JBarone Short Shifter Plate

Thought I'd start a thread on this so those who have picked one up could post their comments...it's been discussed here some http://www.mazdaspeedforums.org/foru...86/index2.html

I echo 240mazspd3's comments -- i have a SRI too so installation was stupid easy (thanks Jamie). The difference is amazing; the throws are sooo much shorter and the weight is just about perfect. The product is quality; water jet cut and solid. Again, like 240mazspd3 said, the kit is complete down to two kinds of instruction (on a disc), loctite and lube.

So, if you've been on the fence about a short throw due to price or because you wanted to keep the stock shifter height, you're not going to do better then this.

Jamie -- absolutely great work on this.

ok

so I will say this

For an aftermarket part...it's probably some of the most comprehensive packaging I have seen to date. It comes with instructions; Very detailed with good pictures. It also came with a CD and ALL hardware...So pretty good.

I'll be installing this tomorrow probably, I've been busy and it's been raining all damn weekend.

IshiKage 09-28-2009 10:17 PM

For those wondering if they should get a Short Shift plate or Short Throw shifter.

i say FUCK!!! a STS. since the throw distance is much shorter. the shifter height feels as if its alittle shorter eventhough its the same height.

but being that the distance of arm travel is shorter, i guess thats why the shifter feels just a "tad"shorter to me

i love this plate. combined with my TRZ RMM. my car feels better than it ever has before. feels so solid now. can wait to get an Ingalls ETD to combine with these two

10 min installed, still using stock hardware, stock height, shorter throws= FTMFW!

JBarone SSP rocks:headbang:

JBR 09-29-2009 05:45 AM

Thanks guys! I appreciate the kind words.

armarine04 09-29-2009 06:26 AM

re-posted in proper titled tread.

Just installed my jbarone plate today and my thoughts (as if they matter right): good packaging, fast shipping; solid quality pieces; easy install even though I got one of the currupt disks, after e-mailing jbarone that he sent me a new sent of instructions to my e-mail within the half hour; and SUPER short shifts they say 35 to 40% reduction feels like 50%; very impressed with the part in every way! I dare say this should go in the catagory with rear mm and intake as the must have 1st bolt ons for this car.

thanks Jamie

karl-hungus 09-29-2009 10:49 AM

thanks, Jamie. prevented me from spending $80+ extra on a short throw shifter i didn't want to install.

Chief_Wiggum 09-29-2009 10:56 AM

I meant to add that not only is the initial installation quick and easy, taking it off for dealer visits is equally quick and easy.

IshiKage 09-29-2009 01:20 PM

stealership can suck on my balls if they bitch about the SSP

JBR 10-01-2009 11:00 AM

Chief_Wiggum ,
I've go the new logo for you.

Nice PIC too!!

I've got 3 set left until I get more made.

boardjnky4 10-01-2009 11:24 AM

holy fuck, what a difference!

awesome product man. I think you got the dimensions spot on. Any shorter of a throw and you would be banging gears unnecessarily.

Very Cool!! You're right more is not always better.

Let see some pics of them installed.

boardjnky4 10-01-2009 11:36 AM

Already buried under the stock intake...plus, mine isn't very attractive

even with all of that stock junk to pull out, I was able to install it before my g/f was finished watching "America's Next Top Model"(glad I found something to get me out of watching that abortion of a show).

i almost bought the ep4 sst, but went w/ jbarone's ssp... half the cost / 10 min install to get similar throw reduction.

i'm very happy with the results and jamie's customer service is outstanding... shipped same day (pet peeve of mine) and received it in 3 days. thanks, jamie.

When I got this I told Jamie I didn't car what color he had at the time because I really wanted this plate with the intensions of just hitting it with some flat black. When I got it in the mail I was to anxious to put it on I didn't want to wait ti get the paint, paint it, and let it dry good over night so I slapped it on right then and and there. Love the mod the blue will stay its actually growing on me.

The added resistance is probably the best way to describe the only very minimal con to this mod. Deffinately doesn't out wieght the shorter throws it provides.

Again thanks Jamie, great piece of work!

Just ordered mine. Always wanted a shorter throw with stock height. Wasn't to keen on taking the console/shifter apart (even though its an easy mod). Accomplished both tasks and saved some cheddar. Will post pics/review when received.

Element 10-05-2009 08:19 PM

Can anyone comment how this plate works with a non-weighted shift knob? The shift knob I have is not even close to the same weight of the OEM knob.

armarine04 10-06-2009 06:13 AM

Can anyone comment on why the weight of the shift knob matters at all. never really quite understood that

I think it lessens the amount of effort required to move the shifter. Once you get the mass in motion it moves easier. So the initial effort is there but then it just goes sort of by it self.

That's just my thoughts. I could be wrong.

Jamie

I think it may require a little more effort to shift. I would try with the weight I provide you. Drive the car for a couple of weeks. If you don't like how it feels try the stock weight. Drive it for a couple of weeks and see. Don't just do a few miles then change the weight. You won't get properly adjusted to the feel. I think you will be just fine with the weight I provided you.

It will work but whether you like it or not is the question. It'll be pretty notchy and require more effort to row through all the gears. I had a problem with getting into 1st a lot of times when I used a SSP with my Cobb STS. YMMV.

Thats fine I'm not worried about the "mazdaspeed" it's not my thing and I don't want people asking for it on mine. I just want people to give him some credit for this version it's his and not mine thats all. Sounds like your a little bent for no reason.

i just installed a JBarone plate on my car and it's awesome! a MUCH shorter shift with stock height kept. it's a really nice piece and it only took about 10 min to install. comes with very detailed instruction from what i glanced at and it looked like a 10 year old with half a brain could install it with the instruction provided. awesome work man, thanks again.

Sure you ain't a little bent that you can't try and charge $105 for this anymore? :sly:

Maybe trying to throw distance between the two of you should Mazda NA legal get wind of the "trademark infringement"? Maybe hoping you'd be the only game in town again after that? Oh wait, someone could still make mine, oh well...so much for that.

Aetherfury 10-10-2009 02:49 PM

If this has already been answered somewhere else I apologize, but when I put on my CP-E CAI the stock shifter "bar" or whatever is like 1/4" from hitting the CAI pipe in third gear and I'm wondering if it's actually hitting during shifts.

I see the pictures, but I'm not sure what gear the car is in so my question is: because of the way this mod is set up, is it going to give me a much larger gap away from my CAI?

if you are talking about the shifter weight, he gives you a shorter one so you will have no problem.

I'm thinking more like around $50.00-60.00 if I get the prices for the stuff we will see. I really didn't think anyone would pay $105.00 in the first place but if they did then so be it. The demand isn't high enough for it to be on the top of the list for only game in town.

Well, I think that would be fine if that's pricing that occurs but, I guess my rusty memory circuits can only recall an $85 get-it-now, but-wait-there's-more intro price, with $90 to $105 being floated as post-deal pricing. If you didn't think people would pay those top prices, how and why did they get disseminated to this list? I certainly spat the dummy when I saw even the lower of the three prices and, I'm not shy about buying stuff for my car.

Everybody's got a right to make a buck, I have no problem with that, to a point. I just appreciate business dealings being as fair and up front as possible in this lying, cheating, conniving, self-interested, morally-decayed world. I didn't feel $85 plus for a chunk of aluminum with 4 holes in it was fair.

JBR 10-12-2009 03:31 PM

Getting back on track....

For those that have been inquiring:

The plate for the 6 is a no go. I've spent close to 80 hours on design and fabrication over the last 2 weeks and there is no way to do it right. The problem is the end of the cable Mazda used on the 6 is 2x the size of the end on the 3. If you don't want the car to fully engage in 2nd then I have what your looking for.

The throw was so short to.

Sorry folks. I do have a couple of cool things coming up soon and plates for the MS3 galore.

ok ill just add my little review here. jamie was very quick to reply to my questions through pm and i ordered one from him right away. i got it and installed it a few days later. the paint even smelled fresh. install was easy and took abou 10 minutes. my throw is now super short, however, it takes a little more push to get into gears because of the change in leverage, but i will get used to that soon enough. overall, great product andi would suggest it for anyone who wants to cut their throw in half!!

I am enjoying mine pretty much...except for going in to 2nd both from first and third. I think this why...

Jbarone...and ideas?...seems like it is hitting in 2nd.

IshiKage 10-28-2009 07:54 PM

thanks for mentioning that. i have a hater(MS3077) that doesnt want to believe how hard it is to get into 2nd and 3rd. especially 2nd. with the SSP going WOT, 1st, 2nd, 3rd.

so i kept mis-shifting the last time i went to the track for the first time with the plate in. its pretty much impossible to get into 2nd once you miss it.

i think im going to take the plate out anytime i go to the track, not sure if its something you can ever get used to

Jbarone...and ideas?...seems like it is hitting in 2nd.

The tolerances in this area are very close. The transmissions is already seated and locked in to 2nd before this point. This is not the cause of 1st to 2nd, 3rd to 2nd issues. This is actually an inherent problem even with short throw shifters.

Here is how to resolve it:
There is an adjustment to get the shifter aligned with the 1st to 2nd throw. This adjustment could have come from the factory a little stiff for your car but you didn't notice it due to the LONG throw shifter. The loss in leverage from going to the STSP probably made the issue known.

Here is a video and it explains how to tune the shifter. I have done this, I know others who have done this with my plate and with short throw shifters, and believe me my car is sweet to shift now.

Here's how to get in there. It's so easy.

1 - Remove your shift knob by rotating it counter clockwise
2 - Open the ashtray door and remove the ashtray
3 - Push the boot down and reach under the the silver ring surrounding the boot and gently pull up. The cover will pop right off.
4 - Slip the trim with the boot off the shifter and set aside
5 - Reassemble in the reverse order

When making the adjustment to the shifter take your time. Make small adjustments. The end result is well worth the extra time you take to make it shift really nice.

http://www.freedomcomputers.net/ms3/...uneshifter.wmv

I will post this on my site later today for future reference.

Thanks,
Jamie

how much did you adjust it by

thedude 10-29-2009 08:56 PM

Roughly a hundred thou forward. I may still play with it a bit, but it helped quit a bit. After playing with shifter I realized why I need the solid mounts...it moves pretty easy.

i like the way the shift feels with the plate. its just than when driving aggressively, i didnt want to go into 2nd and 3rd to easily. not that i adjusted the shifter its fine

Yeah. after driving around a bit today I am really happy with the shift feel using the plate (after adjustment), but I do notice that under WOT its hard to get into second. I am thinking its quite possibly the rear mount flexing too much moving the tranny with respect to the fixed shifter. Any one else have thoughts on this?

IshiKage 10-30-2009 06:00 PM

mine was like that but not anymore since adjusting it.

Installed it, love it. No fine tuning needed on my end - great product, well made. Kudos Jamie, didn't know I could love driving it that much more. Shipping to Can. was quick - great service, will tell all around here.

Yes they do.

Installed mine last week and I like the feel better.

mo4130 11-02-2009 03:50 PM

When I installed mine the other day, even after fine tuning the shifter it sometimes feels as if its popping out of second and then when going into 3rd, it grinds. To me it feels as if even though the clutch pedal is depressed that the clutch actually hasnt released the pressure on the plates.

That's odd. Is it, or is it not popping out of 2nd?

As far as the clutch releasing, this would have no effect on that.

Help with more details and we'll get to the bottom of it. No one has reported anything similiar to what you describe.

Thanks,
Jamie

Mine felt like grinding a bit in 2nd (as if the clutch wasnt fully depressed as well), but once I fiddled with the adjustment and it went away. I would trying doing a little further adjustment...but in really small increments.

mo4130 11-02-2009 08:40 PM

It feels as if it literally popping out of second sometimes, im gonna fine tune it tomorrow. but other then that, a fine piece and makes my shifter feel soo much better.

N|njutsu55 11-02-2009 08:43 PM

Just installed mine this afternoon. It feels like my old STI short shifter. Good stuff. I took the car out for a grocery run and everything felt solid. I'm thinking in time I'll need to make adjustments as others are doing but for now all shifts are smooth.

Excellent product :bigok:
Thanks again Jamie.

When you tune your shifter take the extra time to get it right. If this does not resolve you problem we'll need to get more in depth. We can talk by phone if need be.

Thanks,
Jamie

I can't PM either, too much of a noob here! I really want one of these, all the STS's on the market drop the knob height - it's supposed to be a "short SHIFT kit" not a "short KNOB kit"!

How do you tweak it?

Thanks,
Jamie

If it's not too late, I may have to bite on this, had something similar for my old 02 Sentra SE-R and loved it (especially ease of install)

Never too late.

I just installed mine and I don't like it. 2nd gear just barely goes in and could easily popped out of gear. Also during the install I notice the shifter boot is rubbing against another cable, overtime this is going to ruin the shifter cable boot.

Only a couple of people have reported issues with 2nd gear. It was easily corrected.
I would recommend adjusting your shifter as described in the video found here:

As for the boot, I doubt it will ever wear out and I provide the lube for added protection.

Let me know if I can be of any help.

Thanks,
Jamie

The change over from paint to powder coat is complete. The new parts look very impressive.

my 2 cents... i've had mine on for awhile now and it's really grown on me. initially i liked the short shifts but felt uncomfortable with the engagement. the ssp has a stickier/thicker enagagement if that makes any sense. i would delay letting out the clutch thinking i wasn't in gear. eventually i overcame my engagement fears.

- i've never popped out of gear w/ the ssp
- the shifter cable boot looks fine despite the rubbing

Have you ever adjusted the shifter? It makes it very nice.

Yeah, I like how it feels too.

wankular 11-13-2009 11:45 PM

I've had it about a month and had no problems. The other day I had to use a little effort to get into reverse but it went in. It's weird because I checked and in reverse the plate isn't near anything. But once it's in gear I've never had it pop out. I'm not looking forward to going back to stock if I ever have to go to the dealership.

I wouldn't bother taking it off to go to the dealer unless your having some kind of drivetrain issue. I don't

Thanks,
Jamie
