Knock Retard...my nemesis

Went to the track yesterday thinking that ALL the things I've done since the LAST time would have surely cured my KR problem...installed a new FMIC to keep the BATs down, installed step colder plugs, made the tune (with AP) extra rich to make sure it doesn't go lean, turned down the boost (target of 18 using ATR), upgraded CDFP to make sure it could deliver enough gas to not go lean, and installed a meth/water injection kit.

Yet to my utter disbelief, I still was plagued by WOT KR.

First and second are fine...pull hard and strong with no KR at all. About half way through third and all through fourth I get KR. I ended up just letting off the KR was so bad. Ran a 14.2 at 99. Absolutely pathetic for what I have done to the car.

It wasn't even a hot day...temps in the 50s at best.

So WTF can I do/check to get rid of this BS? Should I try closing the gap on the spark plug? If so, what would you recommend the target gap to be? What else should I look at? Sorry, I don't have any logs because I forgot to start logging every time I wanted to. Got too frustrated and just forgot to do it.

As always, any help will be rewarded with rep :)

.26 to .28 gap and what size meth injector are you using and what meth mixture

AntiStock 05-09-2010 03:29 PM

I'm using the middle of the three injectors that come with the AEM kit, and I was running a 50/50 mix.

perhaps injector seals?

Hmm...found the old thread where someone recommended a gap of 0.032, and I think I remember gapping the plugs to that width. That might be my issue right there.

Gap should be .030 MAX. .028 is best.

How many degrees of timing did your car pull at wot anyway?

DSIT995 05-09-2010 06:34 PM

As others suggested start w/ checking the plugs, and it will help if u posted up some logs so we can get a better idea of whats going on

Also post up ur map......

I don't have any logs but I will try to attach my map. I actually ran into another issue - I set my rev limiter too low, but I'm changing that tonight.

ANY input on the map would be greatly appreciated...I stepped far outside my comfort zone with it, and made changes I thought seemed logical, but I may have been mistaken.

Mods (just copy/pasting a list I put on another site so ignore the non-performance stuff)

- CP-E cold air intake with Amsoil filter
- RPMC turbo inlet pipe
- CP-E front mount intercooler
- Forge bypass valve
- AEM methanol/water injection kit
- NGK step-colder plugs
- Corksport catless downpipe with DEI exhaust wrap
- PTP upgraded cam-driven fuel pump
- Hotchkis rear sway bar
- AWR rear sway bar endlinks
- Street Unit rear motor mount
- 18x8 Rota Torque wheels (gold)
- 235/40-18 Hankook Ventus V12 Evo tires
- MSD DashHawk 2

For that map, I had taken an OTS map from Cobb's website (stage 2 + FMIC 91 octane, I believe) and have been changing small things bit by bit. I did the throttle response and closed loop changes talked about in the AP section. I made the WOT AFR a little richer, adjusted the boost dynamics, and WOT boost targets. I also, obviously, calibrated the MAF.

I know there's not much else I can do without a datalog. I will try to get one soon.

Gap the plugs closer to minimize the flame created in the combustion chamber, mine are gapped to. 020, also try two step colder plugs

Sounds like your timing is too far advanced.
Adjust your timing.
Go here and read how to in ATR.

If your adding fuel and still getting knock you've got something else going on.. At 25psi with my gt35 I was still pulling fuel, and have never seem more than 1.4 KR..

Frequentflyer 05-15-2010 12:40 PM

Have you done any logs? That would help us see what's going on. How much KR? If it's <2.0, I wouldn't obsess over it. Your timing tables look different than my stock map. Maybe you should cut and paste your stock map's timing into this map and see if it does it with stock timing values. How much boost are you seeing when you get the KR? What are your BAT's? Are you using 91 or 93 octane? These are all things that we need to know to help you. With all your mods, especially water/meth injection, a fuel pump, front mount, etc... I cannot believe you have a bad KR problem that is from REAL knock unless something is wrong.
