HELP! Smoking after doing vent recall.

I own an 07 Mazda Speed 3. Mods include - Cork Sport Exhaust, CP-E Xcel Intake, and Saikou Michi Oil Catch Can.

Had it smoking at idle after the vehicle is warm. I finished doing the TSB but I ran into a few problems. I am a Cadillac Mechanic (for 2 years now) and bought this car on a trade in to my dealer with 80,000 miles. It smoked when I bought it but after some research I noticed that there was a fix. I have none of the stock parts to even switch to.

I replaced the valve cover this morning. After driving the car to the gas station (10 minutes from my job) I noticed after a minute or two that the smoke started again. The problem is that the CP-E Intake uses a metal air intake tube and the kit contains a flat plastic one. I am still using my old Intake tube (metal) and the old PCV tube the goes from the valve cover all the way up right next to the MAF sensor. Did anyone else keep their old Intake tube or did they replace it? And if you stocked your car out to get it done at the dealer, what aftermarket parts did you reinstall after?

Im wondering if the rerouted location of the pcv tube from the valve cover is really the fix here rather than just the valve cover replacement (like i originally thought).

Heres a pic of the intake:

Any help is appreciated.

Unfortunately the smoking is from the seals on the turbo. Mazdas fix was to replace it.

The flat plastic part of the intake is called a TIP(turbo inlet pipe). The redesigned TIP was most likely put it place to pull a slightly different vacuum on the crankcase. IDK if most ppl who have had this preformed at the dealer put back on their TIPs, but I'm sure someone has connected back into the intake port near the MAF.

If the car was smoking before you purchased it, they turbo seals may in fact be shot, and the only real remedy is going to be a rebuilt/new turbo.

Try these steps to see if the car still is smoking:
1. Install the redesigned TIP, connect hose to valve cover port.
2. Make sure to empty the OCC.
3. Change the oil to a slightly thicker weight... Shell Rotella T6 5W-40 is highly recommended.
4. Drive around for a few miles, to burn off any possible left over oil in the exhaust system.

If you do all that, and the car still smokes, I've got my money on the turbo seals being shot.

Going to be trying this tommorow..picked up Mpbil-1 5w-40 diesel oil (we didnt have rotella at the shop)..hopefully it doesnt smoke!

If the seals are already gone, no band-aids will help at this point.

uh i hate when people mistake the valve cover vent for pcv.

? What?

Turbo is toast. Go VIP, access the fs section, scor a good used one for $125 or so.

you said this:

"and the old PCV tube the goes from the valve cover all the way up right next to the MAF sensor"

that has nothing to do with the PCV

Anyway...I installed the entire vent kit...then changed the oil with 5w-40 Mobil 1 synthetic diesel oil... idled for 15 minutes in the shop no smoke..then started to puff a bit. I figured Id pull it out and take it for a ride around the block. From my lift to the road..SMOKESCREEN. Anyway it cleared up as I left my shop parking lot. I took it around the block and came back. It sat outside and didnt smoke for about 20 minutes and then started smoking again like normal. Took it home and about 6 minutes after I sat idling..it started pouring out blue smoke again.

So since I can get to the turbo..is there a rebuild kit from Mazda for it?

Just wish it was fixed...:banghead:

no rebuild its from mazda..
just buy a used turbo in the VIP section..

There is a rebuild kit made by gpop shop. I remember someone on here had good results from it and has a tread about it. Just do a search.

Am I the only one who got the letter from Mazda Norte Americano entited: Heavy White Smoke Warranty Extension Program SSP 86" covering Gen1's? There also is a "VVT Noise SSP 87" sheet, too.

They're covering both TSBs as Recalls it looks like and are extending the warranties 7/70 on both items.

Might be worth looking into.

Check out the sticky in the general section.

Buy my EWG manifold and throw a gt/x30 on there.

900rpm idle will help

JMSports 04-22-2012 07:56 PM

Just found out this turbo isn't the original...it was replaced under warranty at 44k..

Really not looking foward to replacing it as it only has 40 thousand miles on this turbo...plus I am not looking on having to buy a tuner (which I should have but dont) or having to upgrade the fuel pump or the injectors...

Oh and by the way the turbo didn't look that bad..doesn't look like alot of oil in the exhaust side of the turbo...although the intake side had a slight spray of oil and the pipe from the intercooler was similarly wet with oil

Heres my turbo laying on the bench:

Just got off the phone with Mazda and they said they would give me the turbo, the oil feed pipe, and all the gaskets, studs and nuts for 1178.00

The turbo part number off the one in the car is an old number and the guy tells me that its been updated since this 2nd turbo was installed. Also comes with a year warranty i guess. Any thoughts on this or anywhere I can get an aftermarket turbo for about the same price?

you can get used k04 here for less than $200. become VIP and check the for sale section. also, a company called bnr does k04 rebuilds. their rebuilt k04 is $900 :bnrsupercars.com

i'd go with either of those rather than a new k04 from mazda..

bova 05-03-2012 09:51 AM

so you say you did the vent fix but didn't bother to change turbo inlet pipe putting the valve cover vent hose closer to the turbo? well that was the whole point of the fix, if you didn't do that you might as well not have done it, you did nothing to change crankcase pressure. maybe i missed a post where you said you did but as far as I can tell all you did was replace the valve cover.

instead of paying all that for another stock turbo, just buy an AP, increase your idle, use 5w40 and call it a day.

JMSports 05-07-2012 01:35 PM

I ended up switching the TIP with the new redesigned one, and it made no difference.

I called G-Pop Shop and they said they would do a rebuild for 350...worst comes to worst they would send me a rebuilt one if mine was beyond repair...Anyone else use g-Pop shop for a rebuild?...ive read many success stories on other types of vehicles...

JMSports 05-17-2012 05:32 PM

G-Pop shop told me there was nothing wrong with my turbo...shaft play was within spec and there was no damage to the housing or the seals...so thanks to everyone who told me that the turbo is garbage...:ugh1:

Anyway...guess ill have to get the bnoon bolt and the accessport..one quick question...is the accessport reusable? Like could i buy one used?

mattsmzr3 05-29-2012 08:07 PM

yes you can buy a used one
