Default Need help. Strange noise on acceleration.

For the last few weeks I have noticed a weird metallic slapping/creaking noise when I start the car. Never lasted more than it took to crank the car. Today while driving I heard the noise right after a shift during acceleration coming from the upper left side of the clutch peddle but inside the actual engine bay. It continued to get worse. Called off school and limped home. I almost felt as if something was loose. Figured out that you could get the noise to reproduce loudly by turning off the car and cranking it. Had wife crank car and it sounded like the chatter noise was coming from around or under the battery (transmission mount). I also noticed that the right side of the engine seemed to shake much worse than the left. Does this seem consistent with a transmission mount failure? If not what else should I look for. Luckily my wife is going out of town on business for a week so I have a car and time to figure this out.

That could be the trans mount. Just pull the battery box and take a look. It could be the bolt coming loose, so make sure you check that. Check for tears in the rubber pieces.

Well looks like I may have found the problem....

What do you guys think?

Time for a TRZ Transmission mount?

I'm pretty sure those gaps are supposed to be there. It's been a long time since I messed with the stock piece.

This is how mine looked when it really failed:

http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h1...3/DSCN2290.jpg

http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h1...3/DSCN2289.jpg

And the bolt was bent:

http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h1...3/DSCN2285.jpg

Which ruined the threads in the mount:

Looks fine, but you have to pull it to really tell. Could be cracked underneath.

Have you pulled the rear mount? Pull that first. Take it out, check for tears. Look at passenger mount, pretty easy to see too.

Hmmm ok. Well a replacement mount is already on its way. What else could it be if it turns out to not be the mount?

I will try to describe the symptoms better.

- Thunking/bang noise.
- Coming from upper left side of driver foot well or under battery area if looking from under the hood.
- Happens immediately after a shift as transmission is engaged or when in higher rpms and punch it.
- Also happens when you crank the car to start it but more intermittent then. Sounds like something is "banging" around in the engine bay.
- Car shifts smooth.
- Clutch holds fine.
- Sound not coming from inside engine.

Any more ideas?

I have a CP-E RMM. It looks fine. It is definitely a problem on the drivers side. No mistaking it.

OK, you have a CPE RMM. Did you take it out and look at it? It can look pretty installed, but take it out, might be torn.

and do NOT tighten, toque, etc the Transmisison mount bolt. It is set to go to a set point, and if you tighten it, the thing can back out and snap. Well known back in the day of that happening. The threadlock gets broken, so nothing to keep it in. I coated my TMM bolt in red loctite when I installed the TRZ mount.

So year, take out the rmm first, check for cracks.

Ok will do. Won't have time until tomorrow but I will pull out the RMM and check it. I am not driving the car again until the RMM is checked and the new TRZ transmission mount goes in.

No I didn't I put a ratchet on it and it was tight so I didn't want to torque it down any further.

Well fuck. There is a leak on the drivers side where the axle enters the transmission housing... Could this be related to the noise? Its seems to be leaking pretty good. Any advice. I really know very little about transmissions. The RMM looked good BTW.

Ok did some research and the axle seal seems shot. Shouldn't be related to the noise.

Ok TRZ mount went in.

Sound seems to be gone. Seems is the key word. The transmission is LOUD now and vibrates. In all honesty it sounds like a milder version of a fully race prepped rx8 I drove a while ago. At certain RPMs the whine is loud. I like the noise though. Besides that the car shifts so damn smooth now. I can't imagine ever grinding 3rd again. Just smooth. Tried out some no lift shifting and there was no engine thrash just acceleration. Well worth the money. Forgot to put some loctite on the bolt so when I get a chance I will pull it back out and put some on. Great mod!

I get a clink on take off or weight transfer and am sure it must be this...now I can't decide to buy one now or wait to see what new ones come out.

I am hearing the transmission's normal noises because of the stiff mount. It sounds cool and the car shifts like butter. The original noise is gone. I am going to loctite the bolt later this afternoon. It went so perfect the first time that I am kicking myself that I have to pull that bolt back out. haha

The CPE RMM is fine. Didn't check the passenger mount as the engine lash and noise was from the left side but I suppose I should check it since I have had problems with two mounts.

I would go with the TRZ. $100 is not much money for what it does. My car was doing the same thing. Couldn't figure out where they actual noise was being produced from but once I swapped the mount no more clanking noise. It had to be something with the mount because I localized the noise to under the battery box. I did notice more engine lash on the driver's side. Most people say that a mount will look obvious when it is toast but when my RMM went bad it just had a small piece of the rubber pulling away from the mount. It was enough to cause a noticeable difference. I did notice a few tears in the TMM but who knows?

What ^ said.

I have the TRZ, and it makes the car sound like a WRC car. Buddy who is nearly fully bolted seems silent compared to mine. But I sure do love knowing the engine is not falling out and into the radiator.

The play in the trans mount probably let the motor/tranny move around too much and tore the axle seal. you need to get that looked at...you don't want to run the tranny out of fluid.

No shit. I actually started laughing because I was not expecting the sounds and level of connection with the shifter and transmission. The TMM and the RMM would be mods #1 an #2 if I did it all over again. I look forward to shifting now. Best mod I think I have ever done as far as driver enjoyment. Hopefully the noise and easy engagement stay after it is broke in.

I have the new seal. Fuck letting any mechanic or dealer do it for me for $300 on a $10 part. Gonna go on next weekend but I need to find the tool to install the seal. What is it? The dealer said that I could use a very large socket to push it in. Dunno about that. Don't really have 40mm socket that's used on oil rigs laying around. Any advice would be appreciated!

I have read for the last 5 years, it is a 1 use bolt. But many have reused no problem. Coat the bitch in red loctite. I coated every inch of thread to the point it was dripping, and I also put some on the threading before putting it in. I did not want it to back out.

9YA021437A is the part # if you want to get a new one from onlinemazdaparts.com

If it snapped ,the motor is resting on the radiator and axles are popping off.

The new mount is amazing and it fixed my engine flapping around! Shifts and driving in general feel so much better. The car sounds awesome, and my butt dyno readings are off the charts!!

My clicking on weight transfer however, is not fixed which points me to the axles I guess? The sound is more audible now.

So far I give this TRZ mount 5 stars though.

Install was straightforward, but I filled it with fail. All the bolts on the tripod were a bitch to get off, but we used a headless lacrosse stick for leverage on the wrench. I also made the stupid mistake of installing the trz without the tripod first...so cleaning the red loctite off the bolt that was already setting was a pain in the ass. And it was a bitch getting it in the second time, almost thought we stripped the threads. The funny part was this piece fell out on the road at 80mph on the test drive, I thought I hit a squirell something. WTF is it? haha. I turned around and found it in the middle of the road. Also here is a pic of my yummy oem mount.

Oh yeah, mystery weight thing. I goes onto the back of the mount. Keeps the car from time travel. Watch out for 88 mph. And Parkinson's.

Ok did some research and the axle seal seems shot. Shouldn't be related to the noise.
Check your shift pivot shaft for leak..there is a seal there that when went bad will caused trans.fluid to leak. When Trans housing fluid lows caused trans. to make noise. Check your PMM for any fluid leaks underneath/
