Default Misfire. Hard start. Jumpy idle. P0300

Well here it goes.

I recently bought my 08 speed3 the day after I bought it I got a check engine light. Read the code (p0300). I’ve done plugs and coils compression test and still got it. I recently reset the code and it took around 100 miles for the light to come back on. Also with this misfire I get a horrible jumpy idle after being in gear and shift long to neutral and coasting or when I come to a stop. The idle bounces around from 500-750 usually then calms down and falls into the 600-750 range. Other times it’s horrible and falls way below 500 to almost stall (only happened once). Now as for the hard start...it doesn’t happen all the time but every once in awhile it will take a little longer to crank max 8-10 secs. Once it starts it blows smoke (only time it ever smokes) and smell of unburnt fuel. What the hell could it be I’m at a loss. I was thinking maybe crank position sensor? Any input is helpful.

A log would help the most, but my initial impressions are that your engine has no idea what's going on in terms of airflow. Now I could be wrong as I don't have much diagnostic experience, but it sounds like a MAF or 02 problem. Again, a log would make this a lot easier.

Make no mistake the AP does both. I use my AP as a diagnostic tool that has saved me tons of money since I've had it. Ya it can tune your car and that's very useful but that's half the story. Don't look at it as a performance mod, it's a doctor for your car.

I bought Versatuner to diagnose an issue before I bought any performance mods. Probably the best money spent on this car.

I just read on that versatuner sight that an aftermarket intake will mess with the maf. And mine has a cold air intake on it. So it’s probably my maf sensor and buying a new maf probably will do the same thing right

If the intake is stock size, it shouldn't be terribly bad.

Idk I might buy a maf from rockauto it’s 16 bucks so what’s the worst that could happen. I just unplugged mine and took it to see if it was gummed up. Plugged it back and started the car. It started fine then almost stalled it self out which it’s never done before on start up. Which makes me think it might be the maf.

Ya don't buy a rock auto maf. Rock Auto stuff is great for most things but not the maf, get an OEM.

Don't do it. Only OEM MAF sensors will work correctly. Sad, but true. Instead, clean it with MAF cleaner.

I’m gonna try and clean it. I’m gonna try and have some one tune it for the intake if it doesn’t work.

If it's a stock sized MAF housing, tuning is the last resort after all offer possible issues have been ruled out.

An inexperienced tuner will try to "tune-out" your "issue" and maybe even get it close.
An experienced tuner can recognize the inconsistencies in the MAFcal and will tell you there's an issue that needs to be fixed.

So I went through it all and I think it’s in need of a tune for the stupid intake. Some guy has a hypertech tuner I said hell sell me for 60. He had it on his speed3. Any one ever heard of that tuner. And is it any good

There's at least 1 member on here that uses a hypertech and loves it. Suits his needs, but it's not for everyone.

I literally went through the whole car this morning so the only thing I can think is that it needs a tune for the bov and intake. I can’t think of anything else it could be.

But, you must have the stock K04 or identical flow (BNR Stage 1, for example), must have stock intake MAF tube size, and, if using an aftermarket intake that requires an air straightener just before the MAF, that straightener must be in place.

It is picky on the intake choices because it sets its MAF cal on the known flow of specific intakes it has tested. Those intakes are listed in its configuration setup menu. Get that wrong and it does not perform properly and may throw a code for lean at idle condition. That's classic for improper MAF cal.

It is very compatible with most exhaust side mods, including 3" catless dp/rp, provided you upgrade the hpfp internals.

So, if you are on the stock K04, pump gas, and have a compatible intake, its a good choice. That POS cobbled together home brew intake on OP's car will not work.

BTW, bypass valve or blow off valve has nothing to do with this discussion. As long a the stock valve is functioning properly, it is altogether suitable, as are most common aftermsrket valves with just about any tune for the K04. If OP's valve is not leaking and is running in recirc mode, it should be left alone.

I've posted many logs and VD charts here in multiple threads about my results with Hypertech. With my mods I am seeing a safe and reliable 300 whp and 300 ft. lbs. torque on pump 93 octane. I don't think you can do much better with any other safe tune for the stock K04 and pump gas.

You cannot use it on other turbos, larger MAF housings, or with ethanol or blends. If you run 3" downpipe with it you must upgrade pump internals.

Not for that intake. I'm not sure any tune would be safe with it. Sorry

Any reputable intake from a major company (many threads here on choices) either SRI or CAI style, as long as your maf housing is OEM diameter, will do.

At minimum Id get an oem bypass valve setup back in there.

Hit me up, think I still have my oem valve in the garage. Youll have to source a proper bypass hose though.

I think it is about $10 at the dealer.

Given that boost is going to be under 20 psi, you could probably just make one from bulk gasket material at any auto parts store. Trace the pattern, the center hole and the two mounting bolt holes, and cut out. It's not like it's 200 psi. Should hold fine.

You could put a very light coat of gasket sealer (Permatex comes to mind) on both sides, just in case, but not really necessary.

Don't over torque the mounting bolts. They strip out easily and some ham-fisted guys have broken them off in the manifold.
