Default I'm a Fucking Believer!

So I was quite skeptical of the infamous XT-M5-QS tranny fluid but holy fucking cow!

I spent $60 bucks on 3 quarts..a rape fest with my inner asshole as the target.

But god damn! I was never one of those people that experienced much "grind" especially after following Jaime's (JBR) 'How-to' on cable adjustment. But my shifting was knotchy as fuck! And with a quarter-mile track event coming up, I couldn't see myself trying to jam down a gear in the middle of a pull...I'd probably just give up and take a hard right into the other car, crowd or wall..

With that said, I can't say it'll work everyone but it did however work for me and work well it did.

Go Go Go!

tl;dr: eat a dick! buy synthetic!

I believe the book is 24k for the "severe" service, which we should all be running.

This gear lube is apparently a bit thinner than the factory stuff and its recommended to change it sooner, especially if you are doing any track days. I need to call my local dealer and see what they are asking for it. I want to get it in before it gets too cold.

I started on stock fluid and then switched to the Ford fluid. It felt much better. I then went back to stock fluid about 15k later and it felt... much better. I think the key is just changing your fluid. I know that goes against all that is holy around here, but that has been my experience.

IIRC, technically, the trans fluid should not be changed very often at all (80k ish), something about the way it breaks down that it actually gets better in time. I dunno, i think its horseshit.

i tried this shit too, maybe the car had it in before i bought it but it did sweet fuck all, nice peace of mind though

When I switched mine in the spring I noticed no difference.
Now that it's getting colder, I don't have the stereotypical effort laden first couple shifts.
It shifts the same as when it's warm so far. We're not into the minuses yet mind you.

OP have you tried any other tranny fluid before?

This and MT-90 definitly get the most mention here,

I'm approaching the 30K mark and suppose I can't go wrong with either.

If I go XT-M5-QS I'll have to hunt it down or ask where everyone is getting theirs though. I shudder whenever I find out the best deals are at walmart... uggh...

Just read the transmission cured sticky, I'm convinced, will give it a try for my next 30K miles.

ok, I just looked it up, and the manual doesn't call for the transmission fluid to be changed at all. Over on BITOG, I've read that the main reason to change the tranny fluid is to get rid of whatever wear particles end up in it, and they say that most of the wear occurs in the first 20 k miles. In other words, if you're really paranoid, change it once at 20k and then you're good to go until you have some reason to need new fluid.

I switched out my factory fill with MT-90 at about 22k, and then I replaced it with the Magic Motorcraft (MM) fluid at 51k because the LSD whine was driving me nuts.

The service guy at the stealership told me that it's recommended every 30K, and that's required to keep the lifetime warranty on the tranny. He said that as long as i replaced the fluid every 30K, they would cover up to 2K in tranny repairs.

Has anyone else heard this? I haven't checked the manual yet. I did put the magical motorcraft fluid in at the 30K change.

I know there are a few other brands that are revered to be "magical" fixes, although the Ford stuff is the first I've used in the Speed3.

**UPDATE** After more miles into, I believe I've got to adjust my shifter cables again, getting into first is my only residual issue. It was not present right after swapping fluids but has become more noticeable with time. All in all, I would still say it was definitely worth the $60

Fuck the manual! I'm joking, but tranny fluid in my opinion falls into the "buy when needed" category. If you're having issues with shifting and you've exhausted the easier options (ie: shifter cable adjustment, inspecting for bent cables etc) this is a great place to start. Not necessarily a cheap one, but seems to work more often than not.

Your service guy is an idiot.

There is no "lifetime warranty" on your transmission, unless it's some sort of weird dealer warranty.

Just so you guys know, there is no performance difference between Redline MT-90 and Ford's magical god piss.

It's all a bunch of hype, peppered with some placebo effects.

While I've never used MT-90 in my MS3, I tried it back-to-back against the Ford Honey in my second Focus and there was definitely a perceptible difference (in the Ford fluid's favor).

Just sayin'.

Yeah, that's kind of how it sounded. I'm going to ask for it in writing, because i think he just wants me to buy new transmission fluid every 30K.

sorry to take the thread kind of OT.

Depends on what you mean by performance. The job of transmission fluid is to protect your transmission against wear, and both Ford's MM (XT-M5-QS) and RedLine's MT-90 are supposed to do a good job there. But, presumably so do a lot of others.

There's definitely a difference between MT-90 and MM, tho. MT-90 made my LSD whine every single day in the parking garage, XT-M5-QS never has once. I personally didn't notice a difference in the way the transmission shifted between OEM, MT-90, and MM, but others say they have. Maybe that's placebo, I can't say. Whether you call noise and shifting feel "performance" or not is up to you, I suppose. It's not part of the central mission of tranny fluid, but it is part of its operating characteristics.

What isn't known is whether Ford's MM is anything but seriously overpriced cheap-ass dino oil + friction modifier. For $60, they take the guesswork out of whether and how much friction modifier to add, tho, and for me that's worth it.

Personally, i can't compare. I've only tried the MT-90. That was a big improvement over the standard fluid.

But, after my recent tire purchasing fiasco based off of member recommendations, I tend to be more skeptical of peoples ability to accurately differentiate real world performance from placebo effect.

It's been my experience thus far that most people, even some track racers, don't truly "feel" their car. That's not something you can practice, though. That's more related to your overall sense of touch and feel. Not everyone is the same in that aspect. Some are more sensitive than others.

It's been my experience thus far that most people, even some track racers, don't truly "feel" their car. That's not something you can practice, though. That's more related to your overall sense of touch and feel. Not everyone is the same in that aspect. Some are more sensitive than others.
So wait, you come into a thread and tell people that there is no difference between Redline MT-90 and Motorcraft XT-M5-QS and then a few posts later admit that you can't really compare them because you've only tried one of them?!

Dude, you're part of the problem that you're complaining about - people giving advice when they have no business doing so...

I use the the Ford Synth. with 4oz. of their "fish oil" limited slip additive. My Mazda dealer did the fluid change.

The 4oz. of "fish oil" replaces 4oz. of the XT-M5-QS. Transmission shifts perfectly... and zero LSD "rasping" (whining) noise.

Am almost 8k miles into it and all is well in Speed3 city. And @Dash08, there is a perceptable difference between MT-90 & the Ford "god-piss".

I just had my transmission fluid changed at the dealer for the first time. At 106k miles. car has always run like a fucking champ. I'm not sure how the new fluid feels as the car is just sitting now while i wait to replace my broken transmission mount. I have the cp-e mount on the way.
