Low Compression..Tested: Rings

Hey guys, I don't have a lot of time to ever really be on here, but I have a few generic questions I was hoping some more knowledgeable members could quickly answer..

While purchasing parts to vent the crankcase better, (perm plate, gen 2 valve cover, breather cap, vented and sealed dual catch cans) The car began to show serious signs of compression issues..tested, and is indefinitely rings.
Long story short, I'm in the process of sourcing an engine (as it's my daily). For those of you who have simply replaced pistons/rings, would it be more cost effective to find a preassembled short block and do the swap myself, or simply buy the needed parts and have a machine shop redo/hone the block for me to later assemble...or is the honing necessary?

I'm assuming trolling will follow, just needing a general repair path to follow and i'll be on my way.lol Thanks everyone,

-Andrew

You cant put new pistons and cylinder rings into a used cylinder head, you should never switch pistons and rings between cylinder also. The pistons and rings have a wear pattern in each cylinder, each cylinder can be different wear pattern also. So if you decided to get new pistons and rings then the head needs to go to the shop.
The cost of the getting the head redone is pretty much all labor($$$$), and I time. So don't expect to get it back same day. Could also depend on how busy the shop is.

I'm not disagreeing with your statement that you shouldn't drop new pistons/rings into a motor without honing, etc., but I do disagree with the idea that it "can't" be done.

the pistons dont go in the "head"

you can rent a honer at autozone, its easy to do, its also easy to do too much.

Beat me to it. If the piston enters the head you have more problems than just honing.

uh, he meant block
he was trying to say,.....
yes, you have to put a fresh crosshatch down for the new rings
