| Not Ranked : 0 score Long blocks are typically just full bottom and top ends with no manifolds and a flywheel; the rest has to be swapped from the existing powerplant.

| Not Ranked : 0 score Full bottom end? That's a short block. @06Speed6 might have an engine built for less than that. Unless it's sold.

| Not Ranked : 0 score Got some quotes today and some more info on the dealer replacement. Dealer long block is similar to what Enki said. It will come with all new OEM parts, block, internals, front cover and timing, oil pump. They cannot provide info on the oil pan and valvel cover. Still looking into that. $3800 . Can get in two days. no shipping/no core. Still need gasket set and move all accessories, manifolds, fuel rail, etc. 12month/12000 mile warranty. Found a few used with 60K+. These are looking like $3000+ for complete, usually minus turbo and accessories. Many come with warranty of 30 days to 1 year. Still need to move accessories, manifolds, etc. Condition not known until i get it to house. Nearest ones are over 100 miles from house. Most are 200 plus miles away. Found one rebuilt through Precision Engine out of Texas. They want 2095 for a remanufactured long block plus $500 core (mine is bad), plus $225 to ship. Thats $2820 shipped remanufactured. They include gasket set to finish. They claim to have been around for 70 years and have a great reputation. They offer a 3 year 36000 mile warranty on the engine. He mentioned Topline as the components that they use. Never heard of them. A few questions: Anyone herad of Precision Engine? Had experience with them? Anyone familiar with Topline components? Still looking and pondering my options. BTW - the head may or may not be good still. Would definitely need a clean and check though. |

| Not Ranked : 0 score I guess my concern is whether the motor will come with the old valve cover or the new one? The new one is part of the TSB intake kit but it is only part of it. Not sure if the other parts can be obtained without paying $400 for the kit. |

| Not Ranked : 0 score $4K including labor, from an actual dealer with a warranty? That sounds pretty reasonable to me. Sorry about your car, though. I bought my 09 new and the engine is stock. The car will be sold before the powertrain warranty expires, I've already had enough trouble with the clunky suspension. Love the car but I don't have the cash flow or credit line to just plunk a new motor in it. Rather put that towards a new car, and the MS3 still has pretty good resale value. Anyway, best of luck, and thanks for your story. Hope it turns out well for you. |

Can't have your cake and eat it too but you can get pretty close with the proper care and tune of the vehicle. Widespread fear that the MS3 is a ticking time bomb is largely unfounded.

My reply was directed at some of the blown motor hysteria that was rampant over a year ago and that thankfully has calmed down.

| Not Ranked : 0 score Q: When I bought my car I had it inspected at a Mazda dealer. They told me that my turbo was blown but that it was covered under warranty. I bought the car (From a non-Mazda dealership) and took it to another dealership closer to home, who told me that my turbo was fine and that they couldn't authorize a replacement. My turbo isn't smoking - but it smoked the day I had it inspected. Is it possible for OTHER things to cause the exhaust to have produced smoke once and then be fixed? I have driven the car HARD and am unable to get it to smoke - even if I let it idle 10 minutes after driving it over 100 and alternately hard from a stop (Hard stop and go driving for 30 minutes). Thoughts? |

| Not Ranked : 0 score Well, after 3 months without my car, fighting with MEPP, they replaced my engine and turbo for a total price or 7800.00. I had to pay about 1100 of that but hey, got me a new engine. All I can say is keep all your reciepts cause that was the first thing they asked for even before they authorized diagnosis. I will get my AP with my income tax to try an avoid this. Thanks to this forum and members in helping to steer me on how to approach MEPP!! Who says warrantys suck, just go in prepared!! |

| Not Ranked : 0 score Here are some pics of the new Mazda long block. Cost was $3500 no core. No shipping. As you can see it was packaged nicely on a sturdy cardboard palet. It included valve cover (new style), timing cover and crank pully, fuel pump housing, exhaust studs, oil pump, water pump and oil pan. Needed to purchase a few gaskets, about $80 worth. Then engine was tightly sealed as you can see with tape over ever opening even some that were not openings. Very happy with it so far...got almost 1000 miles on it and the first oil change revealed no problems. The engine was delivered at top dead center with no crank sensor but the tooth was marked in case the engine was turned prior to mounting the crank sensor....I will post more pics if anyone is interested. It took about 15 hours to remove and install including a new clutch. It took about 20 hours to clean parts and all the oil and coolant on everything from the grenading rod. Probably could do the swap in a long day if I had to do it again....not hoping I will have to though. |

| Not Ranked : 0 score A few more pics before it went in... ForumRunner_20120203_194107.png ForumRunner_20120203_194126.png Clutch installed...had to wait for days for the alignment tool...$9 shipped. Used old flywheel bolts. ForumRunner_20120203_194151.png Back in the car before start up. ForumRunner_20120203_194222.png The engine was shipped with new Motorcraft plugs too, which I was not aware of until I went to put in the Densos that I waited a few days for. If anyone is looking for stock plugs, let me know. |

| Not Ranked : 0 score Another word of caution...you should install the ground strap behind the intake manifold BEFORE mounting the manifold. I did not realize that this part of the harness separated from the main harness so I waited. It took an hour to get the darn thing back there with the engine on the stand! |

| Not Ranked : 0 score Used old flywheel...looked brand new after 99k. Included new head. Now if someone could tell me the bolt size for the head bolts, I could find a buyer or have redone. No socket works. No 12 socket metric/SAE works. It is 12 point not torx. Last edited by cplensdorf; 02-03-2012 at 06:04 PM. Reason: MSF Database - Automerged Doublepost |

| Not Ranked : 0 score $3500 is not to bad actually for a long block . Not a bad option ! I have a motor I need to rebuild it will cost me about the same in price . But the chance I could make a mistake putting it together . Good luck with the new long block !

| Not Ranked : 0 score No it was reasonable compared to 3200 for a used motor with 60-70k...rebuild were almost nonexistent....when you add up the gaskets and alignment tools...and the cost of screwing it up...not to mention that there is no core charge ($500-900 for block and more for head)and no shipping charges...it wasnt horrible...it also has a 12k,12month warranty. |

| Not Ranked : 0 score just adding too it, it seems no body knows what our engines blow, iam pretty knowledgeable about cars, i had a built subie. but any way, my ms6 has 84xxx miles on it, had it for 3 weeks and today pulling it out of my long driveway. heard knock knock, boom. oil and coolant were everywhere, and oil was shooting out my exhaust, idk what that means. but i found a hole in the back under the turbo looks like cylinder 3's rod or the crank shot off and did the damage. theres oil in the air box, everywhere. no warning sign, its garage kept, and its all stock one owner. had fresh oil change. and its been running fine, no problems no noises. and today was just a regular day until i hit 25mph in second gear getting read to shift into 3rd. i was probably at 3500 rpms or so. but it sucks cause the dealership won't fix it cause aim 200 miles over my warranty. which is bs. |
