Be sure it's not the serpentine belt tensioner. They sound kinda similar. I used a paint pin or something to put a mark on the belt, then then i would watch / listen and see if the belt was in rhythm with the noise. If so, it's not a tappet. You may just have a kink in the belt and it bangs the tensioner.

What do you mean by paint pin? It does seen a little high pitch for a valve cap. And i thought it was cycl 1 near the belt.. I'll have to check it out

he means put a mark on your belt with like a silver/white paint pen...start the car and watch for the stripe...if it comes around to the same rhythm as the noise its the tensioner.

make a very wide stripe so you can see it...

kinda like timing an old car with a timing light lol... OMG those were a simpler time.....points...condenser....feeler gauges to set the gap..

you prab too young to remember that

Just a marker, shoot even white out will work, or a sharpie, or a spritz of spray paint...... or lip stick. Or blood. I wouldn't use mud or dirt or anything, cause the back side of the belt faces a few pulleys. You could use a smear of jelly or jam i bet. Maybe even spit, but you'd have to watch it fast.


Probably a few other things you could use, but pretty much anything to put a noticeable mark on the belt. Then kick back and watch the rhythm of the spot and compare it to the rhythm of the sound.

Just take the belt off then start you car if the noise is still there with the belt is off its the cap. If it goes away it's the tensioner.

haa timing lights so much easier lol


thanks guys seems alittle fast for the belt to come back around the noise is fast but ill try it tomorrow.

The belt speed is pretty close to the engine rpm. Shoot, honestly... you could just buy a new belt, throw it on.... and if sound is still there..... not the belt.
