Default My speed is at the dealer...

So when I got to work yesterday I heard a pretty loud noise coming from the back of the engine. popped the hood and tried to pinpoint it. seemed like it was coming from the pulley or turbo. took it to the dealer this morning, hoping it was the turbo because i'm under warranty still, and they called saying it was the tensioner. Also told me I should NOT be using synthetic oil (2009 speed 3). I'm gathering my info to call bull shit on the oil thing, is there anything else I should be calling them out on? car has 33,000 miles and the pulley needs to be replaced already? come on... thanks for your replies ahead of time.

Dealer is a bunch of idiots if they are telling you not to use synthetic oil, pretty sure it even says in the owners manual to use it.

No synthetic? I beg to differ. I mean conventional would be ok, but you def. would have to change it at earlier intervals than synthetic. But thats just a headache...Stick with synthetic man

I run synthetic and still change it every 5k, with how prone to fuel blowing by the rings these motors are, i would much rather change the oil often and not have to worry about fuel sheer than push my luck.

sorry i cant help with the tensioner thing

i've been running 10w30 synthetic for over 2 years with no issues. i think they are worried about the thinner synthetic causing the turbo to smoke sooner....

Smh, pull out your manual and show them where it tells you to use synthetic.

Find a different dealership. These people aren't worth your time or business. I just got finished dealing with a dealership trying to get my smoking turbo fixed after 3 weeks. I took it to another dealership and I had my car back the next day with a new VVT actuator and valve cover smoking turbo fix. Don't waste your time on shady stealerships.

I run 5W-30 Mobil 1 and change it every 7,500 miles. Here is what Blackstone reported on my latest UOA:

Your Speed3 has crossed the 100,000-mile point and it's still wearing like a champ. In fact, this is some of the lowest wear we've seen from your engine recently and you didn't have to shorten your oil run to get it. Sometimes we see a little fuel in the oil with this engine, but even that really hasn't been an issue. The trace amount here isn't anything harmful and is probably just from taking the sample cold or just driving
around town. The TBN was 1.9, which is getting low, but there's still some active additive here. Looking good at 107,152 miles.

Unfortunately being all the way up here in Hagerstown the only speed dealers close to me are Frederick and Gaithersburg. And where in the manual does it say to use synthetic because I looked at a downloaded PDF version yesterday and it didn't say anything specifically about not using synthetic. Just said which oil to use for the turbo and non-turbo. I wanna say I was on page 8-18

it doesn't say to use synthetic. it also doesn't say not to.

it just specifies the required properties of the oil. synthetic is better because it is more resistant to thermal breakdown and is less prone to shearing. a good synthetic in our engines also resists fuel dilution better than nonsynthetic. your dealer was just saying shit to sound knowledgeable. try to talk to a tech, especially the one working on your car. he won't likely give you the run around.

Yeah that was also what I was kinda thinking. Like when this ass hat was talking to me and said no you aren't supposed to use synthetic I'm like I can't wait to go back home and do my research so I can fucking bury you're ass when I get back.

I believe in the genpu book it says to use synthetic. But I'm not 100% sure. I have always run synthetic in my car and I change it every 4,000 miles. (Don't judge me)

Yeah me too. Especially since the dealership called just now and said that due to my excellent record keeping they were going to replace the PCV valve free of charge instead of replacing the turbo but that I was still responsible for the 500 they wanted to replace the tensioner.

I've seen in before. Ask any 2008 R32 owner.

My question is the PCB valve being replaced really going to fix the turbo or is it a temporary band aid to avoid the cost of doing the turbo

PCV doesn't matter anyways, the stealership just called and I'm getting a new turbo on top of getting the pcv valve replaced. Thanks for all the help guys.

Wait what?

So what is really wrong... Are you sure it isn't your VVT shitting the bed?

Why would they just up and replace the turbo?

So many WTFs.

But hey, free turbo!

And for the future - DIY replace belt tensioner

Lol who knows. They called this afternoon and said that the engine was apart to check for sludge and whatnot so that they could take pictures and send it off to California to approve the turbo replacement. I looked at the diy's and it probably wouldn't be too bad but for $250 a decent shop right down the street said they would do it. Plus the part it self was like $150 or so with the tensioner and the belt. But this is also assuming they were correct in diagnosing the tensioned as needing to be replaced.

Plus the sound was coming from the back of the engine right near the firewall. That's why I said turbo to begin with.

Turbo won't even be out here until Friday at the earliest so my speed has been sitting in the dealer bay with the engine torn apart. This means that at the earliest I'll have it back on Friday or this could go into next week. Good thing I have this to roll around in for the time being:

so I finally got the car back this afternoon. Still have to do the belt tensioner and it'll prolly get done tomorrow. Only question I have is did they stick a refurbished turbo in my car or was it brand new? not sure if a guy I work with was being a smart ass or not.

If it was repaired under warranty I would assume it was a new turbo.

Lol I didn't really push it that hard. Figured i'd give it a hundred mile break in or so. Plus the noise from the belt tensioner is still very noticeable.

So I got this shop down the street to replace the tensioner and I'm glad I did. They said that the tensioner bolt was bent and cross threaded like someone took it off before. The shop had to reap the hole and said that had they not been so careful I would've been getting a new engine because the piece that they retapped is forged to the block. Also noticed that the dealership I went to that I thought did a decent job of the work and keeping me in the loop fucked up somewhere along the line and there's oil leaking out of the cam timing oil control valve. Now I am on my way back so they can fix this shit and clean up all the oil. Pictures attached.
