Exploding, broken window, open trunk, mismatched wheels neon brings lulz.

Addikted To Boost 03-01-2011 07:45 AM

damn man that sucks, your car sounds just like mine. At least the camera takes some good video.

SIXual Panda 03-01-2011 07:54 AM

damn!!!! epicly rare video! i would be so proud to have that on video if that were me. good luck with whatever you decide to do. either rebuild or stock it out and go MK4.. either way.. you will have yourself a nice car.

bwspeed 03-01-2011 10:57 AM

stock intercooler?

MrBojangles 03-01-2011 11:11 AM

Yup. This car blew because it was running lean. I suspect pump failure since my last log had WOT afrs in the mid 10s and would dump carbon. In that video there is almost no smoke and then poof. Who knows though.

Erich 03-01-2011 11:41 AM

Why not pull the pump, see how smoothly (or not) it compresses and then disassemble it and check the condition of the internals. Did you hear a lot of new noise coming from the pump? When they start to fail you get more and louder tapping sounds from the cam follower not maintaining constant contact with the pump internals.

How long ago was your last log (or when you were last monitoring)?

Ummmm, afr's in mid 10's is actrully alittle rich. Higher# =leaner

Perfect WOT in this car should be around 11.3-11.9,..somewhere around there...now if you were running say 13s..that would be lean....but 10s is on the rich side.

Also when fp is failing....usually you will get some cut...meaning some hesitation in the higher rpms. did you experience any of this before you blew??

Erich 03-01-2011 01:23 PM

That was his point. He was in the 10s and dumping carbon. In this video he was getting no carbon at all so likely lean. There was other evidence like what sounded like knock in some of his earlier pulls in the video.

MrBojangles 03-01-2011 01:28 PM

right

Sorry, misread your information. Just checkin, some people dont know how afr's work, so my bad :)

Anyways back to the pump, did you experience any fuel cut at all before the WOT?? my ptp pump started cutting is this colder weather colder weather out, so no wot for me right now.

Also, there are times when I dont always dump smoke when I go wot either..like my first couple wots I will...then couple wot pulls right after wont...my car is Tim Bailey tuned with 11.7 afr's....anyways yeah your trying to figure things out, and I hope you do. Keep us posted.

Were you logging fuel pressures? If you are getting a cut with no drop in fp prior to the cut, then maybe it is load related (not sure when you had it tuned or how long the protuners have had access to the load cap.) If your fuel pressure is dropping, then you may have a pump from PTP's bad batch. Contact PTP and get it warrantied.

fjames 03-01-2011 02:10 PM

From the water vapor I'm guessing that was a cold start? You're into boost at less than a minute after a cold start in freezing weather then it looks like. Since nobody's saying anything, does that mean people think this is a normal way to drive? I wish people would figure out this is a 25K shitbox with a higher specific output from the factory than almost any other car ever legally for sale in the U.S. in the history of the universe.

I actually wondered about that the first time I watched the video as well. Would be doubly bad if there was knock in his tune as the knock sensor doesn't even come on until the coolant temp is like 140 degrees.

Yeah, according to ATR it's 158 - I set a low temp warning on my DH for "less than or equal to" 160 to remind me :)

Ziggo 03-01-2011 02:37 PM

My shit knocks like crazy on a cold start between the time the coolant reaches ~170f and the time when the oil gets hot.

Seems like all the clichés rolled into one:

Cold temperature
5th gear
Shortly after a shift
Partial throttle
PTP fuel pump

It does appear to be the case. Not sure what it is about winter driving but I rarely have the urge to floor it or get on the car. Once it's nicer out, I have no issue with wot.

MrBojangles 03-01-2011 03:48 PM

Lets rule out a couple things. I had just driven the car almost an hour home from work. I got out, went in the house, changed clothes and grabbed the camera. The car was off for MAYBE 10 minutes at most. It was fully up to operating temperature.

Everything else I think you're all right on the money with.

The car was tuned by Jorge at P&L in Chicago. I know for sure it wasn't the tune. The car leaned out at some point in the last couple weeks and finally went. I drove it like an asshole at all times so I assume something changed recently. I didn't notice any fuel cut since I upgraded my pump. I have a log around here somewhere but its a few weeks old and I assume not very helpful.

That being said, I am no tuner. That's why I got a protune, i dont trust my knowledge in that area enough.

Sniper2606 03-01-2011 04:04 PM

any pics or videos on the engine?! and btw im sorry for the lost

Haltech 03-01-2011 04:12 PM

Tune has nothing to do with the current weather in which it blew. It doesnt matter what your timing and fuel targeting was, 98% of fuel injected cars out there will ADD additional timing during cold weather to lean the car out. Most run extremely fat in cold weather.

Its sad to see that she blew, but there are several factors that may have played a roll here. If you didnt feel any cut and i dont recall hearing any cut, then i would rule out the whole pump. It would of should signs of fail before it blew and were talking days before hand.

Since nothing was logged, were not even going to know. Its all speculation. I would put my money on higher timing and a higher AFR which cause it to detonate and lose the rod.

MrBojangles 03-01-2011 04:37 PM

I had to take the video down. Someone put it on NASIOC and I dont want that much exposure because those guys are douchebags

First thing I did when I experience some hesitation from the fuel pump was grab my AP and log a WOT pull. From 5000-5800 rpm, my fuel psi dropped from 1700+ to 900 lol...yeah..shitty fp. This pt pump is one of the newer ones, I will not get it replaced by them, Im just gonna go for cp-e pump and call it a day.

Docnox 03-01-2011 05:33 PM

Aww, I never even got to see the video.

Sorry for the explosion though. I vote keep the mk3 and build the speed. Then you'll have rwd and fwd monsters. Can't beat that.

Yeah because they have soo much room to talk with "cast" pistons whose ringlands crack all the time due mostly due Subaru's stock shitty tune, or wrx's weak 5speed tranny, so they either try hardend gear sets or buy a 6 speed sti tranny, which umm isnt cheap...Love Subarus.....awesome cars, but like everyone else they got thier share of mishaps as well.

stefan 03-01-2011 05:39 PM

BOOOO for taking down the video.

set it to private and post the link in VIP. done.

Because I bought some things from the classifieds on here when I had a MS3.

And your point? I keep my douchebaggery on the track, where it belongs, unlike the OP.

Lex 03-01-2011 06:19 PM

The mature NASOIC crowd stepped in folks. The internet police is everywhere. I guess STIs are driven at posted speed limits at all times while not on the track.

I am a fan of safety - but where is the proof that OP was breaking the law? Why don't you leave the law up to the people meant to make those decisions and enforce it.

Out of all the douchebaggery you see on youtube this was mild - at least the OP wasn't racing anyone.
