Default How much higher will I be able to set the rev limit

1. with forged rods and OEM gen2 pistons;
2. with forged rods and forged pistons (this may be also a question of which rods/pistons, so please go as deep into detail as you can)

...considering that I'm going to have an aftermarket VVT actuator (DCR) as well?

I would think its dependent on each engine and turbo. Subbed.

Rev limit is more dependent on valvetrain in this car. Erich revs to 7500 daily on stock valvetrain, however.
I feel safer at 7krpm.

The bore to stroke is what determines the piston speed. You can do all the head work you want, but that has nothing to do with the bottom end.

Destroke the motor w/ a 2.0 MZR 09+ forged crank & get some custom rods made... rev to 8500+. You will lose some torque, but have a more usable powerband.

The main thing to over come here, if its even possible is allowing the ecu to calculate past 7500 rpm. Erich's tuner attempted higher than 7500rpm with poor results if my memory doesn't fail me.

@Erich
I believe COBB has overcome the limitation, but yes the ECU took a crap around 7750 when we tried. Car still revved out to 8000 but wasn't making power past 7750.

So you guys say that with the stock valve train and stock bore/stroke pistons/rods I could easily rev up to like 7k, is that correct?

I don't intend to go past 7200 anyway, since the car is a DD and not a project car I'd still like to stay with the same cam shafts and piston/rod specs.

I'm using versatuner for ECU tuning and the latest versions have support for up to like 8k rpm on the tables that matter. Of course the RPM resolution is lower to make sure the data arrays fit into memory. As far as I know no one tried to tune the car with VT and rev much higher than stock, but around 7k rpm it should work.

Thank you!

I have been revving the stock valve train (upgraded cams) to 7250-7500 for 12 months with out issue. You can cam the car and still DD, direct inject seems to negate some of the issues with upgraded cams.

I really hope I can make it out to WA someday before you sell the speed.

I will hold you at gun point to sit in that mofucka

well, 7.2k on the tach is 6.88-6.9k. I could rev up to that even now I guess...

Not what I would do.
Plenty of stroker 2.4L 4G63 engines reving to 8000+
All you need are stiffer valve springs with our engine. I would not destroke it unless you want to rev to something in the 10k range.

I know this is kind of old, but now that cams are available and tuning solutions allow tuning above the stock rev limiter, has anyone else tried this? Any reason (besides baby turbo) that no one is doing it?

I have had my rev limiter set anywhere from 7200-7500 for over a year and half and 13000 miles (tried over 7800 while tuning on the dyno, but the ECU didn't like it.) This is on upgraded cams, but stock valve train.

I have my rev limit upped to 7K on my new engine, but I'm still on the K04 for now so it's useless.

Correct. PTP cams and VVT, everything else in valve train is stock.

The valvetrain is built for rpm, its the bottom end that is not. With the right valve springs we have a 10,000+rpm capable valvetrain with no other changes.

Rod bolts probably first, we have a really large stroke which gives us our torque.

i read in the issue of R&T with the st/ms3/gti comparo that the genpu actual rev limiter is 7400 but redline same as gen 1... anybody with a pu can confirm or is it a R&T error? I remember reading that they were saying it was pointless to rev it out till the 7400 limiter and was surprised since i never heard that the actual limiter was that high.
