issue
http://www.mazdaspeedforums.org/foru...t-cured-64606/

cliff notes:
replaced tensioner pulley wheel- not cured
replaced idler pulley wheel - not cured
stocked, including old pulley wheels, out went to dealer
dealer replaced ENTIRE tensioner pulley - problem solved

from what i learned reading about the issue on other forums is that even though there is play in the bearings of the pulley wheels they are NOT the cause of the rattle....dealer stated it was an issue with the spring tension in the pulley assembly itself and they are a known weak item. You can buy an entire pulley assembly yourself...or have the dealer do it for free....it is your call

edit:...your's sounds slightly different in that it stays steady with gas application...hmmm not sure now...but that is my info for ya anyway haha...interested in hearing the results from the dealer

easy 03-08-2011 01:43 PM

you can remove the drive belt and start the car ... if it still makes the noise then its not any of the pulleys or belt tensioner.

Fatguy729 03-08-2011 02:49 PM

Well just got done minus uninstallIng the ap and putting the tmic plumbing back on the hood. Fucked up a bumper clip like a tard so now my bumper is fucked... Z indy helped me out THANK YOU. Will post a few pics

H3R3TIC 03-08-2011 03:57 PM

I had a bad idler tensioner replaced under warranty, and though the location of the sound is spot on, it did not sound like that. It also only occurred with very slight load on the engine (a quick rev or turning the wheel when idling) and then it went away almost instantly (I almost couldn't replicate it after stocking out and making my dealership trip).

I'm no expert at diagnosing sounds by any means, but this seems like something different to me. Maybe mine just wasn't as far gone though.

From another thread to fix your bumper, btw was the timing chain loose?

Also this is the thread

laxplayermjd 03-08-2011 07:15 PM

i woulda removed serpentine belt first then start the car. if noise is gone replace complete belt tensioner. fairly easy to test yourself before swapping all the stock stuff back on

In that diagram, the piece that would need to be replaced is #1.

The broken piece is the little flange at the tip of the side of the bumper that bullets in to hold the bumper into the fender ( maybe not a good description). But anyway, it's part of the bumper itself. He's gonna have to use something to recreate that loop that the bolt went through. (I suggested maybe super gluing a washer on there).

Well here are some pics from the stock out.... Once again, Thanks to Z Indy for the help... Things were alot easier coming off than going on. I think I could go back to my original setup in 2-3 hours.... maybe LOL. My back hurts, that shit sucked, after 5-6 hours of that bullshit i'm done for now. Still need to uninstall the AP and put the TMIC hood plumbing back. Oh and find a replacement crank case hose cuz the aftermarket is too short, and the OEM Won't fit cuz I cannot find the OEM clip that holds it on to the valve case breather. Unfortunaely I was missing some very insignificant (til now) bolts/screws that held some of the OEM plastic bullshit.... And we had to NATRORIZE some shit, but hopefully it will pass.

I'm just worried about uninstalling the AP/ Reflashing with zero miles on the tune for Mazda to look at... Hopefully all will be good....

This is the first pic/Last pic with my mods on... before dismantling and after the bumper removal..
