Installing COBB TBE+AP tomorrow

Hello guys, I know I dont post too much on here, but I lurk and do a lot of reading. I have a 2008.5 ms3 and I have purchased the COBB TBE+AP package. I have read too many horror stories on here as well as other forums. The biggest issue with everyones "boom" story seems to lend itself to fuel pump issues.

I have been researching and talking to several people and it seems that the consensus is ti upgrade to Autotech internals. I plan on purchasing the autotech internals very soon.

Since I dont have the hpfp yet, I am certainly staying away from stage 2 for now. My ultimate plan, is to install the TBE+AP tomorrow and drive it on a tune less agressive than stage 2 for the next month and install the hpfp somewhere along the way. Once I move back to Southern CA (in late May), I would really like to make an appointment at COBB SoCal to get the car professionally tuned.

My question is for those on here with experience in tuning with the AP. Since I dont yet have the HPFP, what kind of tune should I run for now to be safe? My only other mod is a Corksport SRI+TIP, the car has 25000 miles on it and I got it at 22,00 miles. The car was taken very good care of and still is. I dont race it or anything, I mainly commute to and from work.

I have heard people speak of a stage 2 "safe tune" or stage one. Just curious what you guys with more experience with this car than me would suggest.

Obviously once I allow enough time for the ecu to "learn" the new parts & tune, I will do some datalogging to be safe and to learn.

PS: I am still learning the ins and outs of tuning these engines and analyzing logs for whats good/bad etc.

Thanks for your input.

I suggest you buy HPFP internals ASAP!

+1 on internals..... unless you hate your current motor.

Your car may run rough since its going to flow so much with a less tune. You might want to hold off and wait till you get internals

Ugh... I was afraid you'd say that. In that case, I may hold off til next weekend and purchase the hpfp internals next week. Another question I had been meaning to ask; where is the best place/price to get the autotech internals from. I saw $349.99 from Edge Autosport.

You could run a Stage 2 safe mode. I would either wait to install the parts till you get an upgraded pump or if you just can't wait, don't go WOT at all.

@eric@edgeautosport

Edge fucking rocks. End of story.

Yeah I think I'll wait, because though I dont go 100% WOT all that often, It would be hard to resist with the new equip.

Thanks for the insight guys, you are helping build my confidence as I get all chicken-dicked after reading all the zoom zoom boom posts.

I actually really enjoy building/working on engines, however at this point in my life I really cant afford to be "ventilating" my engine block.

Yeah I'm I'm the same spot. I have the DP in my garage and the Cobb in my car. Just waiting till next paycheck for the internals..

Is there anything else special I should need for the install? like gaskets, etc.? I have an o2 socket.

Mortose 04-29-2012 10:51 AM

PB BLASTER!!!!!

and a little more search.

there are 3-4 GOOD install how-to's and they all apply.

Listen everyone, internals are not need with a tbe and "stage 2". Everyone scares the fuck out of people for no damn reason. I personally ran a catless tbe and a stage 2 tune for over 25k miles without issue. Internals are highly recommended, but not needed. Flash a stage 1 tune and call it a day until you have money for them.

+1 on waiting for the internals. Do them first and you don't have to worry. Peace of mind is better than your car running like shit and not being able to apply the proper tune for your mods.
