Is your Cobb SRI still bracketed to your Box or is it flopping around with the bracket removed? or flopping with the bracket still there. Maybe its hitting something? anything else possibly banging around?

I've looked around several times. The SRI is still mounted firmly on the bracket which is firmly mounted near the battery box.

The thing about it is the fact that it climbs with engine speed. Also, it seems like something would have to vibrate incredibly fast to be picked up as knock. Surely it couldn't just be something flopping around in the engine bay. Has anyone ever actually found something loose under the hood that was being picked up as knock? Seems unlikely to me but I guess anything is possible.

It sounds crazy, but ckmazdaspeed3 mentioned in another thread that Jwilkins' dipstick was his source of false KR.

This might be a long shot, but, have you thought about checking the valve clearance? If the KR climbs with engine speed and you cannot really hear anything (I would think an event of 5* would be audible) it might be in the valve train... Just a thought

How would one go about checking this?

Is this something that would only occur about half the time but with the same consistency when it does occur?

What is strange now is I've turned my KR sensor off @ 6100 RPM but now I'm getting random bouts of KR in the 1.5-2.1 range between 5000-5500 rpm.

It's like its just fucking with me at this point. Taunting me. The KR doesn't happen all the time, just sometimes. I never used to get KR in this range previously.

I wonder if something is either coming lose or the issue is getting worse with time.

I should really stop doing like 5-6 logs a day. Getting on the car this much can't be good for it...

Maybe I'm not looking hard enough.

If some of you guys were having this problem. How would you go about checking your engine bay for things that are rattling? What am I REALLY looking for? There are wire harnesses, etc all over the place....

If you have the engine rebuild manual it goes over how to check the clearences.

Pulled the TMIC and did some looking around... I checked the motor mounts I could get to, I checked anything and everything I thought could be rattling around. Didn't find anything.

Did some logs this morning on the way to work. Both of them are 4th-5th Gear logs.

The afternoon logs are all 3rd-4th gear logs.

Just strange how I won't see KR, then I'll see a little bit, then I'll see more.

Intake/BATs were pretty much the same between the pulls. Not enough to have a real effect I wouldn't think.

To me, temperature is the first thing I think of when I see KR start to show up after doing consecutive logs. Anyone think it's something else?

Please take a look and let me know what y'all think. My LTFTs are a bit off for some reason @ +4%. I'm also overboosting a little bit.

I'm installing a catted downpipe next weekend so I'm not reallllly worried about dialing the boost in much before I do a big change like that.

At last!!!!!!!!!!!!

It appears my KR is GONE! I spent some time yesterday under the hood. Pulled the TMIC off, stretched all the coil springs, tightened everything I could find (nothing seemed loose though..), switched my map over to 91 Oct Ign tables, and removed the ECU cover and battery box cover, both of which were missing a clip so they were all loose and whatnot.

Granted, I did a lot of things at once but from this morning and this afternoon's logs, it appears my KR is finally gone.

I'd gone to 91 Oct map before and it didn't change anything so I think I can rule that out. I'm using the same gas as I have been the last month (except when i thought I was getting bad gas), so that isn't it.

I'm not sure if the ECU box and battery cover being lose could actually show up as KR or not...but who knows.

Datalogs are uploaded to Dano's Boost Tuning Thread...

Thanks everyone for all your help. Much appreciated.

My next move is to swap out the knock sensor with another one. I'll have one on Friday in case the car just happens to revert back to it's crappy KR happy self...

Yeah, been pretty much the most frustrating thing I've ever dealt with concerning a vehicle before.

I'm sure everyone subscribed to this thread and around this forum is like, "Thank GOD! The dumb fuck will finally quit blabbing on about his fucking KR problems..."

Well, let's all hope this dumb fuck is done with it for awhile...

Yeah...except that I have no idea what actually fixed the KR problem.

1. Stretched coil springs
2. Installed 91 Oct Ign Tables (had done this before with no avail)
3. Tighten every nut that was visible (none appears loose though)
4. Removed loose ECU cover and Battery Box cover (could be the culprit but it's pretty far away from the block)

Take your pick!

Shit. I'm going to bask in this glory for a little while. I'm already targeting 18 PSI tapered to 16.5 @ only Stage 1.

I'm going stage 2 next weekend with a CNT catted downpipe.

Then I'll jump back into the tuning mess...

On a side note, I think I am skeptical of Costco 93 gas. On one hand, they only offer 89 or 93, no 91. They also do A LOT of business so the gas is always "fresh". However, I wonder how much of a difference there can actually be from one brand of 93 to the next....excluding little Ma and Pa gas stations...

FWIW, an e-tuner in the evo world turned me onto bp gas.

I used to use shell, and will never use it again.

Any updates on this? Did the KR come back?
I'm having similar issues, have done everything except coil stretch and safe seals.

Well, the KR hasn't been a problem for awhile. Not sure what actually fixed the issue. I haven't really been able to test it much since I put on the new catted downpipe since now I can't go over about 60% throttle due to my fuel pump crapping out on me. Just waiting for KMD to e-mail me and tell me they have internals in stock again.

Try the coil spring stretching. Poor contact in the coil can EASILY cause small misfires or timing issues bad sparks etc. My guess would be this is original problem. DO IT and let us know. Always need MOAR info.

Well, I thought I had the KR taken care of. Turns out I don't. I installed a downpipe and the new KMD internals along with the ITV-22's, cp-e Safe Seals, etc and I'm still showing KR when I get over 6000 RPM.

I am of the thinking that either my knock sensor just isn't very reliable above 6000 RPM or that my motor just makes "noise" above that range. I never hear any audible knock and it happens about half of the time I log.

My solution so far is just to ignore it. I turn off the knock sensor at 6000 RPM now and typically, I just shift around 6100 anyway.

I figure, if it was real knock, dumping 3 gallons of E85 into my tank would have taken care of it. It's either hardware, which I can't figure out, or it's just noise. Either way, I feel much better just not even seeing it. If I can't feel/hear knock that is causing up to 6.0 degrees of KR then i have no business driving this car.

When you have the chance, the accuracy of the knock sensor is being discussed here:
