Default Low Coolant Temps

I've been having issues on 2 different engines now with coolant temps getting too low. I was driving Ortega highway coming back from Nator the other day at like 70 - 80mph in 65 degree weather and temps were dipping down into the 140's! This was after the car was fully warmed up before I left.

On the previous engine it wasn't as bad, I would be doing 100 on the freeway in 40 degree weather and the temps would only dip down to 155 or so, still not good though.

So my question is, when you get a new long block from Mazda, does that come with a new thermostat? If it got replaced, is it really the thermostat or is there something else going on, like a bad sensor?

The thermostat would come separate. You might have one of them new "fail open" thermostats, which is better than most that fail closed... Carl lol

Get yourself a new thermostat.

Oh well if it has the same thermostat that would explain a lot. I'll pick up a new one and see what happens.

Check the p/n on the thermostat. My car never used to fully heat up and it had a different thermostat than the one that I replaced it with.

On the other end of the spectrum what's normal operating temp? Because I decided to see what my temps were like for the shit of it the other day and I'll see 187 for a while but settle closer to 215-219.

My thermostat was stuck open so temps were right in the 150s when driving and over 200+ when stopped for long periods of time. After replacing it, now I have a steady 186.5.

My thermostat was stuck open and I saw highway cruising temps of 158-163 and in stop-and-go, it would only get up to about 200, but would fall VERY quickly once I started moving again.

There's a great how-to thread which contains a couple of different how-tos and my experience swapping my thermostat out without removing anything but the thermostat and one piece of radiator hose.

Domino81 did mine while I was fighting with the back of my car. He swapped it out in about 40 minutes. Not real tough, but that was on my MS6, MS3 might be different.

I was watching mine on the way to and from OCC today and it was 183-187. But if I let the car idle for long temps go to 215-219and they don't come down if I'm in stop and go around town. Which I thought was odd.
