HKS bov help

Im new to this site and looking for some advice. My friend has a MS3 and we were installing a HKS bov on it today. So here are a few questions I have.
1. Will it only whistle with the fin in?
2. Is it bad to not recirculate?
3. We couldn't get this thing to make any noise, what did we do wrong?
4. If you hook it up to vta what do you do with the recirculate hose?
My last car was a SRT-4 and I had the rfl bov so I was used to a loud whoosh. This is my friends first mods to his car and he's paranoid things are gonna go wrong. Pics will help also. He wants to send it back but I know this is a good bov and im trying to get this taken care of. Off topic I was wondering how well these cars take to mods.

i had one so i will help all i can....

1. yes for the bird like whistle you need to use the insert in vta. with it in recirc it sounds kinda like another bpv, but is still distinct.
2. this car accounts for the air to be dumped back in the intake so if you vent it you will run rich between shifts, because the car is giving the fuel to match the air that you would not be delivering in vent to atmosphere. it can be dialed or tuned out but that takes ems tuning. if you went vta you plug the hose, or get a cap for the inlet. i ran vta for a good 10 mins with my greddy rs. sounded sweet but i hated the jerk and the way it was at shifts went back to recirc....
3. the only thing i can come up with for absolutely no noise is a incorrect install, or stock airbox. i lean toward he has the stock air box, meaning no intake. does he have a aftermarket intake?
4. again put a plug in the hose or cap the inlet where the hose connects...

it is a great bpv valve but i would get the recirc fitting and recirc it. but like i said the stock air box does a amazing job of muffling the turbo and the bpv/bov so if he wants any noise and has the stocker box gotta go:). hope i helped search for pics and take care.:smirk:

He does have the stock air box. He also has the recirc fitting. After a quick drive to see what it sounded like we did notice the vac line got roughed up from the hood, so Im hoping that had to do with the lack of sound. So are you saying no bov will sound good on this car if you recirc? Im gonna have him drive it hooked up both ways and see if he can tell a diff. We tried pulling a real tight vac line off the bov and the skinny metal piece pulled out with it. We stuck it back in very snug. Would that ruin the bov? And lastly, with everything hooked up correctly and using the recirc hose, should you be able to hear any noise through that hose just reving the motor? We didn't get much. Like I said before, he still has the stock air box.

well all the recirc'd valves have a noise. the forge being the most distinct metal clanging. the hks has a nice one but not half as nice as when it is vta lol. i just dont recommend vta on this car. any bpv will have a sound, its up to you guys to decide what noise you like,so you will here something. but the airbox has gotta go. with a intake you can even hear the stocker(barely mind you but that box muffles it all up). but anyway the stock airbox has a funny way of muffling any valve that is recirced that i have heard(havent heard a vta with stock box). so if he gets a intake the recirc will be much more audible then with the box. as for the vac line on back coming off havent had that but as long as it doesnt leak you will be ok. again. wow i never ran the hks with the stock air box so i dont know what it would sound like. when i just rev in the driveway i only build like 5 psi so i imagine it wouldnt be too loud, and the box is muffling it to nothing.

^^Yep, what they said.. The first mod should have been the CAI, SRI whatever you like. Just with an intake, you can hear the stock BPV very clearly. That stock Air box is a giant piece of shit.

Get the intake, and you will be whooshing your ass off...

i wonder if someone found a way to have those fins work with recirc it would make the same noise yet you would be recirculating the air.
