Mysterious "Check Engine" light A couple weeks ago the "Check Engine" light came on. I was already having problems shifting gears before it came on. So I was like, yea I better get an oil change ASAP, and a couple days later I got it changed with synthetic oil. I figured that would've helped made shifting from 2nd to 3rd and 3rd to 4th easier, but it didn't, and the light was still on. But yesterday, I looked over and the light was gone! Either the bulb on the other side finally blew out or all it needed was new oil and a few days to get used to it. It's still kinda hard shifting gears though, thanks to my reckless driving back in July. I find that shifting is possible as long as it's under 3k RPM, but I can't downshift at all, no matter what gear it is, until I'm damn near stopped. Sometimes it feels like there's a piece of gum stuck on the underside of my clutch after shifting too. I wanna get this thing fixed soon because at this rate I'll look like the Hunchback of Notre Dame, what with my right deltoid, pectoral, and latissimus muscles getting a workout with shifting. From what I've read, the problem is in the synchros, right? |
Changing the engines oil has absolutely no effect on your transmissions shifting |
Sorry bro but your explanation makes no sense. Did you ever try to get the code read by someone? Do you have any mods? |
If you think that the bulb actually blew then you can check by turning the key and watching all the lights flash momentarily. If it doesn't flash, then it blew. +1 for transmission fluid |

Did you fill up in gas between the CeL and the oil change? Loose gas cap throws a code, and if you filled up, you may have solved that cel by tightening the cap. |
The only way we can help you is if you help us. You need to scan the code so we know what it is. Also like stated already your transmission and engine have essentially no effect on the other. Changing your engine oil didnt change any shift characteristics or check engine light status. |
Sorry for the senseless story and thinking that engine oil had anything to do with transmission...of course it doesn't! It was way overdue for an oil change though. But here's an interesting story. A couple days ago I was starting off in second gear, and I meant to shift to third but somehow by accident shifted to first, and by now I must've been over 20 mph. Yeah...so you can imagine what was going on in the RPM and in my head. I thought my transmission was gonna bite the dust right then and there, and I thought I was gonna bite the dust too because a truck that I was hoping wouldn't hit me, would probably hit me. But a heartbeat later I got it into the proper gear and fortunately, me and my car are still alive and kicking. And I no longer have trouble shifting gears at all, and I can downshift like normal again too. The only issue now is I can hear a grinding sound as I'm slowly releasing the clutch. |
what code do you have? |
welcome fail master:trink26: |
a shifting issue wouldn't just disappear on it's own unless driver adjusted or, uh, got better skills |
leaky slave cylinder? |
*SNIF, SNIF* I smellz me a trollololol :banned: |
I'm with ^^^^ If you're not then shifting back into 1st at 20 mph isn't the end of the world. Also your trans should have blocked you out so I don't know how you managed it in the first place. If your trans doesn't want to go into gear don't force it because you will break it further...also learn to drive |
