MS3 synthetic oil and filter

a) how often to change the oil on synthetic oil? (ex 7.5k miles)
b) what kind/brand/type of filter to use?

so I'm using Mobil 1 full synthetic 5w-30. But which filter should i match with it? i was told to stay away from "fram". recommend any good ones?

samsel450r 12-01-2009 02:51 PM

i use mobile 1 full synthetic and change it every 3k miles an for the filter i just use a fram..

18psiWhiteMS3 12-01-2009 02:52 PM

i like the stock filter

glocK23 12-01-2009 02:52 PM

I never liked Mobile 1 synthetic, I think it's garbage.

Anyways, I use Pennzoil Platinum 5w30 and a motorcraft cartridge filter.

Every 4K miles.

karl-hungus 12-01-2009 03:01 PM

pp 5w30 & mobil 1 big spin on filter - 8 qts ftmfw.

switching to rotella 5w40 based on haltech's advice.

nyghtryder 12-01-2009 04:37 PM

k&n makes nice filters. Ive been using mobil 1 since first oil change. Ive got 2 uoa's posted with my 3rd on its way. I did change to 5w-40 this change though.

Bonafide_Spd3 12-01-2009 06:17 PM

PP 10w 30, just changed from mobil 1. Heard it was better so had to change

Frequentflyer 12-01-2009 06:30 PM

Shell Rotella T Syn 5W-40 and I've been using Purolator Pure One filters changed every 5,000 miles. I'm pretty sure I could go 6,000 easily, but I stick with 5k. I've had 3 oil analysis come back with strong numbers and high TBN after 5,000 miles.

dizwhoadayjohn 12-01-2009 06:32 PM

mobil1 synthetic 5w-30. And factory oil filter. I can't complain about free mobil1 oil so that's what i'll keep using until whenever

ms3077 12-01-2009 10:31 PM

AMsoil Full Synthetic 5W30 - 3 to 5k intervals - Factory Filter

It's expensive but worth it in my opinion. The car runs great with it.

IshiKage 12-01-2009 10:48 PM

PP 10w30. fram filter. change every 3k miles

used Mobile 1 and amsoil but my car likes PP the best

TegRacer324 12-02-2009 08:30 AM

Castrol Synthetic because it's always on sale at autozone. Change it every 5k. Really don't understand why people buy synthetic and change it every 3k.

eddelgado 12-02-2009 08:33 AM

Penzoil Platinum 5w-30 and Wix filter every 5000 miles.

Ed

Blackspeed 12-02-2009 08:40 AM

PP 5W30 mazda filter 4000 miles

Where do you guys go to get UOA's? Ive been curious to get one, but dont know where to go.

dan7225 12-02-2009 10:10 AM

$22.50 @ blackstone labs.

i used mobil1 10w-30 and napa gold/wix (5)1516 spin on filter. it's HUUUUGE!

Dash08 12-02-2009 11:13 AM

Penzoil Platinum 5W-30 changed every 3-4K religiously. I have the spin-on filter conversion and just use Mazda filters. I also always replace the crush washer on the plug. I don't leave things like that to chance.

There is nothing wrong with Fram filters. They've been making filters for a looooong time. I've ran my fair share of Frams in the past and never once had an issue.

terrylharris 12-02-2009 11:38 AM

Since Mazda does not recommend, actually prohibits, synthetic oil.....what do you guys do about your warranty? I have called big Mazda and they claim to void warranty if you use synthetics.

That's rubbish. Synthetic oil offers greater protection and prolongs engine life. Especially on forced induction engines. This is just common knowledge. It also helps with controlling fuel dilution which is the reason most change their oil so frequently in the 2.3 MZR. This engine sees heavy fuel dilution even after only 3000 miles. Go check the UOA threads. It's all there.

As for warranty, when I had my engine replaced under warranty, I sent them all my receipts from my synthetic oil purchases and they didn't even raise an eyebrow. I even had the spin-on filter conversion, but because it's a FOMOCO part, they didn't say anything.

Just do your research so you have the upper hand if anything goes down. I did and it got my engine replaced for free with warranty still intact.

eddelgado 12-02-2009 01:40 PM

You can also get your oil analysis kits from NAPA. They run about $15 each or so but do not include shipping. The analysis is pretty much the same as what you get from Blackstones. I think Blackstone may provide more detailed comments from someone reviewing the results.

If that was the case they wouldnt use the oil I provide them when they changed my oil.

Do we know what the factory fill is? Alot of cars now come with synthetic as the factory fill.

Factory fill is synthetic. My dealership only stocks synthetic oil... Not that I let them change my oil...

Where you get the fomoco spin on conversion from?

ANGRYEAGLE 12-02-2009 04:31 PM

I was also told by my dealer that they do not recommend synthetic. i thought that they would jump at the chance to make more money off of me, but no. so I just let them do my oil changes while it is under warranty.

Street Unit. Talk to Mark. I paid like $60 bucks shipped and it came with a Mazda filter and a new crush washer. It's a good deal, my oil changes are even faster now.

If the factory fill is synthetic then the techs at your dealers a moron. It never ceases to amaze me how little they know about these cars.

Frequentflyer 12-02-2009 06:19 PM

There should be no reason a synthetic oil should not be recommended in modern turbo-charged engine.

214mazdaspeeder 12-02-2009 07:01 PM

just recently royal purple 5w-40 evry 4k k&n filter (B4 turbo smoke 5W-30 evry 4k) my dealer does my oil changes and they never said anything about my synthetic he said its better. i wish mazda would get on the same page

bioevolve 12-02-2009 07:04 PM

not sure where you've been, but they changed that.

thats why they have synthetic amsoil at the dealership

lidokrantz 12-02-2009 07:18 PM

LOL....at my Mazda dealership it is recommended to switch to fully synthetic asap by the service mgr...i did at 600 miles and never an issue with Mobil1(what the dealer uses)...although i do change it every 3,000 miles..I also bring in my own oil and Mazda uses there filter... I never heard that from the factory they use synthetic....i doubt it actually, but maybe they changed from 07..IMO change it frequently and all the good oils will work fine, but feel the synthetic is better for a turbo car. May try PP...if it's on sale, but so far Mobili1has treated me just fine..

starscream 12-02-2009 07:28 PM

I thought the factory oil was a Synthetic Blend rather then a true Synthetic?

bbonkboy 12-02-2009 08:11 PM

Never did a oil change on this MS3. Where is the oil filter on this car? Is it easily accessible?

what is this spin on conversion everyone seems to be talking about?

nyghtryder 12-02-2009 11:20 PM

oil change is easy, but you have to remove the plastic tray. People get the spin on because you can get a larger oil filter as well as making the filter change easier. If you dont have the spin on you need to get an oil filter wrench made for the mazda. I could only find the right size at autozone the others were too loose. look in the how to section im sure someone has done a write up.

Blackspeed 12-03-2009 08:22 AM

you can get the filter wrench with a puchase of a box of filters here:

lmao......

DR_ 12-04-2009 07:51 PM

I cut a hole in the plastic under tray that is just big enough to change out the oil filter. There is already a hole there but it doesn’t line up with the filter so I just made one that did line up.
