mother fucking manifold install Ok so I finished the manifold install lol, finally.. Took about 17 hours by myself, with a mediocre selection of tools, in my garage. All was done on top, I only used the jack to slap bolts out of the plastic tray when they would fall down. The biggest PITA was those 4 fucking turbo studs. Sears was real helpful and didn't charge. I had to get some new head studs from Pep Boys cause for some reason I would drop them and they wouldn't make it to the ground. Fuck it. PB Blaster is your friend, so are ratchet wrenches, and flex socket wrench. Only thing now is I need a new turbo coupler, and some heat wrap cause its fucking up my fmic piping. Results: Maybe I am on crack but with full catless CS exhaust, this thing didn't really change the sound. It noticeably pulls harder in the upper RPM's like 4500-6500 Heres some pics etc cause they are fun to look at Finished http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l2...t/DSC05801.jpg The Work Station http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l2...t/DSC05802.jpg My Mechanic's Chest http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l2...t/DSC05803.jpg Satan's Stool Sample http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l2...t/DSC05804.jpg The Aftermath http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l2...t/DSC05805.jpg |
lawl. shouldn't have attempted it by yourself. i tried to tell you, that shit sucks man. |
hahha your at the point where your second guessing your righty tighty lefty loosey shit... keep on trying.. blast that PB hard on them before you go to bed. |
i just got a 2nd one by putting the rag over the wrench for better grip... It makes that creaking noise like the wrench is gonna snap lol.. I got to creak number 2 on the third and I dont have any energy left.. I think I cracked a tooth from gritting so hard |
heat em up |

when i did my install i sprayed all bolts the day before install. sparyed again that morning then when i was about to take them off. i also did this install by myself. i used a breaker bar and shit came off pretty easy. it took a total of 8 hours but i did my dp at the same time. also most of the dp studs and 2 of the mani came out instead of the bolt coming off. |
cant wait to put mine on... |
Re: mother fucking manifold install Breaker bar got mine out easy. How do you put the studs back on though if the nuts are loose too though? |
i actually can't remember but i know in the middle of the stud there are no threads so i used something on that part to tighten it back into the turbo. |

I feel your pain... when I was doing the install on the steed manifold last time my elbow hurt for a week trying to break the same bolts you are talking about loose. Get the biggest breaker bar you can, pull until you think you're about to rip the downpipe right out of the hangars, then pull harder. |
I love it when Scatt posts about failure.... |
double nut is the only way for the turbo studs.. scatt the first time i took off the mani i was furious. pb blast it a few days before. great investment. now that you didnt do that just man up and be prepared for hurt knuckles and a lot of yelling. the next times i did mani work were a fuckin cake walk compared to the first time. |
pb blaster and a breaker bar will be your best friend as most have stated. |
Could be worse. You could be that ginger that threw his shoulder out throwing a punch lol! |
I know when David installed mine v1 he used a shoulder strap for leverage on some of the hard to get to bolts if that helps... He got my stock mani off in like an hour. |
gotta love new cars, all my studs came out with ease |
yo r u doing this shit with the mani like burning hot? you should have 3rd and 4th deg burns when your done. heat that shit back up and everything comes off easy |
Try cracking the thread interface by tightening the nuts a touch first...they'll likely wind right off after that. That's OTR truck turbo rebuild advice. |
so after bruising 2 knuckles and mangling my hand, I said fuck it and too kit to sears. It took me and the mechanic 4 tries with his fucking 2 and a half foot breaker bar to get those last two to break. He didn't charge me anything. Letting the car cool down right now so I can finish this POS. |
its been ...id say 3 weeks since my manifold install and my burns are still pealing and my scabbed knuckels still have scabs |

ok I got 8/10 head studs off .... those last bottom two by the turbo, how do you get these off ? I was told this entire install could be done from the top, someone was fibbing. |
you need a wracheting wrench for all of them. i can do this mani in 45 mins tops. but i also have an ms6 lol |
start powerlifting like lenny. might get the strength to take everything off. good luck man. |
lol got all the headstuds off... now i cant get the fucking manifold to come off.. |
hit it with a mallet |
when scatt has a prybar in his hand, his car throws a cel: p08787- danger to oil pan. |
get some heat on it. start up the car and idle for a few secs. |
dont listen to him, you will burn ur hand |
damn scatt sounds like a fun time. have fun getting that thing running. |

beat that motherfucker with the breaker bar |
ok I got everything installed finally. 16 total hours of hand shredding. I installed the nut above the alternator not knowing it wasnt used while also losing a nut, so tomorrow I will fix that... It sounds like I have an exhaust leak cause when I start to go WOT it sounds like their is popcorn under my hood, or pop-rocks in someones mouth. Im hoping that is from the missing nut not being on there. Everything was done from the top. I noticed no change in sound lol, you queers. Idle is the same. |
you love me dont you. |
damm it took David only a few hours start to finish and he had to drop the motor to get it in lol (most likely cause it was v1 mani), no headeheacks. He did tell me the "shoulder strap" trick was one of the tricks of the trade. |
I did everything from the top lol. One of those nuts took about an hour to get off by itself, I could only move it like 1/10 of a thread every turn |
